I remember the times when Indies managed to make this and this was considered ok (at best).
wtf is happening to gaming nowadays?
>>
What? The Shadowrun games were good. The studio got gutted though. Indy is very strange in that it accounts for industry vets spinning off, nepo baby pet projects, grass root studios, and the sloppest of premade asset bashers. You can easily grab 1000 Indy games at a time and be lead to think it's the wave of the future or completely garbage depending on what you're exposed to.
>>
I liked Dragonfall a LOT at the time, it was one of my favorite games, I tried playing HK and just dropped it at some point, then years later I tried HK again and it seemed like a relic from another era, but not in a good way and I couldn't play it for too long, I didn't even touch Returns.
I'd say it was a good effort for waht they were, but the games were held back by being made for mobile systems.
>>

I love both Dragonfall and HK.
HK feels like an aerie dream, especially with plot progression.

I don't understand why Shadownrun isn't more popular.
You have robots, elves, guns, magic, dragon president (RIP?), virtual reality, a dystopia, AI, cyborgs, ghouls, cyberzombies, vampires (I think) and whatever else, but it never seems to grab the general public's attention.

they wanted to do a different IP than Shadowrun and accidentally exposed they were only good at Shadowrun. the battletech game killed the studio

It used to be fairly popular, but it kind lost steam, I'm not sure what exactly were the causes, maybe scifi stuff in general and cyberpunk specially losing the public interest, but one thing is that the setting has become substantially less interesting as they advanced the plot, i.e corpos cleared up Chicago and elves stopped being racist.
It has lost its edge.

Ironically it really did lose the edge system in 6th ed. It's an optional rule now because the designers had no idea how to balance it.
Then again 6th is also the edition where you can mod a gun into negative damage to heal people

>>
>>739816187
>I'm not sure what exactly were the causes
Microsoft putting the license outside of the tabletop game in gay baby jail, and literal Mormon embezzlement in Catalyst Game Labs resulting in the then-people working on Shadowrun not getting paid so noone professional wants to work with them anymore, so standards slipped because retard freelancers desperate for a paycheck started doing the lion's share of the work.

So 4 to 5 brought back the weighted system so no more point buy. Simplified skills and math. Basically reigns in character builds and cuts skill bloat. I fucking love point buy so I didn't like it but it played fine
5 to 6 is just garbage. More simplified, worse math. Fighting takes forever and PC mortality is way down. It sucks.

>Battletech with mods was their best game.
FTFY.
Base Battletech was kinda ass.
>>
>>739817081
Yeah. SR4 to 5 is a sidegrade hampered by shitty editing (because once again, CGL can't hire professionals) but SR5 to 6 is a retardgrade. Completely different game that's borderline unplayable. And that's before I delve into some of the people who worked on this. They unironically had someone working on Shadowrun who openly admitted never playing Shadowrun before and didn't understand it.
>>
>>739813282
They are definitely not good.
>>739816004
No, they are shit but were considered good because standards were extremely low back then, as they are now.

Compare them to widely considered mediocre games like Fallout: Tactics. Tactics is so far superior it isn't even funny. Yet it was considered extremely mid when it came out.

The shadowrun games are basically phone games, they're so shallow and simplistic. Actually, isn't XCOM on phones? And shadowrun makes XCOM look like a fucking once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece. So even by phone game standards, these are incredibly unimpressive games.
>>
>years later decided to nerf kneecapping with shotguns

>>
>>739817247
>never playing Shadowrun before
That's fine. Not everyone has a gaming group, but you can get feedback from fans and get up to date.
>didn't understand it.
That's not fine. How can you not understand the game by simply reading the rulebook? If you lack the ability to comprehend how things work you shouldn't be altering anything.
>>
>>739817091
Paradox bought them in 2018, after Honk Kong. And they only made shitty games.
>>
>still no RIFTs trpg
>>
>>739817210
Considering how many idiots voluntarily sided with Vauclair in Dragonfall and doomed everyone, I can only imagine most people would cry when they get bad ended and infested with an Insect Spirit if they actually had a game based in the Chicago Exclusion Zone.
>>
>>739817504
It wasn't just reading the rulebook, there are plenty of people who work on Shadowrun from the lore side who never touch the RPG. The problem was that this fucktard didn't touch EITHER side and was hired by them, proceeded to leak in production books like a sieve, and STILL wasn't fired. CGL dumpstered a game that used to be a comfortable 3rd-5th place amongst all RPGs ever until the late 2000s.

>>
>>739817247
It's crazy how bad CGLs editing team was. Time of war, Shadowrun, even their reprints where they're "fixed" rules are all over the god damn place and important mechanics are buried in fluff blurbs and vice versa. Or the dreaded "explained" one one page only to bring it back up twenty pages later
It never fails to make me laugh.

The Genesis one was awesome. It's still fun to this day in fact and something I plan on playing again soon. The SNES one had a cool story but the gameplay was dire. I liked the online multiplayer FPS game but it's dead now.

Never played the tabletop, but if I found about it sooner I probably would've loved it. The mix of cyberpunk science fantasy is pretty rad.

normally I'd think "cool, sick concept" because I'm into biopunk a lot, but we live in the gay and retarded timeline

Dragonfall was the only game of the trilogy that I actually enjoyed. The moment-to-moment gameplay was pretty weak across all three games and more than a little janky at times, but Dragonfall's plot and characters were hands-down the best of the three. I've tried to play Hong Kong multiple times and I lose interest very quickly every time, it's a bit of a shame.
I once was at a wedding reception dinner and Jordan Weisman was there. It was a little surreal.

Dragonfall was so good.
Hong kong had too much text, i often ended up skipping most of it.
Thinking of replaying the trilogy with the same character build, i might make a melee build (with the obvious 6 charisma for checks) but i have no idea what to also use with it. Adept? Cyberware samurai?
I wonder if a melee rigger is possible.
>>
Returns was such a shallow first game. it was basically designed for Samurai. Returns didn't even have rigging, or decking, from what i member
>>
>>739820465
Last time I played I went with a mage-adept. But honestly ended up mostly being a pure mage.

Most fun playthrough was honestly was as an elf assassin with some self-buffing spells and high Cha for speech checks.
I liked playing around with all the weapons in the game and playing as a weapon specialist in general.
