It was already going downhill after 2008-2009, assuming that was at all good, but everyone still had enough momentum to put out a reasonably good experience between the AAA trends that were metastasising (movie games, Ubisoft chore worlds, mandatory DLC/passes etc.). Titanfall (2014) is genuinely standout but also quite clearly Call of Duty with some extras bolted on. Meanwhile, although Doom 2016 set off the clusterfuck nuDoom franchise and the resulting Zoom Clone trend it did shake up the FPS formula influenced by Cod's ADS/high-TTK brown filter generic desert tacticool etc. etc. cancer. It was refreshing and largely deserving of its praise therefore. Even neglecting their contemporaries, everything after mostly sucked dick thanks to the previously mentioned trends and I've not had any interest in modern gaming outside of Doom Eternal.
