Anon I don't know what kind of gotcha you were going for but compare your videos to OP. When I say "aligned to a pixel grid" it means you can't have half-step movements, they couldn't do that at all on the NES or gameboy because it was obviously impossible at that resolution. You can riff on me for extreme nitpicking but it's true, it makes things a lot smoother than they should be because you're not moving pixel by pixel, which matters if you're going for authenticity.

I disagree since they've gone in on it so hard to the point that it's received pushback when they could've just made a few small compromises to the palette, etc in order to make it more palatable. That they've gone for subpixels as a default just makes that all the more baffling when they've already gone almost the entire length to make it authentic, and it's not even that much of a divisive decision too, like I've never ever seen someone who thought "ugh old games are way too jarring and snappy I need things to be extremely smooth" but a cursory search of the steam discussions has people complaining about the subpixel movement

I know some people really love it when games give you a huge amount of modifiers to adjust the difficulty exactly to your liking, but I just find it annoying. If the game's design is fucked in some way, like the game is too slow (The Dark Ages) or too easy or difficult, the easy way out is just to give players a fuckton of modifiers and let them design their own game, but I don't want to design a game. That's the designer's job, and it doesn't change the fact the game's design is flawed. I encountered this with Revita, which has so many annoying little design flaws in it that you can "fix" with the numerous accessibility options the game throws at you. No mouse lock in windowed mode by default? The visuals are so busy by default that obstacles like spikes get hidden by all the debris enemies leave behind? WELL, YOU CAN FIX IT BY TURNING ON THESE OPTIONS!! It just makes it fucking annoying to discuss a game's flaws because hurr hurr just fix it yourself. Why can't you just design a good fucking game!? Not that Mina looks bad or anything, but just have people fucking deal with the difficulty. It's how we did it all the time in the 90s and 2000s and if a game was too difficult you either got good or played something else and we all just lived with the results.

Slightly relevant closing argument; I once made a game that some people complained was too hard because "lives are outdated" and "I don't like timers in games". I ended up just putting in an assist mode that gives the player infinite lives, more health and making bottomless pits hurt you rather than insta-kill you. That way I still had a say over how the game was experienced, but still made it more accessible for players who don't like the "rough" edges of old-school games. Not like the game was super punishing, but some people think it's the game's fault if they ever see a game over screen these days it feels like.

Well the problem here is with the low res pixel art style, I haven't played it either but hollow knight is a high res drawn art game. I'm assuming what you're referring to is that the hitboxes in hollow knight are probably exactly matching the attack visuals instead of internally being literal boxes and circles like most games.

I can't count the amount of times I tried to convey this point to people. I guess it just comes down to first principles or what value you like to place in games. I don't mind the options and modifiers, in fact I do think they have their place but it's in the endgame phase, when you're done with the main game and you want to squeeze out the most you can out of it. If you really enjoyed a game you'll want to just fuck around with it. But at least in the first playthrough I do want it to be a concise and well thought out experience. After that you can fuck around with difficulty settings and other modifiers if you like the game enough.
