>with a goal
So left one somehow lacks a goal?

right
I did not care for mario odyssey's collectathon "here's 50 kinda easy moons laying around in an area lol" style
64 struck a fine balance
>>
>>739870473
they do. whoever made the pic doesn't see stars (even if the map changes specifically for them) as goal

Left

This. OP pic is a false dichotomy. Just make a good game, whether it's more open or less open, just make it good, simple as.
>>
>>739870087
Both have their place. It'd be a shame if one disappeared completely in favor of focusing exclusively on the other.

It's weird I prefer sandbox 3D Mario but somehow Bowser's Fury felt... Wrong. Like unfocused and unsatisfying. It didn't help that Bowser was distracting me every 5 minutes.

You can have linear levels in an open world collection game.
>>
>>739870087
Left and it's not even close. The problem with right is that linear platformers are straight up ass if they aren't hard enough, and it's really difficult to make 3d platformers hard without making them obnoxious. Once you push 3d platformers to the limit you start to realize how much of an issue depth perception is. Mario devs know this and it's why they make 3D Mario games so fucking easy.

3D Collectathons work so much better because they play into the strengths of 3D platformers (exploration, having multiple ways to approach problems with a varied moveset).

I only liked world and 64 all other mario games are bad

How the hell is Galaxy not considered like 64?
>Open hub that grows as you unlock more
>Galaxies (Paintings) with Stars
>Bowser fights

You’re dumb
>>
>>739870087
Right.

Left is tons of fun the first round but they also tend to have a lot of "that part"

Hell 64 is 50% that part, sunshine 90%.

I replayed 3d world 4 times because every second is fun and I never replayed odyssey because I always remember all the "that parts"
>>
I love them both, but the Galaxy games are probably the worst here, cause the movement is so slow, so I’d go with left. Odyssey and Bowsers Fury were both excellent. Though 3D World multiplayer is kino

>>739872075
You can just not play “those parts”. If there are worlds you don’t like, get more stars/moons in the ones you do. That’s the nice thing about replaying left
>>
>>739870087
I'm on team "I don't really care about 3d mario"
>>
>>739870087
linear for 2D
open for 3D
>>
>>739870087
Galaxy 2 made me realize that right is really, really fucking good when done right
>>
Right by far.
64 is legendary but it's clear a lot of its stars, especially near the end, were just "fuck it we got to get to 120."
Sunshine is notoriously rushed.
Odyssey honestly isn't as bad because the game doesn't kick you out to the "hub" every time Mario picks up a moon.

But you really can't beat a solidly designed linear level with escalating setpieces.

I love 64 and 3D world. sunshine was fine but they ran out of ideas and some of the levels are flat out awful. The galaxy games suck fucking ass. 3D land was kiddie shit

mario odyssey is more like a banjo kazooie game then anything else
>>
>>739870087
>left means having to side with Sunshine
>right means having to side with Galaxy
fuck idk which i dislike more
>>
>>739870087
3D World is the only good game on the right. Galaxy is sluggish, baby shit while 3D Land is just proto 3D World with uninspired level themes.

>Once you push 3d platformers to the limit you start to realize how much of an issue depth perception is.
3D land had the benefit of the 3DS's gimmick so that was pretty cool.
