CSFloat is a third party CS trade market site, i.e. an obvious phishing site. >>739714745This seems like a good opportunity to remind all Anons here that Social Engineering is the absolute EASIEST way to get information out of you and get you to do things you wouldn't normally do.By creating a sense of urgency, or using your doubt or goodwill against you, scammers don't need to use a password at all to get into your account if (You) are the one that gives them what they want willingly. An important thing to do when someone is trying to get you to say or do something is to ask questions.>Who is this person?>What do they want?>Why do they want it?>Why are they trying so hard to get it?Once you start asking these questions, scammers tend to fall apart and rely more on urgency and getting you to do things now. Once you figure out who they are and what they want, best thing to do is cut off contact and report them.Keep yourself safe and don't let scammers convince you you owe them something. This has been your public service announcement.

>>739726397Most scams work by playing both the bad guy and good guy at the same time.No government agency or major brand is going to contact you and let you clear your name before they take official action against you. You'll get notified that the consequences are coming, because most of the process happened before you knew it. Then you'll get the chance to appeal it. They don't give anyone the benefit of the doubt. It's too resource intensive to do that for everyone who gets accused of breaking the rules. But scammers? They want to ride on the false intuition that Google or Steam or the Government will try to square things up with you, and resolve the issue before they escalate. Like a reasonable individual would. Maybe that's paying an alleged outstanding tax bill from "the IRS" in the form of prepaid Visa gift cards for some reason, even though that's the most convoluted way of transmitting money, and 3%+ of your money goes to Visa and the retailer you bought the cards from. Maybe it's being traded all of your Steam items all at once even though Valve can just pull up your Steam inventory and see every account you've ever traded with without you even knowing. Both exploit the suspension (and often the complete absence) of common sense. There's just enough theater to seem legitimate, and any doubts you may have are suppressed by the combination of serious threats and the promise of a relatively easy way to avoid those consequences. In this case, the guy got a little popup in his Steam client, and most of his tabs on Steam were overridden with a warning. Most people's instinct is "Oh shit, that's something only Valve could do!" They're primed to think it's real. That's the theater. Then he gets told "We're going to nuke your account and hundreds of dollars worth of items." That's the serious threat. "But you can avoid that if you just let us take a look at everything." That's the easy out.

Took a bit to parse all this and work out what happened. It looks like some kind of hybrid scam. Sucker buying premium skins gets a fake message from an admin copycat about "You have been banned", which is really a spear phishing attempt, nearly certainly a confederate of the seller. They may have actually been legit banned by an: account hijack into spam; community bannu. Because the Steam Client is a browser, and there are all kinds of BS exploits that come with that, they fall right into the trap. The fake admin asks them to "lock" thier items, which is really going to give them away to the scammer. Serious computer users have been sounding alarm bells over this kind of shit since about IE4 days. When everything is a browser, users learn to trust what they see, you should expect security to fall straight the fuck apart. Theres not been a single week gone by since 2004 where nobody has found a new vulnerability in the web. t. retired IT workeralso, because they did this after the formal sale/trade of a discrete item with an assignable monetary value, whoever did this just committed enough serious felonies to go to jail for life, even if everything they took was worth only a fraction of a cent. Its rules of escheat, same criminal class as title fraud or grand theft.
