The fun must come from something in the design besides the simulation layer. The fun in Sims came from comedy. Every few minutes your sim would fuck something up and go "whoop da beep de bumba!" or some shit while its kitchen is on fire. It made playing the game like watching a funky sitcom. But that brand of comedy works once or twice and needs to be designed around. Meanwhile the long term fans of the Sims are turbo autist women who use it as a dollhouse. That requires a whole other design philosophy and the Sims brand struggled to accommodate it together with the original design. You can't go midway and have both a funny sitcom and a serious life sim. You get neither. This is why games like Paralives or Inzoi are funny to see. They go for the sim layer not realizing it's inherently boring and a compromise that doesn't work too well. Women might want their dollhouse features, but they also need drama and entertainment that their design doesn't seem to consider. You get to make the dolls/Sims have the relationships you want and lives you want, but that gets boring. Sims 1 and 2 are still better because the comedy layer is more pronounced. Sims 1 especially. Dollhouse women buy the newer simulation-focused games, but the games themselves don't have the mass appeal to justify their dev costs. They're boring to average people.

I love the Sims 2, and still play it for how much detail it has, and how the dollhouses are more fun in there, but Sims 3 I play when I want to like do a bunch of lineages, and go like 7 generations deep, sims 4 is literally ass, and thus far it looks like Paralives is chasing after the sims 4 with it's Build Mode First, and Create A Char first mindest, instead of doing something like Working on the simulation first, and then adding a more detailed create a char or buildmode over time.Right now Paralives is literally the Sims 4 like it was at launch, No gameplay, but good Character creator, and improved build mode, with the promise of getting better gamemplay in the future, and I honestly don't fucking believe Paralives is ever going to get the simulation done well, and instead if going to just tunnel into the whole Stardew Valley, single generation gameplay as that seems to be the most glazed thing by the fanbase thus far.
