Diminishing Returns
The jump from PS1 to PS2 was absolutely massive. Compare that to PS4 and PS5, and it’s practically insignificant

Nowadays the only way a game can look nextgen is either by spending millions on graphics (RDR2, Alan wake, CP2077) )or by specializing in one particular area (landscapes in KCD, character models in Death stranding)

Uncharted 4 isn't that linear, the story progress is linear but the levels range from linear scripted set pieces to large open locations with multiple routes through them, and as far as budget goes, probably not, 007 First Light's budget is larger than the previous 3 Hitman games combined, it's most likely in the 100 mil range just for development, I don't think Uncharted 4 got to that point, it took less time to make too.

Quite the opposite. EA is just playing to the meta strategy and they absolutely *are* reinvesting. The latest expansion pack for Sims 4 came out in February of this year and that's a very simple analysis of cost-benefit. Sims 4 is currently hovering at around 20,000 players on Steam charts and that's not accounting for non-Steam players. They're quite happy to keep playing Sims 4 so why make a new game when an expansion pack is 10% of the effort but 80% of the profit?

That's the meta in gaming now. Keep your game alive, keep the player base alive and make your money through DLC and this has been the meta for over a decade. It's why we have so many companies making massive flops in an attempt to create the hit new live service slop which still fails to beat Fortnite or Destiny 2 or GTA Online or whatever it is that normies have been playing for half of their lifetimes. That is reinvestment even if you don't like the product and it's not as big of a risk as making a new game.

I still think that Medieval 2 is way better than Total Warhammer and is objectively much better made in many ways but those things don't matter to the market otherwise we'd still have artisanal carpet weavers.
