DQI is harder because its only the MC ("if he dies, he dies" -some boxer) and they added you fighting multiple monsters at once. DQII is probably the most balanced in terms of difficulty since you have 3-4 party members most of the time so help balance out the bullshit. I don't think his design is amazing. But I don't play the games for how the hero looks. The hero looks kind of dumb in some of the other games. It's all about the exploration, world building, item collection and the girls.
