Post a vidya image that feels like adventure
Looking back SMW's biomes really lack variety. There's not even a snow land, it's pretty much just plains, forest and desert. And caves, a shitload of those
>>740015224>it's pretty much just plains, forest and desertYou don't need anything else
>>740015224It was rushed on account of being available on the SNES release date. Super Mario Land 2 is when they had the time to be more imaginative.
>>740014845Wow hard to believe this is smw, looksed like dragons quest or smth from the thumbnail.
>>740014845Overworlds in platformers are cool
Just beat this again, a few minutes ago. Warms my heart every time.
>>740016773Awesome image. From Ghouls n Ghosts btw, if anyone is wondering

>>740015224The desert was chocolate thoughlbeit
>>740017027Almost every fucking image in that design document screams "adventure".
>>740017027The underworld looks so fucking cool but all you get to see are dungeons and a village that looks perfectly normal.
>>740017319
>>740017027I couldn't get into it, familiarity breeding contempt after Illusion of Gaia. The music is flawless needless to say.
>>740017495What? Yes it's part of the same saga by the same dudes, starting with Soulblazer

>>740021140>>740021296Composition in the second one misses the soul of Isono's art. The people and the sword are focused and centered, while Isono would always focus and center on nature. It's crazy how SE just can't capture soul no matter how hard they try.
>>740021140SoM was the first jrpg I played on my UNC's SNES. It always gives me the strongest feelings I can't put in to words. Kino throughout.
>>740023392People like you are why everyone just uses AI slop now.
>>740023590Yet SE didn't us AI slop there, retard. It would probably have done a better job.
>>740023141One of the great unsung minerzumas
>>740024754Way to miss the forest for the trees.
>>740022904I personally didn't like this zone, but at least it's better than the rayquaza tower.
>>740025214kek, kind of like that SE imitation artist
>>740024876I thought they were called dizzygalious?Yeah, Sir Fred is pretty neat. Pity it barely left Spain.
>>740015224It's meant to portray a consistent region, not a theme park. You don't complain about the lack of a snow world in Sunshine.
>>740022904was about to post the same
>>740015224There's an ice cave level if I remember correctlyIdk, I think even if the theming isn't that varied, the level design is, there isn't a single bad level in this game

>>740015224>he actually wants snow cancerthank you for finding a reason for me to like SMW even more than I already do
>>740030615That first guild expedition was a fun and spooky experience. Going through multiple dungeons without being allowed to return to shops or replenish resources. Steam cave music was god tier
>>740032465>Steam cave music was god tierFully agree, Upper Steam Cave is the first 10/10 dungeon theme in the game.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7ekvLh3i1khttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zCLu42C9e0And then at the end of the expedition it plays one of the best songs in the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afo8lPbvobc combined with this really pretty visual of the lake spouting. Extremely kino.

>>740021140Genuinely lost technology
>>740035172>you don't need a theme park where every single element gets its own little environmentWell shit, I already invested millions of dollars into Periodic Table Land, now what am I gonna do?
>>740022904>>740027074I'm not sure what it is but RSE felt the most immersive to me, funny to see this here since I was writing a blogpost about this, there's something about those games in specific that really does make the player feel like they are on a real adventure, I played all of the games up to X/Y, a little bit of SV and none of them made me feel the way RSE did. This is going to sound gay but the intro gives me chills every time, same with the Abandoned Ship / Faraway Island theme. If someone says "nostalgia glasses" that won't work, I'm a 97' zoomzoom and experienced a lot of the games in my youth.
>>740035392Enrich Uraniumland to defend your parcels
>>740035420>there's something about those games in specific that really does make the player feel like they are on a real adventureIt's probably because Hoenn feels more like untamed wilderness than other regions like Kanto, or Johto, or Unova.
>>740035420>the intro gives me chills every timeHey man thats kinda gay
I don't care if everyone else hates them, I really like the water routes especially the strech between route 104 and Dewford
>>740036345everything about Hoenn is good
>>740036908>>740035420How do you feel about Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire?
>>740037019NTA, but I was a fan of it.It's different and I prefer RSE but it's a fun alternative.
>>740037019inferior to og in basically everything, with free Latios midgame, dumbed down areas and mechanics, ruined aesthetic of some places like Mauville, Sky Pillar and Abandoned Ship, and of couse "the battle frontier project has started" and other removed Emerald features. Good things are online, dexnav, soaring (it should have been a recurrent feature but with all flying mon) and some flavor events like actually fighting Deoxys in space instead of receiving it from postman like they are doing now.
>>740037753>ruined aesthetic of some placesTrue, but I did like sea mauville. Also the Deoxys fight was based
>>740027935One of the most unforgettable moments in gaming. The setting, the music, the story. This is when Chrono Trigger went from a great JRPG to one of the GOAT.
>>740017495>>740029914Fucking filtered, Illusion of Gaia is great
>>740037753I hate how Gen 3 Hoenn was a giant seamless map that rat at 60 fps, been playing Fire Red this week after 20 years or so (On my modded 3DS) and then booting up my HGSS copy gave me an insane whiplash, Gen IV runs like ASS and so does every Gen. after 3.Hoenn remakes aren't THAT bad but good fucking god, I dropped a playtrough last month because I could not bear with the speed of that shit, I picked up Emerald yesterday and man... it's amazing.
>>740035420Hoenn is a backwater shithole compared to other regions. There's only like 2 major city hubs and a bunch of towns sprinkled throughout. The rest is pure, undiluted adventure: from the routes to the Regi enigmas.
>>740027136Ohohoho..
>>740038290
>>740022904Whenever I see this section mentioned I get a giant urge to play this shit, anyone recomends those third party retro consoles that can emulate this? Is there a good one with a fair price (less than 100)? Ideally I'd love a modded GBA SP but that PLUS the flascart is insanely expensive (I still have my Emerald copy, btw).
>>740038347
>>740038308I meant to say, I hate how it is amazing to play gen 3 and any other shit afterwards is a slowfest with piss poor frame-rate and performance.
>>740036345those pacifidlog routes are the big mistake. early game water routes are in line with kanto-cinnabar sizes. gym7&8 area is cool and feels like an expansive ocean. Everything beyond that is where the "drag" sensation hits the hardest. Should've taken the sevii-approach and actually added some useful mini-isles to break up the monotony if they wanted extra water.

>>740029949by the way, the city with an untraslated name is Oaxaca.
>>740024595The PMD world maps were always really cool to me
>>740039335>no stupid """""rival""""""" npcs that heal your teamAgree, fuck THAT shit, it's the best of all worlds, not exactly an "open world area" but open enough to reward exploration, the secret areas, bases, the Feebas mystery, a gym, then weather starts to clear out and you arrive at the real open ocean of the first time in your adventure, nowadays in the series items like potions and that shit is irrelevant if you're healed all the time.
>>740041163Zooming out the entire map of BotW is mind-blowing... Then Totk ruined it by putting a lot of pointless rocks in the Sky and barren underworld.
The Map!
>>740041163BOTW is the only game that feels big, like it would actually be a long trek to cross the world over multiple biomes and multiple kingdoms. Skyrim feels like a playground in comparison. But at the same time they made it reasonable interesting to traverse with the glider so it's a total slog.
>>740041791Wizards and Warriors?
>>740042837For me it's the complete opposite, BOTW feels tiny like a theme park, everything is conveniently 10 minutes away and cold mountains neighbor arid deserts, in something like Skyrim you know you're in just one cold region of the world and the continent sprawls out with its own biomes
>>740042920W&W 2, Ironsword
>>740043053>cold mountains neighbor arid desertsjust like in real life
>>740043109I will forever think of that level as "the one with the crying baby song" thanks to some kid I haven't seen in 30 some odd years.
>>740043143There's no place in the world where a snow covered mountain range is a 10min walk away from a scorching desert
>>740014845>Somehow has way more biodiversity
>>740043293Obviously not in 10 mins, but mountains, where snowpeaks are extremely common, are one of the better understood creators of deserts.
>>740017207OoT is one of my favourite games of all time but I feel that the map really sells the world short. It is very literal rather than artistic, I think they wanted this to be used practically by the player but I doubt any did.The map of Termina in MM is a bit better at giving the impression of scale.
>>740043482That's a week's walk anon, and that's a snowy mountaintop and not a range
>>740043053>cold mountains neighbor arid desertsHURR GOBI DESERT WUT DAT?
>>740043293at video game scale sure there is. Hyrule isn't literally the size of Europe.
>>740043608It's still a biome right next to a vastly different biome. Lets go to a different continent, and observe the same thing.I'm not the initial anon, so I'm not making that argument. I'm just pointing out that it isn't some shit that only happens in video games.
>>740043482better examples are Afghanistan and India/the Himalayas
>>740017534Complete and total antisemitism..cant believe we used to let them get away with thatOy Vey
>>740043794>>740043715Watch this nigger argue the Gobi doesn't count because it's not a hot desert because he thinks arid means hot.
>>740043715I don't think so>>740043739>at video game scale That's my point, it's obviously video gamey and not large at all, Skyrim does feel large because it's just one region whereas BOTW crams tiny theme park versions of biomes into a small space and feels obviously fake >>740043794And I'm pointing out there's more than a 10min walk between those
>>740043924So your entire argument is that you're a pedantic autist. Understood.
>>740044145So your entire argument is that it feels big if you pretend it feels big and ignore the way it actually feels
>>740044235You've got me confused for one of the other people who have been embarrassing you. So not even close.
>>740021423i love BIG walls
>>740041791this game was rad to kid me, and I have no perspective on if it was actually any good.
>>740043924idk man, I played dozens of hours before I even found the jungle area and I just couldn't believe there was still so much area ti explore still. At that point I hadn't gone to the mountains either although I knew they were there obviously.
>>740044663This is a Yes! album cover from the 70's.
>>740044816Actually forgot I was supposed to be posting vidya locations, and was just posting artwork that fit the vibe.
>>740036345Hoenn's water routes themselves aren't a problem (actually they're quite well designed with lots of cool optional stuff). The problem is the lack of pokemon variety
I wish Japan would do western fantasy again without it being anime.t. anime fan
>>740015224Desert and snow being right next to each other is why NSMB and its sequels feel so soulless. Dinosaur Land is based off of the Bermudas and is meant to have a tropical climate.

>>740069681Dragon Age Origins for example is a mid RPG when it comes to the genre as a whole but the fact it lets you interact with the characters, see things and settlements change, have your companions react to your decisions, see how factions act based on your choices etc the integration of the world with the gameplay makes its promise of adventure actually hit compared to MMOs or souls games where the worldbuilding is just an arbitrary backdrop that doesn't tie into the gameplay at allWhen I hear about Orlais in DA:O it makes me imagine what sort of culture they have, what sort of characters I would meet, how the region influenced the Orlesian companion you can recruit, even though it's just another region in the lore that's not reachable or directly relevant in DA:O, I was excited for a future game in Orlais before the series got fucked beyond recognitionMeanwhile reading the flavor text and seeing lore in MMOs and souls games comes across as arbitrary dressing when the actual point is the numbers and how they interact with the bosses, it's like getting invested in a card game's flavor text when the lore literally never comes into relevance during actual play, this is visible in how they don't care about reusing bosses in the same game or in multiplayer games like Nightreign The worst thing about souls games lore is that we know for a fact From doesn't care either, they're churning the games out and coming up with whatever just to justify the action, but they don't care about contradictions, lack of clarity, the direction of the universes, etc they know fans will read into things on their own so they don't need to worry too much, for example with the computer generated lyrics in ER that people were convinced had meaning but were just more random dressing to From

>>740076448I get what you mean, but it's just a different kind of adventure and I don't think those are requirements for having an interesting or memorable journey. Half the games ITT would probably fail to fulfill your criteria, but are still considered adventure games.Changeable locations are featured in multiple from games, but even leaving them out, there is plenty of environmental storytelling that does affect gameplay directly and more importantly environmental hazards that challenge you to interact with them in different ways. It could be some kind of environmental pressure, be it being shot at, fire, poison etc., or just enemy placement in tight corridors, which gives people the option to approach situations differently, thanks to the many tools the game provides you with. These hazards could tie into lore elements, be relevant to world building or points of importance. The biggest difference is that the games aren't "story" games in the sense that you get everything presented in a neatly orderly manner, as well as the post apocalyptic isolationism, and that you basically have to play the role of an archeologist, but there are more than enough juicy bits in there to get people invested. Trying to tie events of the past together, makes me wonder about the different cultures, characters and motivations, as well as their interactions and eventually leads to the player closing a chapter on the history of the world."Flavor texts", many of which you can find in "throwaway" locations, and NPC dialogues play a vital part in this and give depth to the individual areas and bigger picture. Admittedly, some of these are more fleshed out or interesting than others, but to downplay everything as MMO like and pretending they're just rolling with random concepts is ignorant.
>>7400170277th post best post. Exquisite penultimate game. Granstream Saga just couldn't hit the same height.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSwNryI7Az0

>>740053197that music is burned into my memory. Also the gambling game music with the little skull falling into the goblets.
You faintly hear the beckoning of quests and maguffins...
I think Earthbound has a real good sense of adventure that Mother 3 lacks.Earthbound felt like a Jojo part 3 travel across the world in a very good way. Not a lot of games really capture that kind of specific feeling which sucks.

The GOAT
>>740089036I know what you mean, but honestly going back through part 3 again, it's one of the weakest parts. I'd use something like Helck here because of the sense of wonder in the journey, and the little moments in the journey dont "feel" disconnected from the main travel. I know that the stories through part 3 are connected of course, but it's about the feeling of continuity.I loved all 3 mother games but earthbound really did feel like packing up your favorite stuff in a backpack and heading out to see what's next, and the ending sequence walking homie is the absolute best way to cap it all off.

>>740036345The problem isn't the water, but the random encounters. The game gets really annoying when you're trying to get somewhere but the battles, that you'll just run away from, keep getting in the way.
>>740089559I never played runescape is there any good tips to start? I can’t be bothered to learn a whole MMO again even though it looks fineAlso do I need to subscribe or is f2p fine?
>>740092024Looks fun*
>>740092025Problem I have with some of the 'build your own map' games is you never know where the center-point or corner of the map is until you've laid most of it out to determine where the far walls are, at which point, you hope your grid paper is wider/taller than the game's map if you started in a shit spot and don't want to retrace it onto another page.
>>740063968aha I see. Point well made
>>740092489some games, like the wizardry series, had a way of learning you current coords (DUMAPIC spell)otherwise yeah, it was either redrawing or taping a new sheet to the edge of the previous one
I NEED more games with colourful world maps, stage select screens and overworlds with locations and landmarks exaggerated in size and style

>>740092024Do all the f2p quests to see if you like the game first. Members has like 100 times more content but if you don't enjoy the loop in f2p it doesn't really change.
>>740076448If we ever enter a cultural Bright Age I think this series might actually get a reboot some day. Yeah it was mid but clearly what it was aiming for did stick with people.
