That's what the majority of people want to see. D-List bottom of the barrel Nintendo characters from games no one plays or even knows about. How exciting. Why the fuck would anyone want shit like Crash Bandicoot, Kratos, Master Chief, or Sub-Zero when they can have Sukapon and Lip. That's totally not objectively stupid at all. Why the hell did they even bother adding Sonic and Snake in Brawl? It should have been characters from my favorite Japanese only Famicom games no one cares about or has ever played!

I'm not gonna pretend like there aren't a few I'd still like to see, but the next Smash game needs to introduce something more radical for me to want to buy a whole new game. If it's just going to be the 3rd game in a row that feels exactly the same to play but with a new batch of characters, then just release Ultimate Switch 2 edition with more rounds of DLC. The series is stale.

They have a formula where the core gameplay is what makes these games fun to play. That's why other companies keep making clones that never live up to the standard that Smash has set. If they radically alter the core gameplay and introduce something that could potentially ruin the game, why bother? The only thing they need to do is have a proper story mode that enhances the current gameplay and makes use of the more platforming aspects. Something similar to Melee's Adventure mode but much bigger. Subspace was okay not perfect. It needed to pull from actual game worlds.

The only difference is trophies took up more time and resources that could have went into the development of actual characters like what they did with Ultimate. This is the core issue that I just mentioned previously. It needs a proper story mode. Bring back Break the targets (with custom maps that fans can create for specific characters) as well as maybe bring back Board the Platforms and then you got a perfect Smash game.

Something like that is all that I mean, I'm not saying they need to reinvent the whole game from the ground up. But it needs SOMETHING to justify a new game price tag, otherwise why not just release Ultimate Switch 2 edition and another round of DLC? Which I would be fine with if all they are going to do is introduce a handful of new characters, stages and music tracks. That's just not that exciting anymore. At this point I'd even be more excited to see old characters get revamps than a lot of potential newcomers. The OGs and big Nintendo characters are starting to feel pretty neglected. I know it would piss a lot of people off who are committed to their mains, but the series needs to decide if it wants to cater solely to people who play it like a competitive fighting game and want everything to stay the same forever, or the broader audience who want a party game and a celebration of Nintendo's core franchises. That's been the tension present in the series since Melee and I feel like it's going to get worse the more they keep releasing games that just feel like small iterations on the same thing. Again, I'm not asking that they change the core formula, but they have to do something with it if they want me to spend $90 and not feel like I'm just getting what could have just been another DLC pack.

honest question who is left for first party that would be a genuinely exciting addition at this point i'd think another punch-out fighter like mr. sandman or bald bull might be cool but I doubt many other people would want that

Event matches, break the targets, story campaign, etc etc.More characters is not the answer, you can't compete with Ultimate for sheer spectacle. If they keep pushing for quantity smash will end up like Fortnite with hundreds of low-quality, marketable crossovers. I'm sure they'd make some money off kids who want to see if IShowSpeed has a stronger final smash than Tung Tung Tung Sahur but that's not going to be a good game.
