Besides the annoying waitlist experience Rolex is too flashy, it attracts the worst kind of people. The odds of getting robbed go up dramatically because it's the only watch 95% of the population can recognize and wearing a Rolex comes across as "look at me I'm wearing a Rolex" energy
>>
>>739871367
the replica scene is huge. i haven't kept up with it in a couple years but several factories in china were putting out unbelievable reproductions. like, you could swap the parts out for genuine rolex and it still functions, level of reproduction.

Bond has loads of marketing deals. There's probably restrictions on the car as well. I don't know if the old n64 game licensed or required the watch, but the goldeneye movie did.
>>
>>739871810
every single bond has had product placement
>>
>>739871905
Bond movies are full of product placement.
>>
>>739871810
Blatant product placement is practically a defining element of the franchise. You can't have Bond without shilling some luxury item or some sort.

And this is still nowhere near as bad as MGS4 stopping mid-game to just slobber over Sony's dick in a ridiculous 4th wall breaking moment.
>>
>>739871905
Bond wears a Seamaster Diver 300m which usually runs between 7-12k unless you get it in bronze or gold or something
>>
>>739871556
It's not replication, it's the actual Chinese Rolex factories making more supply than Rolex contracted them to make and then selling these extras themselves. They do it for all luxury items
>>
>>739872142

By that same logic, you don't need a phone to tell the time because you can look at the position of the sun. Ditto for using it to browse the net when your PC can do that, or make calls when a landline can do that.
>>
>>739872880
Whats stopping me from getting an identical fake and pretending to have spent the money without actually doing so?
Most people can't tell the difference between a rolex and a folex.
>>
>>739873931
because then you'd have to either pretend to be wealthy all the way, or be "that guy" who has an expensive watch despite being poor, which is pathetic desu

>or be "that guy" who has an expensive watch despite being poor
So most people who buy luxury goods?
>>
>>739872142
i don't think that's how it works with replica watches. i remember reading how they reverse engineer the parts and such. it's iterative and the factories that replicate the watches get better over time. they put out different generations as feedback comes in. manufacturers come and go as the chinese government busts their operations.
it's actually pretty neat. there's a big community on reddit for it.
>>
>>739874263
There's counterfeit people who legit just straight up reverse engineer and counterfeit. And then there's the "counterfeiter" who are actually the factories where the legit shit comes from and they do sly shit on the side for themselves. Supposedly where the latter is the biggest problem is in the luxury clothing brand industry.
>>
File: real and fake.jpg (986 KB, 3024x4032)

>>739874892
i definitely agree with you about it being a thing. clothing for sure, because it's often done off contracts (and why not just do another run and sell it yourself?)

i figure it's because of how locked down the high-end watch market is. as far as i'm aware, the best gray/black market watches are all reverse engineered. some places will just do externals and put an off-the-shelf action in the watch. others cut their own gears and and emulate the same internals as rolex. i just think it's cool work. it'd be neat to have the job of replicating the intricate internals of a 20,000$ watch. it's crazy that they can make something that is so convincingly similar and sell it for like 600$ or whatever.
>>
>>739871350
I have this exact watch from middle school days and it's still running and beeping 20 years later
>>
For me, it's a Casio. You literally don't need morr
>>
I wasted about $600 collecting automatic watches. I still check my phone for time because I'm too lazy to set the time everytime I wear them.
>t. Citizen promaster diver/seiko 5/bunch of casio owner
>>
>>739870624
expensive automatic watches are status symbols, sure. But there are many reasons to still wear a watch, many jobs or places you don't use or can't use phones. Also a quick look on your wrist is faster than pulling out your phone.
>>
>>739871815
I like it but I also kinda have a boner for the open heart
>>
>>739871015
>>739871225
Bond doesn’t get to choose the wristband of his watch. They don’t lay out 7 watches for him. He follows orders. He takes whatever Q branch gives him.
>>
>>739871350
note: these watches also come in metal so you don't look a cheap fag who bought a single watch in middle school and is still wearing it now (while still being a cheap fag cause its casio)
also the metal holds up better than a rubber watchband

No, it doesn't. A metal BAND may last longer than a plastic band, but that doesn't matter when the metal CLASP breaks just as quickly as a plastic band.

Nato straps are for gays
>>
>>739877269

Content centered around wristwatches is hilarious. You get all the sensationalist videos and articles titled along the lines of "Rolex is FINISHED" or "Tissot can't stop messing up" or "REAL MEN only buy this brand now". Remember, it's a device you tie to your wrist so it tells you the time. It's fucking ridiculous and impossible to take seriously.

I get the "luxury" aspect from them. But when you get down to the reality of the Watchole...its just the faggiest thing ever.
You buy them to impress other suckers that got gaslit into purchasing same or more expensive pieces of metal than you.
Literally just like women buying bags. An industry made to larp and juice money out of retards in high positions but with higher expenses, not wages, but expenses.
>>
>>739879852
It's not? Please, anon. Enlighten all of us here how it's a status symbol to show off how masculine and wealthy your are.

>>
>>739879910

That is EXACTLY what it is. A status symbol that can occasionally have some use as a time-telling device. enabled by the hubris of a society so banal it legitimizes it, along with everything else.
>>
>>739872880
flaunting wealth is pathetic
>>
>>739879965
It's a time-telling device. Everything else is just masturbatory. A status symbol implies it is recognized as such. People will look at your Rolex and think you're retarded because you're a plumber who spent several months worth of your income to buy a wrist watch to impress strangers.

The watch making industry is genius in the sense that they’ve convinced middle and upper class midwits with disposable income all over the world that 30 bucks worth of materials and overpriced labour that could be done just as effectively and more quickly by a machine Is worth splurging out hundreds of thousands of dollars to show off to your equally vapid peers.

My two cents on this is that CERTAIN brands aren't that retarded to buy. There was a time last year when I bunch of my shit that was supposed to be easy to close went into lawsuits. If you've ever had to sue and insurance company, let me tell you it takes fucking forever. Log story short, I sold my Omega Aqua Terra, Cartier Tank, and Tudor Black Bay for 5k more than I paid for them. If you can get something like a Rolex for MSRP, it's not nearly as retarded a purchase as you might think. The key is MSRP, and also not being forced to buy some shitbox Rolex that you don't like to have the privilege to purchase the one you actually want. That's why I like Omega. You can go into an Omega boutique and actually buy a fucking watch. Go to Rolex dealer and you're MAYBE getting on a wait-list to buy one in 3 fucking years.
