I never bothered using my sidearm for damaging because I preferred fighting with my main weapon, so I didn't level magic up until I had like 80k sitting in my bone bank after doing the Orrery. For the longest time I was able to on repeat store 9999 Bones. This feature gets taken away when you max your 3rd and final skill, for some reason. Instead of just providing me the screen to store 9999 bones which they previously let me do indefinitely. That and the tower climb sections being ass are my chief complaints on the game.
