Funnily enough the (kinda) touch on this in Scarlet and Violet's DLC. The rival character who gets a massive complex over the MC being both a better trainer and gaining the favor of a local Legendary he liked even when everyone else thought it was the villain leads to him taking battle way more seriously, which included him dumping members of team like Furret, Cramorant, and Yanmega. They do confirm in some optional postgame content that he still has them around even if he doesn't battle them anymore, however.
