Battles are simplistic, the only prep moves you use are buffs & debuffs, there is no switching in/out, no weather mechanics
Most abilities are just stat increases, with the exception of some that enable multi-attacks
Monsters are disposable once you fuse into stronger ones

The gameplay itself basically amounts to walking through fields grinding your monsters until you get to a boss that you have to beat to get to the next field to grind for better monsters.

All the while the Hero and his guys are out there looking to kick your ass (over a misunderstanding mind you) and it's made crystal clear that he would absolutely destroy you if her ever got a hold of you. (The bad ending is basically just the ending of IV, where you Evolve yourself into the Final Boss because your hot elf GF died and the Hero just kicks your ass)

The game is downright offensive if you're a fan of IV.

I hope they revert to the old size system (S, L, XL and XXL) because although Dark Prince allowed for more freedom with team comps (only S and L and any monster can be either of them), the sense of scale and spectacle you'd experience in the older games is completely gone.

I mean the way the new games work is that you can use literally any monster with enough fusion because stat caps are decoupled from rank (plenty of low rank monsters have higher stat caps than rank X's). So really all you're selecting for is stat growth (of which higher ranks generally do better), innate talents (which can be passed on freely) and trait combinations.

But even trait combinations are a monster-by-monster thing instead of being broadly dictated by rank. This motherfucker, a Rank E monster was one of the most infamous ones in Dark Prince's already ludicrously unbalanced and short-lived online scene because it had a comically minmaxed combination of traits.
