I think the problem is that the term jrpg exists in the first place because it basically presumes any game in that style has to be from the same country, and clearly it doesnt. So clearly the solution is that we need a better term to differentiate between western "style" rpgs and japanese "style" rpgs.

Nothing wrong with emulating the originals, but 2 in most older formats is absolutely bullshit hard to the point of the devs admitting it wasn't playtested after a certain point. Remakes rework a lot of how the first game works, and adds a fourth party member with her own mechanics in the second. I'd say spend the money if you think you'll like them but for 1&2 a comparison to the originals is a bit tougher.
