It's only if you try to cheese it things get weird and you need to know what you're doing.If you mindlessly grind too much, then you end up too high BR and the enemies gets scaled up.The whole chaining thing is designed to maximise skill aqcuisition, since in this game skills are upgraded based on usage, so you want to use as much as you can while winning less battles (hence the strats all involve some kind of high level monster) so you unlock the higher tier skills faster. It's not required at all unless you want to early game some option bosses which is intended for the post-game.
