WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE???
>>
>>739978287
If you want a good MetroidVania, play The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Game Boy.
>>
I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few amazing ones that simply got lost in the sea of slop.
>>
>>739978287
Grime 2 is great. Never heard of the other ones.
>>
>>739978494
Sound advice, but that would involve OP and every other belly aching fag on this site to release the enormous chip.on their shoulder that comprises 90% of their identity
>>
>>739978287
I don't. Constance is a great game.
>>
>>739978287
Well it makes sense since metroidvanias are to indies what open world is to AAA games
Essentially copy pasted and done to death
>>
>>739978287
Metroidvanias should tell us the amount of rooms they have as a dick measuring contest.
>>
At this point, the only indievanias worth playing are the ones that look the most appealing to you. It kind of doesn't matter past that.
>>
I just want them to have rich playstyle customization like Dawn of Sorrow did. Even Bloodstained, a carbon copy of DoS's mechanics on a technical level, failed to have a good enough variety of actually decent options compared to the cookie cutter best progression.
>>
I wish more games would use the old episode-based structure of DOS games.
Instead of a Metroidvania, a game with 5–6 well-polished linear levels, and to address the "problem" that the game might become repetitive, it would be enough to create 3 or 4 different episodes, each with its own theme and 5 or 6 new levels.
>>
If I made an indievania, would you skip it and call it slop...
>>
>>739979321
Millennials are pretty much the boomers of video games, grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth and became the worst kinds of consumers imaginable
>>

>>
Metroidvanias are the hardest genre to pull off why did every soulless indie dev jump onto the genre?
>>

>>
>>739978287
I have "I have [thing] fatigue" fatigue.
>>
>>739978287
what's wrong with videogames existing? maybe you should just go live in a cabin in the woods with no electricity and no outside contact with the world if other people making things bothers you so much
>>
>>739980840
>Metroidvanias are the hardest genre to pull off
It's literally a melting pot of concepts, just do all of the gameplay and stitch it together.
>>
>>739980840
no they are not retarded tranny. they are the easiest genre to do. that's why there are so many of them
>>
literally one of those came out this year
what do you mean fatigure, you retard? they arent making these kinds of games anymore because balatro clones take 1/8th of the time and despite being 90x more oversaturated, people still keep buying them (gambling addicts)
>>
>>739980929
>>739981397
The genre is so easy to pull off that the overwhelming majority of metroidvanias are total ass and the good ones can be counted on two hands
>>
>>739981621
The GREAT ones can be counted on two hands. The ones that are good enough to kill some time and look pretty while doing it are nigh innumerable. It's a reliably decent formula where the biggest actual problem with it is oversaturation.
>>
>>739981621
every genre is like that except they are not as popular and easy to make as metroidvanias
>>
File: 048965046504650465.png (998 KB, 1217x636)

>>739981716
Oversaturation should have killed this one...
>>
>>739982357
Lost Ruins is actually halfway interesting in how it is deliberately slower paced. I do wish it were better overall but its emphasis on traps, status effects and spacing aren't tired ideas in the context of a metroidvania. This one tried something a little different.
>>
>>739980929
Then main crux is that the label "metroidvania" has become so genericized that literally any non-linear platformer gets it now.
It should literally only be used for games either directly related to or directly inspired from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and should share a majority of the gameplay elements.
That also means no, Metroid games are NOT "metroidvanias". That's like calling a sedan an SUV.
>>
>>739982718
"Numbers go up" isn't a good enough reason to call something a separate genre.
>>
>>739982790
Yes it is.
The RPG elements are a critical part of the gameplay and therefore one of the defining aspects of the label.
>>
>>739982718
You'd inevitably call them some form of "Action Adventure" (as all people espousing genre prescriptive end up doing as a catch-all) and you'd run into the same problem from similarly thinking boomers saying realtime gameplay immediately precludes anything from similarity with Colossal Cave Adventure.
>>
>>739979360
Looks gay and it's probably too easy
>>
>>739983073
>Action Adventure
Personally, I think that tag applies distinctly well to Metroidvanias. Also classic survival horrors, while we're at it. That said, I'm thinking of the term as its namesake implies and not the homogenized catch-all blob it's come to represent in the 21st century, like I see nothing wrong with referring to both Super Metroid and Symphony of the Night as such. Certainly more so than something like, I dunno, The Last of Us. I feel like that's where a genre term like action adventure loses the plot.
>>
>>739981716

I'm seeing Metroid maps from all of these games so I don't know about this fake-Metroidvania you speak of.
>>
Objective requirements to be considered a true metroidvania:

1. Interconnected world gated by ability acquisition/area bosses

2. RPG-style character development system involving stats and equipable items

3. Action/platformer style freeform gameplay that emphasizes positioning and precision instead of stamina rollslop

Anything else isn't a fucking metroidvania

Getting more health and missiles is RPG progression. You don't need the other stats.

Hollow Knight, Nine Sols, Blasphemous, Bloodstained, Ender Lilies, Rabi-Ribi, Axiom Verge, Momodora, Ori, and Cave Story. The genre has overwhelmingly positive game after overwhelmingly positive game.
>>
>>739979321
Why do you think having a complaint is tantamount to an identity? It's like the "hating popular things isn't a personality" quip that people keep using. It's not actually about making an impression on you personally, believe it or not.

>>739984372
Cave Story isn't a metroidvania and I'm tired of people trying to insist that it is just because you get access to the booster. If that's all it takes to qualify for some people then the fucking Megaman games are metroidvanias and I'm pretty certain we can agree that isn't the case.
The game isn't designed for exploration and varying paths on the scale of any metroid game, most of it is a linear throughline and there are a handful of sidequests where backtracking is necessary.

Is there any post 2018 indievania that's actually better than HK? I played Luna Nights and Cave Story ages ago and loved them, but HK was such a drag I've never completed it after multiple attempts to get into it.
It's looming shadow puts me off trying other indievanias, since they either copy HK or are directly compared to it.
so are all indievanias so shit that they can't compete with a game I find mid as hell? Or did HK just luck out being the first one and there are some better ones?

im sick of metroidvanias becoming soulslikes.
authentic metroid is a power trip where you become an unstoppable force with unrivaled hp, damage, and mobility.

a fucking 2d darksouls wannabe will never give you that because the focus has to be all on the combat from start to finish. a series of dodge rolls against a simon says boss fight is not why I play these games.
I want an evolving toolkit with meaningful options. silk song has like 5 core upgrades and I only care about 2. the rest are just non-stacking combat gear that you opt into, and they stop mattering at all once you find what you like.

Metroid is NOT a metroidvania and I don't understand why you retards don't get this
>>
>>739986149
There's not enough pure metroidlikes to bother treating it as its own thing. On the other hand, soulsvanias should be a separate genre.
>>
>>739986285
The whole point of the term is that it's a combination of elements from Super Metriod and Castlevania SotN. Ironically SotN is a metroidvania but Metroid itself isn't simply because of the lack of RPG elements that SotN added.
>>
>>739978287
Eh, at least indievanias can be good sometimes. There's far worse genres that are common in the indie market.
>>
>>739986285
How do you decide if it's a Soulsvania? Ender Lilies doesn't drop your money when you die even though the rest of it is Souls.
>>
>>739986149
its in the name, and you call other people retard?

>>
>>739986426
Technically the term Metroidvania originally was used to specifically describe SOTN itself, and wasn't until later that it became a genre.
>>
>>739986514

Souls-like in the context of Metroidvanias is largely just a marketing ploy to capitalize on the popularity of souls-likes. Both styles already have a lot of overlapping elements, that a term like "Soulsvania" would be redundant.

I've had it for years honestly.

I never want to see another instance of or variation of the double jump ever again.
Do something original goddammit.
Whenever I see a wall or platform just slightly out of the base game jump height, usually less than ten minutes into the game, I immediately know there's not one original idea in the game.
