guys, maybe this is a dumb question but, what's the difference between a zelda like and a metroidvania?

No such thing as a zelda like, I mean literally, no fucking game ever has been able to recreate a zelda experience and I just dont understand why.
I am still waiting for a more "adult" version of a zelda experience.

Though in some ways the typical traditional zelda dungeon is a kind of mimic of metroidvania gameplay as you need to get an upgrade in the dungeon that allows you more access and often includes back tracking in some sort of why. Mainly to a kind of central hub area.

It's mostly vibes based but in general:
Metroidvania tends to be side-scrolling while Zelda-likes tend to be top down.
Zelda style games typically have a distinction between "overworld" and "dungeon" areas while Metroid feels more like one big dungeon.

Mina's devs said their game is more like a zelda and not a metroidvania.

Metroidvanias require you to backtrack.

Zelda-likes require you to search the open world.

Metroid games put the upgrades behind the boss fights, Zelda games put the upgrades before the boss fights. also what this >>739677063 anon said.

>Mina's devs
? What is minas?

A few indie devs have tried to create zelda games, oceanhorn, tunic off the top of my head, but they all fail.
They all miss the point of the heroes journey which is at the core of the zelda experience, then they also fuck the gameplay up.
Making tight dungeons requires skill and thought out planning, let alone metroidvania like gatekept content in the open world.
Remember zelda games are puzzle games They require intellect and skill to make (and play)

Metroidvanias tend to go isolatonaist with no or very few towns.
Medtroidvanias are mostly Zelda but sidescroller and no polish.

Indie tier pixel shit.
What i meant was more in the likes of a 3d zelda but even 2d ones, no dev has been able to capture the experience.

Metroidvania
>entire world is a dungeon
Zelda-like
>clear divide in overworld and dungeon areas

3D Zelda is inferior Zelda

And Metroid hides the ammo upgrades all over the map. Zelda locks its ammo upgrades behind sidequests, minigames or Great Fairy fountains.
>>

Items in Metroid are upgrades for your equipment. Items in Zelda are complements for your equipment. In Metroid you become stronger while in Zelda you stay the same, unless it's a master sword upgrade
>>

Zelda has more concentrated density in key areas, it's what lets it have large dungeons centered around central mechanisms.
Take as an example Breath of the Wild and Shadow of the Colossus, which are a Metroidvania and a Zelda game respectively.
>>
>>739676746
One has a bigger focus on getting lost and the other has a bigger focus on solving puzzles. Both use your brain though so they're not too distant.

Breath of the Wild is absolutely not a Metroidvania, open world games in general are pretty much the antithesis of the genre
