Spells are shared, status effects and buff/debuff matter for BOTH of you unlike many games where they're just there for flavor. It's also fun to spec your characters with certain functionality or strategy in mind and then explore how to execute it in different battles.

I actually think Toriyama is an underrated character designer, all the XI designs impressed me. He's good at making designs that are both simple, readable, and feel "fantasy", which is pretty hard to do. I think he really shines most in his monster designs though.
