The comedy in this game is so weird, the game is serious when Terra is the focus but once it becomes about literally anyone else we keep flip flopping between comedic moments and major developments or maybe the comedic moments ARE the major developments. The segment where Sabin chases Kefka, Kefka poisons the river, we see what happens with Cyan's Kingdom and Cyan joining Sabin is so awkward, the mood completely shifts between minutes of playtime.
Celes is the main character, but you don't realize that until way later in the game. Her and Kefka are two sides of the same coin, and her striving to do right and Kefka striving to ruin everything is the main theme of the game. It helps that the main romance of the game is her and Locke as well. People may be tricked into thinking Locke is the main character, he's the main character in the same way Tuxedo Mask is the main character of Sailor Moon.

Granted I think you can do this pixel style. Anyways his style is way darker with the semi-realism characters but then very crazy outfits. Games typically let the player be the only guy with crazy outfits while everyone else is toned down compared to the player. We want the player to stand out. And you have to remember illustrations and styles sometimes just don't work in different mediums. At the end of the day it's still different.
