2013 Lara worked because she was just some girl who found herself in a fucked situation and gradually awakened her latent Croft bloodline badassery, by the end of the game she was fucking shit up with no remorse. Then the later reboot games felt the need to revert her personality and resolve for every new entry so they all felt the same and it didn't work anymore.
