Game got an update recently so I'm gonna start a thread about my adventures in Exanima. Me and my boy Derrin are currently on the 2nd floor and making our way around.

What exciting adventures await us as we lurk around these filthy fucking hallways? Stay tuned to find out!
>>
Is it fun?
>>
>>739822073
I'm gonna wait another 20 years or so for it to be finished before trying it out again
>>
>>739822440
It is, but its also very different.

yeah, this game is pretty based

One of the many seemingly meaningless tapestries you see around the dungeon. Derrin doesn't seem to think much of it either.

Good thread. I'll check this game out

I feel like every screenshot of this game looks exactly the same. I guess it's all just RNG dungeons with the same tiles/palette. Is the gameplay engaging? Is it fun? I kinda think I'd rather play something like Avernum if I'm in the mood for some unc-core RPGing.

how does this compare to spark in the dark?
>>
>>739829124
core aspect of exanima is how everything is physics-based, my 15 seconds looking up that game leads me to believe it isn't.
>>
>>739822073
isn't this game 10 over years old now? Is it still in early development?
>>
>>739827490
I can’t believe I let that happen. The last time I died was because I fell down the chasm while trying to use wooden planks to walk across it. This time I just ran straight into the fucking hole kek

Oddly enough I don’t feel as enraged by this death as I did last time, so I’m still gonna keep playing for a bit.
>>
>>739830317
I wouldn't say early, but considering most of the skills and stuff aren't there yet maybe it is in early development still. Autist dev prefers to write a bunch of useless coffee diaries instead of working on the game.
>>
Derrin will end racism
>>
>>739829550
>physics-based
so things glitch out, get stuck or fly into the air randomly?
>>
>>739822073
Well I finally redownloaded it maybe ten years after I had first played it? Yup it still appeals in many ways to my brand of tism. I haven't gotten out of the first dungeon yet. Everything looks the same. I still like it, but again fuck this dungeon. I'm glad that NPC guy seemed to have more to say as we ran around bashing zombie skulls in with cage bars.
>>
>>739831101
more like you trip over your shoelaces pretty often
>>
>>739822440
Best combat I've ever seen, genuinely, but it takes a while to learn because there's nothing else like it. Once you understand it though, it's amazing and you can do all kinds of crazy shit that you wouldn't consider possible outside of a VR game or something where you can manually control each limb in real time.
>>
>>739831101
Nah, it's not Elder Scrolls physics, it's pretty reasonable and realistic. Setting up chairs or benches or whatever as tripping hazards, making your enemies trip over them, then smashing their skulls while they try to get up is a pretty strong tactic.
>>
Is it playable with controller?
>>
is sir weaker in this patch? he died to my worn condition mediocre bardiche in like 4 or 5 hits
>>
I've been waiting on this to come out of EA for ages. Hope it actually finishes. Maybe in another 6 years.
>>
>>739831924
I think 5 good hits to the head would always take him down
>>
>>739826241
>I guess it's all just RNG dungeons
No. It's a series of handcrafted dungeons that are often maze like and confusing. They're the same every time, except some of the loot is randomized. Every few months it gets updated and sometimes the dungeon gets deeper.

>Is it fun?
Very, at least for a while, if you have the patience and time to learn it. Using the in game journal is helpful. But the whole thing is basically a tech demo, and introductory lore for the complete game, an RPG called Sui Generis, that might exist one day
>>
>>739831876
stabbing is harder on the controller because you dont have the accuracy of the mouse, and the inventory management and skill trees are a pain in the ass too, however footwork and camera control is more comfortable on the controller
>>
>>739832045
maybe he is less aggressive, or the AI overall is just more reactive to feints now
>>
File: file.png (90 KB, 543x125)

So wtf was Sui Generis supposed to be and why isn't there any information about it on the internet since 2015?
>>
how old are the devs? are they really planning to put out an entire rpg after spending so long on this? well i guess most of the hard gameplay and physics stuff is done at this point
>>
You know what's kind of nice now? I can start the game with force push. Which is a godsend when you suck at the combat.
>>
I have some pretty good Exanima webms but I can't post them because sound isn't allowed. Fucking why
>>
>>739832391
force magic is a really strong tool especially early on when you're unarmored and want to fight safely. I feel like the starting blast move is better than the other ones you get like the continuous wave or that long range one.
>>
>tranny mc
>>
>>739822073
>PC only
Shame. Unfortunately I have a family I spend time with and work on a computer for my job, so I'm not also gaming in my office.
>>
>>739822440
not really, you get into the game learn the gimmick and then realize it has 0 depth despite being physics based as every fight you do the exact same movements on the exact same NPC's
game is so fucking old that they started adding magic to combat how SHIT the game is
>>
>>739833002
have you explored the sewers or golem level?
>>
>update
Kek. Did Spark going EA actually made these fags work?
>>
>>739822440
It's a tech demo. There is no creative or artistic element in the game. Imagine a game made by a computational physicist for his PhD thesis. Sure it's a cool gimmick, but doesn't mean much if you can't turn it into an actual game.
>>
>>739822440
It has nice boobies
>>
>>739831682
It's neat if you play along with it.
If you don't you can beat the entire expert arena (not the campaign where you hire people) by simply gluing yourself into the chest of every NPC as a short character with a shield and crouching while swinging a mace on their shins over and over. Not even the giga boss who can swing 10 foot halberds with the weight of a feather with microsecond feints can touch you.

This obviously sucks so it's much more fun baiting them into a lunge so you can headshot them with the giant mace to the side of their head in one shot after a 180 swing.

These new triple captchas will be the fucking end of me.
>>
I wish they'd add a map and save function. I mean I get it, I understand why not. I even respect it. Doesn't mean I like it tho
>>
>>739832320
Supposed to be a grand open world RPG, they posted some demos of in on YouTube a long time ago. Exanima is basically just a combat demo, the full game had more stats for dialogue and stealth and shit like that. It looked really good.

Will it ever happen? A man can dream.

>>739832791
You can customize your character before starting the game.

>>
>>739826241
I liked it for a few hours until the maze maps pissed me off backtracking and pixel hunting for shit to progress.
It's a million times more enjoyable to have a map to consult when needed. Obviously this might be the selling point for some people but I just don't enjoy not progressing and not knowing what I missed.
>>
>>739833498
>swinging a mace on their shins
isn't crouching nerfed? it is hard to do even with manlet build
>>
>>739833594
I really doubt there is any paid marketing for this game, it seems like somebody's passion project that they'll keep working on until they die, like dwarf fortress or something
>>
>>739833671
This is where I'm basically at with it. I like it. It's also annoying me.
>>
>>739833885
>I like it. It's also annoying me.
That's how you know you're a real gamer.
>Chen throwing down controller then picking it back up again comic
>>
>>739832320
They ban you if you mention it on the forums. People are still pissed at their kickstarter page.
No doubt they've blown all that money long ago hence the snails pace progression of a evidently enjoyable tech demo.

Backers got Exanima for free but fuckall else. It was extremely barebones on "release".

>>739833787
This was years ago I admit but I remember timing the crouch with the swing rather than just holding it, since you tend to fall over if you do.

>>739833885
There are maps on the dev forums. Use em.
>>
>>739833513
there are maps you can find, I just wish we could mark stuff on it ourselves.
the fact that there isn't a real save system is bullshit, there's like 10 levels now and you don't get checkpoints past the first few. it's telling how many people backup saves so they don't lose all that time to tripping into a pit.
>>
I've gotten good at the combat mostly, but doing hand to hand in the arena always ends up looking like a drunken brawl with tables and chairs knocked over everywhere while everyone is swinging wildly at each other, usually missing completely, and sometimes landing a devastating 1HKO shot that sprays blood everywhere
>>
>>739833947
at least crouching now aims much higher so you can do power swings with crouch into headshot
>>739834128
they should've at least added autosaves near the stupid bridge making areas in the markets and gentry, since it tends to be inconsistent and the loot is honestly not that good unless you want to collect specific shit
>>
>ten fucking years
>it's still barely a fucking tech demo
>a tech demo for a game they haven't even started

Overgrowth 2: Medieval Boogaloo
>>
I always get around level 4 and then I drop it. Fighting the monsters ain't fun or interesting and the magic system is kinda shit.

They should just hurry up and put an end to Exanima. It just doesn't feel worth playing unless you play Arena.
>>
>>739822073
It drives me up the wall that I am such a smooth brain that I can't escape the first floor, I refuse to use a guide.
I'm absolutely zozzled by shit like dragging a dude to find a key under his corpse or ripping open and overturning every basket to search for shit like a compass.
So much fun, so much crazy.
>>
>>739834739
>the magic system is kinda shit
as far as the current system, a good chunk of the powers are pretty niche but kinda cool in the rare moment you find a use for it, like levitating objects or that big barrier wall.
but 90% of the time you're just buffing yourself with shell/strikes and knocking people over with blast.
>>
>>739834739
The progression saving arena is such a stingy cunt when it comes to awards for winning shit.
I played legit for 30+ hours and could only TRAIN a dude to master but all of the equipment still cost assloads for a single piece of proper armor. If you don't get that you'll just lose your dude to a random headshot and he won't even recover.

I found a trainer exe to give me gold so I could actually try different weapons and enjoy the higher tiers with hired fighters capable of doing anything. No more endless pugilisms on master difficulty just to avoid being struck in twain.
>>
>>739834128
>there are maps you can find, I just wish we could mark stuff on it ourselves.
It's weird to me that there are shit like pens and chalk and paintbrushes all over the fucking place but you can't use ANY of them. I can sort of appreciate why from a coding standpoint, but considering the game's already really advanced physics engine, I have a hard time believing it's too much for them to implement.

You have literal inkpots and pens all over the place and you can't write on anything. Even as decorative set pieces, that's still pretty absurd.
>>
>>739835094
Arena is a big fucking grind especially when a few fight types need you to have several fighters leveled and geared.
It's also weird that you just lose if your first character gets clobbered, so people just hire another dweeb and use him as a surrogate main character that won't just end the run if you receive an unlucky bonk to the head.
>>
>>739834987
You only need to find a key to finish the first floor, to open a gate that's just outside of where you started.

One thing is that the game is very hard to play on smaller screens, because you really need to closely examine every room and it's easy to miss details that are very important
>>
>>739832791
She's literally a female. You have the option to choose which sex you want to play as at the beginning.
>>
>>739835384
should also mention that the first level key is the only key that can open two doors, dunno about the new garden level however
>>
>>739835562
I'm thankful that nearly every key is one-use so you can just use it and drop it. would be a nightmare trying to organize them
>>
>>739834432
>for a game they haven't even started
Proofs? I've heard different things across the board, but is there evidence that they have actually done nothing?

I mean, Sui Generis sounds like it'd be fucking amazing so I really hope it works out. But it wouldn't surprise me if it never does either.
>>
>make female character
>walk up to zombie
>let him slowly beat her to death while he whiffs 80% of his attacks
>>
>>739835757
They had a playable demo of the full game, in a castle, like 10 years ago
>>
>>739835757
>evidence that they have actually done nothing
Anon, come on now.
The lack of evidence is the evidence you need to assert this.
It's a tiny team of Kickstarter fund grabbers. They've reworked the entire physics system at least once and everything takes forever. They aren't going to shadow drop a game out of nowhere. This is basically the same route Overgrowth went.
>>
>>739836970
trust the plan
>>
>>739822073
Is this that "everything is physics" game that was an early Kickstarter like 10+ years ago?
>>
>>739835654
Learning the inventory management is pretty wacky. On the second floor you start getting a whole bunch of pouches and shit, and since I don't know what's useful and what isn't, swapping shit in and figuring out how it works becomes its own kind of "game" I guess.

I kinda appreciate how hands-off the game is when it comes to directing the player, but I'm not sure whether it's actually better to do things this way or not.
>>
>>739835360
>>739835094
For the Arena mode, I just use cheat engine to get money. Otherwise, fighting in the higher tiers requires hours of grinding just to buy decent gear, and then you lose it all if/when you lose a fight.

The lower tiers are a lot of fun and better balanced though
>>
So, how do you beat the big ass monster without dropping him down a hole or glitching his ass somewhere?
Last I played you could maybe get one or two hits in before he either chest slammed you over or just combo'd your ass on the ground after getting a slap in. There was no way to duck or avoid his attacks other than running the opposite way.
Only in the arena have I managed to do him in because of distracting teammates.
>>
>>739836970
Speaking of Overgrowth, what ever happened with that game? The dev just dipped out and was never heard from again?
>>
>>739837321
I believe so. Think he crashed out on twitter over something.
>>
>>739837261
The ogre? I beat him with the great sword. Click, swing right, crouch swing left, move backwards. This does a strong low swing, usually enough to hit his legs and make him stumble. If it worked, stab him in the face, and make sure to step forward while stabbing to add strength to the strike. If it only kinda worked, then don't stab, do a quick overhead swing and hit his head if possible, then fall back and control his movement while you make another good place to put your sword through his fucking face.

The ogre/troll is bad enough, but later there are these statue guys with massive halberds they swing effortlessly. Fighting them is very difficult.
>>
>>739837261
if you are talking about the big guy in the archives/brass level, stay behind a table so if you get knocked to the ground you are protected by the table and can also hit him in places that he can't reach you, otherwise you could try headshotting him constantly to keep stunning him until he is dead but that requires alot of skill, force thaum helps alot with that but it may mess up your timing and he might get more aggressive or scared them run away
>>
>>739833531
>mfw I’m the OP
>mfw I wish someone was paying me to shill this game on /v/
Kinda makes me wonder if “whistleblowers” like this anon have ever been right about anything even once in their lives.
>>
>>739837590
He responds to damage by getting staggered now? Before he just ran up and bitch slapped your ass over and you were finished 9/10 times before getting up again. His hands were so huge and sweeping it didn't matter what you tried to dodge.
>>
>>739837707
>someone calls you a shill
I-i'm Julian Assange?
I am...
>>
>>739837750
I don't know if it's damage or physics, but hitting his legs hard enough fucks him up for a bit, and so does hitting his head while he's unbalanced
>>
>>739837261
If you're referring to the fellow on level 4, he's honestly best left avoided. Poking him with a polearm through a doorway works, and he's vulnerable to slashing, but fighting him fair is a terrible idea and also a death sentence if you have anything less than a full suit of plate. The special mace on level 6 can stun him, if you wanna come back later.
>>
>>739825060
I heard recorders were pretty popular in middle ages, so that's probably it.
>>
>>739838179
I’ve never once heard anyone who has managed to play anything remotely impressive on a recorder. I’m sure it was different back then if it was an actually popular instrument, but it makes me wonder if it’s even possible to play something artful on one in 2026 kek
>>
>>739839069
Not sure about artful, but sounds kinda fun when played properly, I guess. Something like medieval version of denpa songs.
