It seems like an oversight that the game treated where the enemy was drawn on the screen as it's absolute position instead of where it actually is in relation to its shadow.

Again I'm not taking about height. The game takes place on a fucking grid. The only way to accurately represent a flying enemy on a 2d grid is a drop shadow. The fucking drop shadow indicates that the enemy is not in line with the players attack. If the bat is considered grounded IT SHOULD BE WHERE THE DROP SHADOW IS.

Personally it's just the "every normal enemy you meet in the game isn't a mob that you beat the shit out of, but they will deal a shit ton of damage to you whenever they land a hit and they don't go down instantly (unless you have a shit load of bonuses collected etc. already), also when you die you lose all of the STUFF you need to level / power up and need to go collect it again, and god help you if you fuck up on the way there because now it's all gone forever." Also the whole thing with bosses having tight windows of opportunity between their attacks to do damage, when to dodge etc.

It just feels to me at this point that I've seen everything that particular style has to offer and people are basically just re-using it without any meaningful or interesting twist to the concept. But I'm sure the fact that I'm getting old and my reaction times are decaying as quickly as I am don't help.

The core of the gameplay is nothing like zelda the only real similarities are Link's Awakening artstyle and when you go back to the village after a boss and now you opened a ledge where you can jump down a guy's chimney to open the chest you saw in the back room, big Minish Cap vibes there
Then Dark Souls, I only ever played dark souls for 15 minutes but the controls were so unbelievably dogshit that I had to turn it off. Mina the controls are butter smooth 5 minutes in I was digging and popping and jumping and smashing like second nature it's so fun
