Putting aside the dogshit economy and even someone who's 45 had only slight potential of getting a start before the latter was pulled up all the way instead of only most of the way, the brain damage that murrica has about living at home is completely strange to me. Back before the ruling elites drove the economy off a cliff it was still a a bad policy, but now its just insane. Most places that pushed this stuff had a heavy negative effect in the long term Japan is a good example. There are towns entirely full of old people because all the young people leave, and other shit has happened too. The big issue is that during the boom years in the 80s sure, people went out on their own (I can remember being envious as a teenager that parents just bought/rented their son an apartment in high school or beyond as if he was a h-game protag, but the younger kids and often the women stayed at home) but the hikikkomori issues were a massive snap back when people didn't feel that, either socially or financially, their life wasn't going as society expected. So they went back home, and never left their room out of shame; if they were lucky their parents took care of them. The system is completely fucked and until we revamp it, even aside from lying "reality TV" nonsense, its not worth shitting on people over this sort of thing. There's also the issue that the reverse is happening in a major way - that with rising health care costs, older people's savings are NOT going to pay for long term care anymore.. that having someone living at home helping their parents in their 80s and shit is important (even if they're still working and healthy). The whole system is fucked and both social and financial realignments need to happen in a major way.
