2x2's twist will be that all of the characters are copies of the student's brainscans that can never leave the simulation. Nagito comes out as trans and then kills himself offscreen, and ends up reduced to a braindead animal. The survivors keep him leashed up like a pet dog and dump the bodies of everybody else who died in an aquarium. The end credits is a montage of them (including Monokuma who's a good guy now) having fun together.

Nagito offered to be an accomplice to help someone commit a murder several times, but no one ever took him up on it in the original 2. So I could imagine one of the dumber characters asking him for help so that someone like Ibuki or Akane pulling off some complicated murder plan doesn't look like an complete ass-pull.

Monokuma would give Nagito the credit for triggering the machine in the first place, and the trial could basically just be about people knowing HOW Soda died but needing to figure out who is lying about their alibi. It's not a complex trial but the 1st ones aren't.

If you're hyped for danganronpa 2x2 you better have already played Hundred Line Last Defense Academy. Genuinely it's better than any danganronpa game, better than all 3 combined really, and I say that as someone that only bought it because "maybe it'll have some of the essence of danganronpa". The cast is fantastic once you get past some of them being kinda ugly in their street clothes, the plotlines are fun with excellent variety, the gameplay is good and adds to the overall experience, and since launch the QoL from patches has fixed the issues I had with the game initially. The writing is basically like a lot of the best from Danganronpa, you know how it goes, the characters tend to be tropey, but the comedy lands very well and it manages to pull off the drama and twists and death scene weight very well too. This kind of gets into a spoiler a bit but most people heard it already because it's a premise spoiler, but: You might think with so many routes that you won't feel much when a character dies, but I don't think I've ever felt as big of a gut punch in a game as when I started an early part of a route branch and my favorite girl died, and I knew instantly I was in for like 20 hours of content without her in it now. When I finally got to see her again after getting out of that branch, it was an amazing feeling that you just can't get with danganronpa, to the point where I'm fully convinced the pitch for danganronpa 2x2 was "multiple timelines worked so well for HL, we gotta try it for Danganronpa now".

There's only really like 22ish full routes with a lot of those 100 endings being bad ends or alternate endings for routes, but really that's still a fuckload of content. The way they make it work so well is just by having different routes focus on different stuff. There's a romance route, a bunch of routes dedicated to fleshing out a character outside of the main group, even a killing game route even if it's certainly not Danganronpa. There's like a total of four routes I'd consider "bad" and 1 of them got fixed by QoL making repeated battles much more consistently skippable. The game has an absolutely insane number of CGs that essentially never repeat, and some routes feel worth having just to get CGs from them. The cast is phenomenal, even the characters that in Danganronpa would just be one note jokes like Teruteru end up being beloved eventually because with so many routes they all get moments to shine and become more than their tropes. Some routes are worse than others but every route has good content in it, even the worst route (Comedy), because the journey is more important than the destination and the core plot of the game was very good in my opinion.

It's already an unbelievably massive game but your issues with it were Romance Route not being super long, and there not being a School Mode? Romance route has romance elements and uses dates as a core scene setting, but the core if it is really just delving into the backstory and human feelings of those girls, and it does a fantastic job at that imo. I didn't look shit up with guides so I didn't know what the routes were called, and I genuinely loved that route for making me appreciate all 3 of the focus girls even more when they were already some of my favorites.
