Why did Valve have to boost their prices so much when other companies like Nintendo are only hiking prices by $50? I’m guessing it has something to do with Valve having a less established shipping and manufacturing pipeline, but even then it seems steep, even compared to Sony’s price increases
Gabe wanted to throw nin-toddlers a bone so they could catch a W for once.
>>740034902this stuff is built in asia. Valve just doesn't want to take risk and order large volumes even though they sell out every time at high prices.
>>740034902Nintendo and Sony have had established manufacturers for decades. Valve doesn't have anything of the sort, they literally put a public notice out with the delay saying "if anyone wants to sell us bulk ram get in contact"
>>740034902Nintendo's hardware was really overpriced before and they just saw an opportunity to get some goodwill by having it slightly less overpriced (but still increase the price).
>>740034902Gaben needs a new yacht and Valvefags will be funding it
>>740035739It’s actually a good thing that they increased the prices
>>740034902Because Valve doesn’t have a competitor. The Steam Deck is the only handheld that’s fully and 100% compatible with the PC Master Race Movement. The movement has two central tenants: (1) your system MUST be a “PC” (unrestricted software install), and (2) your system MUST support Gabe Newell (the founder of our movement) as much as possible. It’s widely agreed by us that all games on Steam are free, hence in order to support Gabe Newell, we must buy the hardware in lieu of software. Plus, the Switch 2 was convicted of having zero (0) games, hence it’s like comparing a PC to a Kindle, which actually has more games than the Switch (according to us).
Even with almost being $1k, if my steam deck suddenly broke, I think I'd rather buy a new one than buy a switch 2. It has actual games
Holy fucking Israel, what a price hike. I thought Snoy won the tiny hat award for raising the price of the No Gaems Pro to $1k, but the 1TB is even worse.
>>740035903>Because Valve doesn’t have a competitor For the Steam Deck specifically, they do. It’s called Nintendo, and Nintendo is raping Valve
>>740035903Damn, I feel a sudden urge to never buy a single game from Steam ever again.
This place is becoming more and more insufferable every day
>>740036091
>>740034902Economy of scale, you dumb asshole. Valve is a tiny player in the hardware market. Nintendo also has a sweetheart deal with Nvidia because they saved the Tegra X1 from being a complete disaster.
>>740036194Yeah even the valve cultists put Nintendo fanboys to shame with their devotion
>>740035880>picfirst twitter nigger is right, except instead of bots it's poo niggers from mumbai that work for Babel Media
nintendo writes up manufacturing contracts with a set or slightly adjustable price for their entire expected lifespan of the console. prices go up when they have to manufacture more than expected to meet demand while simultaneously cost of goods has risen. valve is not primarily a hardware manufacturer and therefore does not function this way, each manufacturing run is negotiated separately, and so they are much more vulnerable to price swings. this would also mean they would have an easier time of giving discounts if prices for the raw materials dropped, but lmao
>>740034902I do think that selling the machine at a steeper loss would have netted them more people in the steame ecosystem in the long run. That was the idea with the 360 and it worked great for that generation.
This is like if Nintendo doubled the price of Switch 2 lmao
>>740036442everyone buying it is already in the ecosystem, they are not adding to their userbase with the hardware
>>740036535I know a couple people who had no PC for gaming and got steam decks, I think it could have been an entry point for a lot of console gamers. Now they will be able to utilize their hardware manufacturing deals to out price the GabeCube and stop that from happening
>>740036535So they failed right? I thought Steam Deck was supposed to have mass appeal for people that were wary of PC gaming. Looks like only Gabe cultists bought it
>>740036673no, the point was not to bring in poors, it was to give pcgods another toy
>>740036718You sound like a fag.
>>740036862you sound like a poor
>>740034902The switch was already severely overpriced and the deck was severely under-priced so when they normalised the deck jumped like crazy.
>>740034902Because other companies are selling old hardware and they are selling them at a loss because their main income is selling the games on that hardware, not the hardware itself.
Nintendo won HUGELY
Stop being poor.
>>740035903Funny how the narrative changed.
>>740035903but it have linux os
>>740036968Switch 2 is way more powerful and has more advanced tech like detachable joycons, mouse joycons, 120 FPS, and HD rumble 2.
>>740037016You're doing propaganda for a megacorp for free.Success or failure comes from understanding what people would want and markerting it well enough. If there was such thing as a "zero sum game", apple would have raped nintendo out of existence long ago.
>>740037076this, gabe needs a better yacht
>>740037298I don’t like Nincels but Valve cultists are somehow more deranged desu

>>740036894nah he sound like poor fag, kek
>>740037512You’re insane if you think a $300 price increase on 6 year old hardware is defensible, especially after you guys shat on Sony and Nintendo’s price increases

>>740037940you're still responding to me which means you're thinking about me while you try to game, very homosexual
>>740034902if they sold it for cheaper the scalpers would just pocket the difference. it makes sense to go high and take the money themselves instead of giving lots of free money to scalpers
>>740037996Says the troonime watcher
>>740037967>$3k because it only comes bundles with $800 glassesEh, no thanks. Might as well get the new claw instead.
>>740038058brother play your game that is so good, why are you still jerking off to me, it's gross
>>740034902Valve clearly didn't stockpile like consoles would have. They ran out and got slammed by the full current price of components. They also didn't have anything else to offset the price, like consoles are prices across the board not just on the system itself. Consoles will keep raising prices, they can just do it slower.
>>740038121Why are you so obsessed with gay sex? Is it because all of that tranime you watched made you think you’re a woman?
>>740038161>like consoles are prices*raising prices
>>740038161nobody stockpiles, they just sign longterm contracts with fixed prices. valve probably did that with the original steam controller and whatnot and got burrned, though
>>740038240>nobody stockpiles, they just sign longterm contracts with fixed pricesThat is more or less what I meant, but thanks for the correction.
>>740034902Nintendo want to lock you into their walled garden and milk you with all the ways Valve cant.Paid online, licensed peripherals, games that never go on sale.Paid online alone will stack up to over $200 over the whole console generation.Steam Deck doesnt really do that. While it technically gives access to the steam store its not the main way to interact with it. The absolute majority of Steam Deck owners already have a regular PC to buy steam games.Nintendo are in a better position to eat console manufacturing costs than Valve.
>>740036279>Valve is a tiny player in the hardware marketBut this is by choice. Everybody knows what valve is and demand is always way greater than supply even when prices are stupid. Instead of being sold out the vast majority of the time why don't they pay for more production.
>>740038381the answer to this is pretty self-evident if you can place yourself in the mindset you would have had prior to the actual release of the steam deck originally. like, maybe valve becomes a real hardware player moving forward, but nobody actually expected the deck would be capable of doing that for them. and honestly, it's still probably not feasible, the deck is not selling switch levels, come on
>>740034902Sony and Nintendo run a monopoly with the chinks
>>740034902They don't sell it worldwide. When you buy things in bulk you get a discount, Valve's order probably isn't big enough.
>>740035469>>740038381Scrapers grabbing it are not considered sold. Get your facts straight.
>>740038363>>740038363>Paid onlineYou forgot to mention access to exclusive games like Tetris and F-Zero 99, a massive catalogue of Nintendo’s greatest hits, free DLC, and more for an extremely low price compared to Xbox and Sony>Licensed peripherals Oh you mean like the Steam controller? You can buy third party controllers for Switch 2 dude>games that never go on saleLuckily for us, Nintendo systems have something PC cultists will never have: physical games. Physical games can be sold at many retailers and they compete amongst themselves all the time with deep discounts and sales. Valve cultists are completely unaware of gaming outside of Steam.
>>740038691sad
>>740034902It's called loss leading. Selling consoles sells games, which have way higher profit margins. Valve's hardware doesn't sell games, most people who buy these would be buying their games on PC anyway so loss leading is just loss in this case
>>740035638Build a better Switch 2 for cheaper. I'll wait.
>>740038691>we don't get good sales but at least i can hike down to gamestop to buy someone's sloppy secondsuh, ok
>>740038645scalpers being able to buy the tiny supply means the supply is tiny dipshit. What is this supposed to refute? What is your point?
>valve have some goodwill and momentum>immediately stomp all over it with shekel fever you hate to see it
>>740038792*that still cost more than games on sale on steam
>>740036673Why would consolefags not just buy a switch?
>>740037115>why didn’t handheld PC manufacturers predict the entire computer industry getting buttfucked???You know damn well when that article was written the price of the switch 2 was outrageous.
>>740034902Gotta pay for those yachts, anon. And all the food for gabe's fatass
>>740034902>>740035880>selling product at a lossSelling product that 99% of customers will play games they buy on your platform which will generate a significant profit.
>>740038980sure, but then you're spending all your dev time pennypinching to try and minimize your losses. i am totally fine with paying market price to get a better quality product, i do not need to scrimp and save to afford my toys
>>740037298You are running damage control for a $300 price hike for free. Valvefags are really something else
>>740038867It was never outragous to begin with you gigantic giga faggot. All the people screeching drop the price mysteriously vanished once shit started to go up in price for everyone else and the console is still selling at a record pace, but please, keep telling us how poor you actually are, because you can't simply pirate Switch 2 games yet you God damned retard.
>>740038980It's a PC. There is no guarantee anyone will buy games off Steam after getting one.
>>740038530You can increase production after you realize you aren't meeting demand. They've had years to do so. No I don't expect valve to make the best selling hardware of a generation but this half a million production run shit is cringe. But then again if they listened to my advice but didn't secure ram contracts for cheap, making a lot of $1000+ shit nobody wants would end valve hardware. But it looks like it's over anyway.
>>740039232You people can’t be serious. They can’t guarantee that the vast majority of customers won’t buy games from the most popular online PC gaming store that’s prebuilt into the system? Okay
>>740035964This, but just because I am never going back to a locked down system. It's so restrictive and full of anti-consumer bullshit, I just can't, it would piss me off.
>>740039314yes, that is the case. half of my games on my deck are pirated, and i am not afraid to buy games
>>740039173>It was never outragous to begin withwrong.
>>740036091If you actually wanted to compare Valve and Nintendo as a whole, Valve is crushing it and consistently breaking their records while Nintendo's stock is cratering. Valve is much, much better positioned for the long term.
>>740039351People from brown countries like Brazil are irrelevant, everyone knows you’re thieves. People in America don’t pirate >>740039457Switch 2 is the fastest selling console in the history of gaming. All of Valve’s growth is in China and India where they buy extremely cheap roguelites for their toasters. CCP is going to release an official gaming client and ban valve btw
>>740039173>It was never outragous to begin withFuck off fanboy shill, you're an embarrassment.
>>740039232the deck is way less vulnerable to this than the machine which would be bought in hordes for offices if it was only $500.I always thought they should subsidize these consoles by giving you the difference in steam wallet. Say the steam machine is $1000 or over, they could give you a few hundred dollars in steam wallet. That builds libraries and starts usage for new customers. Valve gets 30% of that back. And you effectively get the steam machine for 500-800 dollars if you intend to use it for games anyway. If you bought it as a non gaming PC you paid the non subsidized price. It's also way less attractive for scalpers because the steam wallet money could only be valid for the account that purchased the machine. Anyway thanks for reading my idea that will never happen. It'll be $1200 or more and implode
>>740039587You will never have an yatch with this attitude.Gaben is literally the only person on the planet that sell games, a LOT of games to Brazil.
>>740038691Dude, have some shame.
>>740039587The Switch 2 fucking sucks and Nintendo's failure to do anything good with it will catch up with them one day. Advertising with no goodwill can't keep them afloat forever.
>>740039705LMAO I was right, you’re a turd skin>>740039718Says the guy defending $300 price hikes
steam deck was always gimmicky slop for retards anyway
it's due to economy of scale. nintendo orders tens of millions of units which lets them get a better deal.
>>740039314Considering ukrainians were just using decks to kill russians, yeah, that's the case. When compute has gotten this expensive, people will take whatever pc they can get at a good price.
>>740039773Switch 2 is great and you only have this attitude because you will never ever play Switch 2 exclusives. How’s that emulator coming along?
>>740039821I'm not him, but you're correct, i am indeed a Brazilian, and what i see here, is gaben selling a shitload of games.Your retarded all or nothing mentality leads you you to be yachtless, while gaben has a shitload of em.
>>740039921I have no interest in any Switch 2 exclusive.I lost interest in Nintendo first parties when it became clear they were going to beat all of them repeatedly with the Breath of the Wild stick during development.
In addition to what the other users have already explained, there's also the fact that the Steam Deck has nearly twice as much RAM and twice as much storage space, two components whose prices have been rising steadily lately. So it's to be expected that the impact per unit will be greater.Furthermore, Nintendo is selling a handheld with the screen shown in pic related, so it's kinda understandable how they've managed to keep the price at $500 for now, but if things continue this way, it's quite possible that Nintendo will have to raise the price again soon.
>>740039679Oh I agree, valve should have done something differently here since it impedes their real goals of pushing linux and handheld pc gaming. They're not after profit on the hardware so they should have thought of a better plan than just tank and pass on the cost. But I do think people are getting so desperate for cheap computers that even the deck would be at risk of that if the value proposition incentivized it buying it for that.
>>740039848
>>740034902MFW I bought a 1 TB OLED last year for $650
>>740034902Nintendo controls a completely closed market. Whenever you buy a Switch game, Nintendo takes a cut. You can't play games on a Switch that haven't been approved by Nintendo and you can't buy a game without giving a slice of the price to Nintendo. They use this to subsidize their rather low hardware prices. The Steam Deck on the other hand is an open platform. On the surface it might seem like a console because it comes preloaded with SteamOS and wants you to log into Steam, but you can actually do whatever the fuck you want with the hardware. You don't need to hack or jailbreak it, you just do whatever the fuck you want. That means they can't rely on squeezing a commission out of every game played on the Deck, because there's nothing stopping you from just buying one and then using it to play games from GOG, EGS or even pirated games. And because of that the system itself has to be profitable, because Valve can't rely on the Steam cut subsidizing hardware that's sold at cost price or at a loss.

>>740040329>to take away my games remotelyHow can they take away my physical collection? Unlike Steamies we own games that aren’t tied to a digital account
>>740040189Not to mention Nintendo can also just raise prices on everything else to offset the cost of the main system, which they did. Consoles will keep ting price hies, just more slowly.
>>740040219No one is "winning", console wars are a farce. You from the first world should have enough brain power to understand that. The only period where it was anything was during the 80's when nintend could force companies to not publish to other platforms. After that, if you con console fail, it's your fault.

>>740034902I assume they have multiple RAM providers. The expensive RAM goes into the Steam Decks while they reserved the cheap RAM for the Steam Machines. We'll just have to wait for the price reveal to see if this is true.
>>740040761>okay so they COULD decide to steal my games from me even though I "physically" own them but why WOULD they?Because they want you to buy the sequel. Duh. Next question.
>>740040781You’re out of your mind if you think the steam box will cost anything less than $1200. >>740041302The PS5 benefits from Sony's existing manufacturing connections and from an economy of scale. The Steam Box is basically made from consumer parts at consumer prices because valve doesn't have manufacturing connections older than most of its employees, and is thus overall more expensive. It's like how a car might be worth more than the raw material it's made of, but a hobbyist would spend far more on working the material into the shape of the car than the actual manufacturer charged for the market version.
>>740041308personally, i think most video game companies just sell luxury goods for a profit, and valve's strategy in this instance involved gambling that the cost of goods would go down when it didn't
>>740040781Anon we're living in a time where Samsung's memory department refuses to sell memory to Samsung's mobile department because they can make more money elsewhere, and you think Valve has multiple providers for memory?
>>740041565they also just negotiated their manufacturing contract at a worse time than sony through poor luck. the ps5 would probably either be over $1k or not have as much ram as it does if they'd been working out the details in 2026
>>740041061Corpos have absolute control over your consoles. They can do whatever the hell they want and they say as much knowing people won't read it anyway.
Why is there even a console war between the Deck and S2? The Deck is sold out, has been sold out like 99% of the time since February, and will probably be unavailable Intermittently for the foreseeable future. The restocks are miniscule, last for like 1 hour, and the price doesn't make it worth buying even if you had the chance to. Why bother shilling for an unobtainable product? Not like the anons here will be able to buy it.
>>740034902Valve doesnt give a shit about the hardware they don't give a shit about anything in one month CS2 Keys generate more revenue than all the steam decks combined. all they are trying to do is to get more people to use steam. They don't do any work they outsource everything to someone else for a fee and if something goes wrong its not them its that other dude/company
>>740041739Because people talking about the Steam Deck aren't inherently shilling. They don't want you to buy it. They just hear Nintendo fans spouting lunatic shit and feel the need to correct that.

>>740041616I admit it's cope.
>>740039253You fucking retard. There is literally nothing stopping you from using a steam deck for military purposes and people have done that. You can use the device for whatever the fuck you want and corporations and militaries have infinitely more money than steam customers which means that unless Draconian vetting is done to prevent sales to non gamers somehow (anyone can get a steam account), the whole supply will go to exactly militaries and corporations because the device is undercutting the entire market for small computers with decent performance.Customer micromanagement isn't a viable strategy unless you're targeting low hanging fruit like scalpers who have very little resources to circumvent even the most basic of measures. Also nothing stops you from pirating games or buying from gog or egs either. Not that this is as much of a concern.
>>740041739The deck upset nintendo fanboys from it's very inception and they immediately tried to get threads about it kicked to /g/. Fanboys are obsessed, hypocritical autists and they are desperate for a win here, even though it doesn't benefit them whatsoever and is simply a very worrying trend in the industry that's hitting everyone.
>>740034902The Steam OLED's price was set three years ago. The actual cost of manufacturing the 1TB version has gone up by $300 in that time. Valve is not large enough nor do they have the money to be a loss leader like Nintendo, Microsoft, or Sony.
>>740042370by all accounts nintendo doesn't use the loss leader strategy, their conservative business model just paid off better this time

>>740042229You got it backwards, retard. Deckies were talking so much fucking shit about the deck when it was announced. Dozens of threads about the supposed "Switch killer". Only for it to shitted and flop against the Switch and Deckies have been coping ever since. The price hike was simply the final nail in the coffin
>>740042704>Nintendo defender>"Deckies">Nintendo WONNED and that is what matters!
>>740038812You don’t have sales records, get better conspiracy theories and go back to /x/
>>740042229>The deck upset nintendo fanboys from it's very inceptionCould it be that every time someone on this stupid board tried to make a thread about the Switch or Switch 2 it was followed by drooling retards like yourself spamming 'just get a deck lmao'?Nah, couldn't be.Eat shit faggot.
>>740041061>Do you even know how physical works?Every Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 game has its own unique identifier, and Nintendo has the technology to block any of these games if it chooses to.In fact, it already does this. Someone in Russia has made a series of dumps available to users of the MIG Switch. There was a well-known folder where people would download the game and play it for free on the Switch. Nintendo identified every license of each of those games, and not only revoked their licenses, but instructed every Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 on the planet to be remotely banned if they run any of those games (even if you happen to find the original cartridge with the official game inside).
>>740042994tell that to the anon I replied to, its his idea
I thought Valve, the most pro-consumer company ever, cared about poor people
>>740042704You haven't a shred of self-awareness.
>>740043030Because you guys didn't already ruin the board with your incessant console warring and famitsu threads? I still remember you poor schmucks trying to argue that Metroid Prime 4 was a masterpiece and that only snoys would hate it.
>>740043373not enough to sell a product at a 30% loss
>>740043030Right, because you people are always the victim, never perpetrators. Everyone else just doesn't understand, Nintendo fanboys have to be in here flinging their shit around because they're just poor, innocent victims.
>>740034902Nintendo are selling hardware at a loss hoping to recoup the losses with software sales. They can afford to do this because the Switch 2 is projected to sell like 20 mil within this year alone.Valve knows that the Steamdeck is niche (it has sold like what, 4 mil total so far?) so they cannot afford to not sell it at a profit. Now I don't know how much money CSGO cases make compared to Nintendos entire Switch library but probably less, despite the cattle.
There’s nothing wrong with charging $1000 for the steam deck even doe the switch 2 is more powerful and has more impressive hardware features. Here’s why:-Valve is the most pro consumer company -Gaben needs another yacht -I just really hecking love Steam and I treat valve like I would a family member
>Nintendo and Sony, Tendies and Snoys, come together to shit on ValvejeetsNever thought I'd see the day...
>>740043518Valve is probably more profitable than Nintendo and Sony (Games division) combined actually. There was a leak somewhere that said Valve makes $1.5 billion from lootboxes a year. This isn't even accounting for Valve taking a 40% cut off of each sale on Steam either. GabeN needs a second a megayacht.
>>740043537When you're at the top, everyone is jealous of you.
>>740043408>famitsu out of nowherekek
>>740043632>Valve is probably more profitable than Nintendo and Sony (Games division) combined actually. Anon, Nintendo makes 1.5 billion off of pokemon ALONE, MONTHLY.
>>740043534there's nothing morally wrong with selling a product for a profit. it was a strategic mistake to get themselves into a position where they had to do a $300 price hike, but it's silly when shitposters paint that as some kind of ethical breach
>>740043673>tendies making falseflag threads to play the victimNow that's sad.
>>740041739Insecurity and inferiority complex, but they must defend their tribe to the death, even when their leader couldn't care less about them.
>>740043654Nintendo is at the top in first world countries like America. Steam is at the top in shitholes like China where they only play roguelites that run on toasters
>>740043693>Nintendo makes 1.5 billion off of pokemon ALONE, MONTHLY.I don't believe that.
>>740043673It's funny how mad it makes some people a thread about simple facts.Did they found them annoying during thw wiiu era too, I wonder?
>>740043632Nintendo makes 2.5 - 3 billion USD profit annually, Valve like 2 billion. But Valve has a fraction of the staff, so technically they're a much more profitable business.
>>740043752>b-but tendies are the ones behind all this!KEK cry harder
>>740043707>tried to get console gamers into the Steam ecosystem and compete with Nintendo by selling a relatively inexpensive PC handheld >the only people that buy it are dedicated cultists that already own a gaming PC, they barely use the deck and sell it on ebay >Valve forced to change their entire business model around the system and only target cultists now Kek. How is this not a complete failure on Valve’s end? Their entire strategy fell apart
>>740043779perhaps he meant in yen
>>740043883i feel like you didn't actually read my post and are just using some kind of copypasta to reply to me
>>740043761>first world countries like america
>>740042704I remember the constant attempts to weaponize jannies and get threads banned to /g/ began when people were just curious and excited about how it could work with linux.
>>740035473>if anyone wants to sell us bulk ram get in contact
>>740043893no, he meant revenue, not profit
If you have the kind of money to buy a bunch of yacht...
>>740043883>>Valve forced to change their entire business modelWhat percentage of Valve's overall revenue do you think the Steam Deck makes up? Just curious.
>>740044073that's only $2.5b/year in revenue, so he'd still be pretty wrong
>>740043373Nintendo offers demos, Steam doesn’t. You are in a cult.
>>740044182i play demos on steam thobeit
>>740044224No anon, AAA does not count and neither does indie devs who never finished their games.
>>740044135A lot less than it should be. Sadly they failed
>>740044327oh ok
>>740044182Retard you have a 2 hour demo on every game you buy on steam
>>740044182Did you get those names backwards?
Valves finally going mask off and revealing how greedy they are
>>740034902Nintendo and Sony have closed ecosystems and need you to buy their hardware in order to give them money. This means they are more willing to absorb losses to get you into the ecosystem than valve who really doesn't give a shit if you buy a steam machine or not.
>>740044587Exactly. Valve doesn’t care about selling steam machines. They’re just doing it to give back to us, the players. I will gladly give Valve $1200 for the new Steam machine because it’s basically a charity for us hardcore fans. Thank you, valve.
>>740043673>Because you guys didn't already ruin the board with your incessant console warring and famitsu threads?>>740043487>Right, because you people are always the victim, never perpetrators>B-b-but you did it!Actually kill yourselves faggots, you guys have been doing this for much longer and were worse or do we also need to go over the several threads that was nothing but anal vore? I don't even have a leg in this race but you shitlords love saying "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TENDIES!?"Fuck both of you.
>>740044661I don't think it's charity but it's definitely more of a side project. If the Steam Machine fails who cares, people will still buy Steam games on Pc. If the Switch 2 fails Nintendo dies.
>>740043881Yeah I'm sure this is their usual M.O and not just you faggots doing what you do best because you don't know anything else.
>>740043632Valve takes a 20-30% cut. Nintendo and sony take a flat 30%. Valve is very profitable, but not as profitable as those two (but the are getting there). Where they excel in profitability is per employee. Valve only has 350 employees vs nintendo's 18,000+ and sony's 112,000+, making valve one of, if not the most profitable company on the planet per employee.
>>740044805>If the Steam Machine fails who caresIt basically exposes valve as an incompetent company that can’t really do anything other than be a parasitical middle man taking a 30% cut from people that actually make things
>>740036091Nintendo doesn't compete with Valve, Nintendo will be competing with Sony next year with the PS6 Canis. Handheld consoles were always going to outsell this thing, don't know why retards thought handheld PCs were going to kill console handhelds, lmao. They made the handheld PC market a joke with that one.
>>740044805i do kind of wonder what the mission statement is for the steam machine. is it just more buildout of the SteamOS environment?
>>740044734>the snoys were mean to us!>that means we get to shitpost for years too!Absolutely pathetic.
>>740044936yeah, but a cool parasite, like the cordyceps fungus
>>740034902Because nintendo bought and sold a lot they will get special enterprise discounts. This goes for everything from businesses having priority cheaper cloud services compared to the average shitter to AI costs to hardware deals to government handouts.
>>740044967I like how PCvegans act like they’re so above it all and past console tribalism meanwhile they’re all throughout this board defending $300 price increases
>>740044734Poor innocent tendie has the right to shit himself and throw it everywhere because those heckin' evil snoys were mean to him a decade ago. I get it, you all have to be the new obnoxious, asinine snoys and shit up the board into perpetuity because you're owed reparations for your victimhood and you all had never engaged in consolewar shitposting until that slight.
>>740044957>SteamOS environmentThis is the part I'm more interested in. Not because I want to use SteamOS itself but I want to see how far Valve can push PC gaming towards Linux.
>>740044587I'm going to serious with you, right now. I really don't understand why Microsoft and Valve got involved with making consoles/console-like hardware. This is Nintendo's and Sony's market, Microsoft only hurt the console market, and Valve sucks at hardware given the prices.
>>740044957I think there were two goals for the steam machine1. Introduce a standard set of system requirements for developers to shoot for.2. Compete with Xbox and Playstation (this became economically unviable after AI broke the market).
>>740044734>buh muh snoysYou're in a steam thread, asshole.
>>740044939>don't know why retards thought handheld PCs were going to kill console handhelds, lmao.Blame that on every news site regurgitating the same story to each other so it spread like wildfire.Actually a lot of shit happens that way to be honest.
>>740045035Whatever happened to price increases being good, because they filtered the poorfags? You tendies AND snoys got behind game prices going up to 70,80, even 100 dollars. AND when pressed about the cost of online increasing, your only retort was "get a job, brownoid".I guess that stopped being convenient for you.
>>740045273Microsoft got into the console market because they believed Sony's lies about the PS2 replacing the home computer.
>>740044967>>740045182>>740045182>Provide evidence>N-no, U!Keep sucking those dick faggots, make it squeaky clean.I'm sure all the shitposting and defending of your faggot behaviour will have your overlords notice you one day.
Yachts are expensive.
>>740043537It says a lot about how much of a threat PC has become to consoles.
>>740045532>were to consolesFixed.
>>740045569Are. Steam keeps breaking records regardless of component prices.
They don’t have the same economies of scale.
>>740045182The really sad and funny thing is these fucking guys will turn right around and shit all over the Wii U themselves just like the snoys they hate so much, in order to defend the Switch and modern Nintendo. They have no dignity or principles, they were born to bootlick current behavior at all costs, no matter how hard Nintendo screws them or engages in evil behavior. That's why they need to see others stumble, so they can pretend it somehow invalidates or justifies Nintendo's fuckups.
>>740045364Competition != Kill
>>740046152Not him, but handheld PCs aren't competition to Nintendo, only Sony can bring real competition in the handheld space to Nintendo.
>>740046315Regular PCs are no threat to Nintendo either.
>>740034902Don't worry Steam Decks will be 90% off in the Summer sale.
>>740046381That is not true. PC could absolutely kill off the console model and an easy way for it to do that is by consoles simply becoming PCs with their own frontend. The console model is inherently flawed, limiting and risky, it has to sell as many millions of consoles every generation or it tanks its whole economy and every game on it. Xbox is basucally dead, Sony had to kill their handheld line and hasn't gotten anywhere close to ps2 numbers again, and Nintendo had to kill their home console line and hasn't gotten close to their wii/ds era numbers.By becoming PCs they eliminate a huge amount of risk, but they also lose control, so they're not going to do that until they have to. But if they have to, they will.
>>740046152Well obviously but don't tell the 'journalists' this as they tend not to say it's competition and will say it's going to take "the lion's share of handhald gaming from Nintendo".
>>740046762>hasn't gotten close to their wii/ds era numbers.Yeah, about that....
>>740046762>Nintendo had to kill their home console line and hasn't gotten close to their wii/ds era numbers.Did you just ignore the Switch 1 in its entirety?
>>740046858>>740046924Wii/ds era sold 100 million more hardware units than the switch and 500,000 more units of software.
>>740046762Stop it, with the Steam Deck's price hitting around $800-$1000 and the Steam Machine most likely costing $1200-$1500, gaming PCs costing $1000+, console gaming has no real competition except with itself. Nintendo will be competing with Sony next year as Sony releases their native handheld to go against the Switch 2. PC gaming is its own thing, it's not going to shake up the console market anytime soon. exclusive wars between Nintendo and Sony are also back.
>>740046950Oh you mean combined.
>>740046953If you don't think more price hikes are going to hit consoles I've got a bridge to sell you. And when they have to renew their contracts for components, what do you think is going to happen?Consoles are not insulated from what's happening to PC, they are even more at risk than PC is.
>>740047048So Nintendo ponies up the dough, sells the Switch at a loss and makes up for it with Pokemon. Same as they always have.
>>740047045When Nintendo used to have two hardware lines, which could serve as a safety net for each other if one failed like the Wii U, yeah. I'm counting everything in an era.
>>740047048The next price hike is hitting Xbox again because they haven't raised it from the RAM and SSD shortages yet. Nintendo and Sony are pretty much done with the price hiking. Sony, in particular, is following a Nintendo strategy somewhat with PS6 home console and handheld to keep the prices down and affordable.
They want to burn through their existing stock and try to gauge how much people will pay because the steam machine is clearly going to be 1.5x the cost of a deck, maybe even more.
>>740047083If Nintendo wants to take hundreds of dollars in losses on each unit sold, maybe, but I doubt it. Especially not with their current software sales. If things keep going this way, it's hardware that's going to crack first. Right now even PC itself is a distant afterthought to the likes of Nvidia, AMD, Micron, etc. Consoles are just pure wasted compute and completely worthless to them, but they're tied up in old contracts. When those contracts expire, and if AI hasn't gone away by that point, it will be ugly.
>>740047359When you own the most successful media franchise on Earth you can afford to splurge on other things. >Especially not with their current software sales. You mean the record breaking sales of Pokopia?
>>740046953>>740047083Are you guys actually stupid? Do you realise that Trump used all the US government funds to give the AI companies trillions of USD to buy out SSD storage and RAM indefinitely? Trump is owned by all the businesses. All the businesses don't want to pay workers. Even if the token cost for AI is increased by 10x it won't match the cost of 1 worker. So all the businesses are pouring money into the AI companies, not just the dumbass tech bros, investors and the US government.Nintendo and Sony obviously can't pay as much as open AI and anthropic which have trillions of dollars in funding and defence contracts behind them. Furthermore, gaming is a luxury cost so consumers won't pay that much either if the economy gets worse. All the gaming companies will be squeezed and won't be able to compete for projects. Also, imagine how much more money gaming companies will be able to squeeze out, if instead of being able to buy hardware you were forced to buy a cloud subscription to play games that can increase price constantly and also you wouldn't be able to pirate the game because all your screen is capable of doing is showing the game you are playing but all the game is actually in the cloud and you won't own hardware because you can't beat the companies that are receiving trillions from the government.
>>740047262>Nintendo and Sony are pretty much done with the price hikingNo they aren't. They do have more leeway in how to implement those price hikes though, like nintendo raising the price of games, peripherals and the switch 1, or sony raising the price of online.
>>740047426>Trump used all the US government funds to give the AI companies trillions of USDwtf are you talking about
>>740047262>Nintendo and Sony are pretty much done with the price hiking. What? No lmao, unless the AI bubble pops, it's only going to get worse for EVERYONE, not just Nintendo and Sony. You need to stop being an optimist, the writing is on the wall right now.
>>740047412>>When you own the most successful media franchise on Earth you can afford to splurge on other things. That's why they're going into movies, theme parks, and more merch, it's an attempt at a safety net.
>>740047602Its not like they need them. Pokemon is doing fine on its own. Every new game breaks a new record.
>>740047602>That's why they're going into movies, theme parks, and more merch, it's an attempt at a safety net.I wish people saw this instead of saying 'Nintendo should only stick to videogames, they lost their soul trying to branch out'. Yes this was actually said multiple times in and out of this board.Branching out was the only way they could cover their ass if something went sideways, especially when their competitors were using videogames to branch out themselves.
>>740047602Because they realized they could, not because they need to.
>>740047665>Every new game breaks a new record. The games don't even make up the majority of their money, it's all the merchandise.
>>740047426>Also, imagine how much more money gaming companies will be able to squeeze out, if instead of being able to buy hardware you were forced to buy a cloud subscription to play gamesI agree with most of your post, and that corporations like Nintendo would love to do this if thy could get away with it, but the current climate doesn't allow this either. That's still using a huge amount of compute that would be better served going towards data centers. Nintendo would have to make an enormous upfront investment and rollout and pray that their consumers won't reject it. They would sooner create their own super locked down launcher on PC than risk that.
>>740047426>politics againShut up, handheld PCs only sold around 6 million units, Switch 1 and Switch 2 completely eclipsed that. AMD knows Sony will sell over 10 million PS6 handhelds, meanwhile, they have no trust in Valve or other handheld PC makers to make custom 15-watt chips for them. Nintendo already knows they can keep the Switch 2 at $500 when they increase the price to that in September. Sony, going by rumors, are confident they can match the Switch 2's upcoming price with the PS6 handheld and release the PS6 between $700-$800 and keep it there. Stop pushing PC problems on consoles.

Winning contracts is how companies win money from the government. >Further, given that it is projected that worldwide AI spending will grow from $1.75 trillion in 2025 to $2.52 trillion in 2026 (a 44% year-over-year growth)https://www.brookings.edu/articles/where-does-federal-ai-spending-stand-in-2026/
>>740047048>they are even more at risk than PC isI'm curious how you came to this conclusion. The future price hikes and contracts you brought up will also affect the manufacturers making PC components.
>>740047776It's stupid not to. A console is a single point of failure that could crater everything they do otherwise.>but they have money they could just tank it for however many years and just pray that it doesn't happen to their next consoleNot how public corporations or investors work, they would get eaten alive.
>>740047770The same people saying that are aware nintendo started as a weird anything company that became a toy company. A minority of their existence has been video games.
>>740048004Like Nintendo ever gave a fuck about their investors or shareholders.
>>740047465True, they'll keep doing that.>>740047574Nintendo and Sony will just spread out the price hiking to other sectors to keep the same prices for their next gen hardware.
>>740047985>The future price hikes and contracts you brought up will also affect the manufacturers making PC components.Obviously. But computers aren't just for playing video games. They're incredibly useful and because they're useful they can also play video games. There is a much higher need and demand for computers than consoles.
>>740047985what anon likely means is businesses always need laptops or remoting into cloud for workers and are willing to pay exorbitant prices to keep operating, but the consumer market will be eaten alive.
man it feels goodto not care about these shitty products
>>740048056Yes, they absolutely do. That's why they raised the price in Japan when investors were complaining about it. If they didn't care about investors, they wouldn't be public. Thinking otherwise is just not how corporations work.
>>740040895jeez, gta6 will easily make that list, they'll be 2,3 and 4. And i can't imagine anything else coming close.
>>740048056the only reason why they looked like they didn't care is because they have been doing good and looked like a safe and reliable investment. if the market turns in the opposite direction the investors will jump down their throats.
>>740047952The only one I see there that is taxpayer money is the contracts. Btw the government contracts things they want from the private sector because this isn't communism and the government generally doesn't own anything but bureaucrats so they can't actually make anything. If the us government had factories and more data centers like the NSA your head would be exploding about skynet. The government has use for AI like anyone else. All I care about is whether or not the trump admin also cut enough ribbons to balance investment in hardware production which is where the problem really lies. There's not enough happening on the supply side. I've also only heard anthropic recently became profitable and everyone else is in the hole. We could find out AI is like rocketry where you have to have government contracts for your datacenters to be profitable. That would explode the bubble.
>>740047952>Stargate Project, etcYou realize these are deals between corporations, right? It's not public funding.
>>740048259It became a common narrative because one retarded investor's frustrations got memed during the iwata era, but even iwata cared about investors, or rather the investor's money. And of course, this is ignoring iwata is dead and got replaced by an accountant. Money is nintendo's priority and investors simply have a lot of it. It's why you suddenly see suspicious changes whenever blackrock is an investor.
>>740048362if they could actually fund hardware production that would ease the supply problem. the problem? no one wants factories in their country because it causes all sorts of major environment concerns. so it's better for most people that it exists somewhere offshore with weaker environmental laws. also, e-waste itself is toxic and is also unrecyclable. You don't want to touch that shit and also you don't want to be involved in making it. Most western countries have been using third world countries as dumping ground for the trash. to build factories in western countries, they will need to erode the health and safety protections in those countries. I also have concerns about the AI bubble because right now a lot of companies are forcing people to burn through tokens, what I mean is that companies have introduced AI mandates where you have to do all your work end to end with AI to 'boost productivity'. So even though a person would usually use AI to a normal degree that suits their work, companies are hellbent on forcing people to use it as much as possible which can artificially inflate the use of AI and as a result all workers have to use it or they can no longer meet their KPIs. This is "spec driven development" where the idea is instead of developers or product people doing their work, end to end the AI designs it, implements it etc and the human just watches the work output and signs off on it or modifies it.
>>740034902i honestly think it's a trial balloon for the cube
>>740049397Could be. If people buy it, valve prices the gabecube around $1000. If people don't, valve takes the hit and prices it lower.
>>740034902Nintendo and Sony have special inside deals with manufacturers which is how they get proprietary components for their consoles. The Steam Deck is in essence, a portable PC running Linux and as such is heavily impacted by the current RAM crisis moreso than either of them.
>>740034902the point of their product line is to provide a way for their steam market investor class to cash out their skins/hats/etc without capital flight to third-party sites and without opening Valve up to further gambling lawsuits.they will continue to raise prices on hardware until their resellers are satisfied.
>>740034902Valve had no stock in storage and they are small time. They don't want to subsidize it anymore.
>Why did Valve have to boost their pricesbecause they sell it for profit, while xbox, ps, and nintendo sell at loss
>>740038691>Valve cultists are completely unaware of gaming outside of Steam. What the fuck...
>>740034902Excuse me anon but a thread being critical of /v/alve illegal here
>>740050968This
>>740051816>because they sell it for profit, while xbox sell at lossNot for long
>>740050968>>740051980And valve has a billionaire Ceo and is a private company not beholden to share holders. They also make a billion and one dollars in profits monthly.Gaben himself could have subsidize a 500 dollar reduction in price of ANYTHING they fucking sale for hundreds of years and he'd still be able to buy another yacht. Meanwhile iwata cut his own pay. Nintendo gave a 4 month notice valve gave ZERO. what's the next excuse? They don't hire business majors to run their shit? Get the fuck outta here with that. Same with the 100 dollar steam controller. Valve could have easily shown the cost of materials to its customers and shown yeah we're doing what we can. Those niggas didn't even say sorry I the announcement lmao. This whole gaben worship is getting fucking old.
>>740052196The Steam controller's price was (and I shit you not) set because "We wanted to reflect the quality and expertise of our engineering team and what they put into it"What the fuck does that even mean? Valve literally thinks they're fucking Apple.
>>740052196Shut the fuck up and fund Gabe's yacht, steammutt.
>>740052196I wasn't defending Valve or anything, the company is clearly greedy and incompetent with hardware. I can see console gaming growing in the future.
>>740035903Based and correct.
>>740052350so it'd be ok for apple to say that? fucking lol
