I'm playing Grandia currently. Played it as a kid and didn't remember much about it. The writing/localization are terrible, characters are one note and it feels like the dialogue was written by a pre-AI simplistic text generator. But there's some charm to that, dialogue is minimal compared to combat, and it allows for a layer of abstraction which doesn't pull you out like it does with something like metaphor, where dialogue and relationship sim is 60% of the game and yet the characters speak like cardboard props. The battle system is super fun also, particularly the IP system, I love tempo systems in RPGs like this and Metaphor's press turns which allow you to manipulate turn order through combat strategy. I hope the next Clair Obscur game implements something like that. Lies of P would be another good shout. Beautiful art style, music, and general atmosphere, and also benefits in the same way that Grandia does from being a simpler story with limited dialogue so you won't be comparing it constantly to E33's writing which is just unmatched in terms of believable and natural dialogue.

I fundamentally do not like 'it was all a dream' stories, they completely devalue the stakes of the plot. Was there a touching story? Yes. But it utterly devalues further viewings of the plot. I was really hoping they weren't going that route when I first played, but could kind of tell based on the artstyle and the apocalyptic motif. What a shame.I'd give it a 9/10, very good gameplay, excellent soundtrack, wonderful graphics, but the story is just too self-terminating. It was a good plot, but more than anything the industry needs a great JRPG-style game like this with hope.
