I still can't get over how ugly the artstyle is and how poor the readability/depth perception with it is.

Even 10 hours in, it's by far the worst aspect of the game. It's not just ugly, it's really garish and hard to read.

Also the balancing is pretty poor (first dungeon by far the hardest), and humanoid bosses that deal contact damage and just fly around the screen have to be the laziest type of boss fight.

Overall though, solid 6-7/10. With a better and more readable artstyle could easily be an 8.5/10

Depends on how much you love whip.
I think most new attacks are unexciting or gimmicky compared to the base kit, but whip and shield are the two exceptions that get a buff to the base kit.

The whip tipper is stupidly precise and not reliable in my experience though, especially if used while jumping.

Like third overall or third of the six tower bosses?

Cause I fought the Brain third after the Duchess and Swampgator, I didn't find it that bad the lasers are annoying although it's good to know that you can dive through the ring attacks to make them disappear much like the ring dive minigame in the same area (or was it in Sandfalls, I just remember encountering it on my way to this boss). I found the train conductor boss way more annoying cause they're constantly airborne.

I get the feeling that Carving Man (or whatever he's called) will be a lot easier than I probably expect given I've put him off to at least fifth, got no idea what the Astral boss is going to be, I did delve into that dungeon a bit but was getting annoyed with the bottom-right area so I left. Also does anyone know how to get into the top-right sub-area for that dungeon, I've beaten the Gravity portion and visited the Cogworks and Mutant portions but I got no idea how I'm supposed to get to whatever the top-left one is.

Just learn to ride a bike anon (I forgot how much the bonestone was worth so you might be right). At least you can hit the sign to easily replenish your bike.

I think the only bullshit part of this is the second jump over the last chasm, the one that's closest to the sewer line where the bonestone follows cause there's a gap between it and the wall that I fell through several times.

Assuming they made DLC for this akin to the Plague Knight, Spectre Knight & King Knight stuff from SK what do you think said DLC would be?

I feel the most obvious would be a Thorne mode that'd probably act like Meta Knight modes in the Kirby games (i.e. largely a time trial and limited to Thorne's moveset rather than having access to the augmentations of Mina's trinkets and other weapons, probably wouldn't have vial recovery but rather just have to find consumable health akin to the Red Fish from the main game). Would probably be the exact same story except from Thorne's perspective similar to how Plague Knight's mode was, probably swap out the three Thorne battles with fights with Mina (Manor fight is the Swords, Snow fight is the Hammer, Town fight is the Whip).

I dunno which other characters would work for a DLC unless they wanted to continue the story beyond the initial ending or do a prequel story.
>>
>>740047629
>Depends on how much you love whip

Fun game but I really hate how 80% of your moveset is locked behind spending meter, and you can only equip a few at a time. Devs need to just give me a big DMC style moveset at all times and balance the game around that.

I feel like whatever the first tower you do first is going to be the hardest unless you go out of your way to ignore levelling up, Mina just ends up becoming tanky enough to handle most of what the game can throw at you.

>>
>>740049284

Oh yeah i assume hes the final boss or close. But was thinking like a early version that starts the whole quest.
>>
>>740049406
If you got the wall burrow trinket, you can do it but it's a massive pain in the ass (also the wall burrow is competely useless for the rest of the game). Or you can spring heel+parasol/drilldiver.
>>
Okay yeah, that was an awkwardly precise jump. I didn't even know you could jump 2 spaces when coming off of a wall.
>>
>>740049481
Oh I see what you mean yeah I wasn't thinking about the two-tile gap to that left platform. Hmm I don't really know desu, maybe if you have that life ring trinket as well (the one that saves you from a pitfall once). That probably isn't the intended solution but I can't think of anything else unless you're just expected to perfectly air dash (with the sidearm you mentioned) out of a Wall cling.

you can skip so many platforming challenges with a well placed wall burrow

It's very weird that the atmosphere of the game is clearly going for a gothic-victorian theme but seems to largely avoid a lot of what Castlevania uses for the same theme. I think the only major overlaps would be the Frankenstein elements (which are much more present in this game than Castlevania usually goes for) and the Mercreatures.

I could at least understand if the justification was that everyone in Ossex was a walking time bomb because of Spark exposure and any of them could turn into a hulking monster to just completely fuck up the city at any moment and Lionel's research in the Astral Orrery was looking for a way to remove the Spark from a person and the Plasma Vials were the stop-gap measure in the meantime with the reason for needing to reactivate the towers themselves being that without them the Orrery would run out of electricityand be unable to contain its test subjects and continue functioning.

But that is absolutely not present in the story at all and tmk the Orrery strictly exists so Lionel can pump out more abominations onto the Isles for reasons? Also I'm assuming the tower bosses are a result of Spark corruption, that almost certainly seems to be the case for the Duchess, Mined Mind, Locomotress & Congealed but I would've thought it much more fitting if they actually showed the corrupt effecting characters we were at least introduced to prior like Deluxy (Also I know Deluxy is encountered at the tower but Carving Man is the tower boss for Septemburg).

Also fuck's up with Frozen Horror, felt like the most random fucking boss in the game, you just show up, beat the crap out of the guy and then he dies. Was there any explanation to this guy or was it just a boss YC had to put somewhere and thought Coltrane needed another mid-boss after Thorne 2?

more specifically (since my dumb ass forgot to mention) you start in Backwaters, grab the ladder and take it down to the train station and go south from there. You use it to get up to the ledge and that's the path to getting back to the ship and grabbing the two red chests on it.

I'm not saying he should be a twist villain, I'm saying I would've liked to have seen him have some sort of justification for why he wants to continue using the Spark Generators and is messing around with spark mutations.

no I completely agree, I'm just left confused by the existing writing. SK actually did an untwist villain with King Knight where it set him up perfectly to become king and he just turns evil anyways because he's retarded but there it was actually well done. Here it's just strange

I know it won't happen because the game is a soft bomb or whatever but a prequel campaign that in any fucking way explains lionel's deal would be cool

Agreed, I think it'd also be a good way to show what the Duchess, Nox's Beast and Locomotress were like before they became guardians (I mean the squid creature that inhabits the Duchess' armor). Same could probably go for Carving Man and how the Crow Town fell to infighting (I'd really like to see some sort of Crow Bishop boss fight, given the crucifixions we see in the main story).

Also I dunno if we ever got clarification on the Kraken from the intro, was that just Lionel in his monster form or something else?

When Mina accuses him of knowingly letting the Spark mutate people he says they serve well as guards.
Naturally a man who has everything would also want to know how to best protect his interests. I'm sure his ability to be empowered rather than corrupted by the Spark is a byproduct of the research he's funding.

I can't fathom any reason really.
It beats all the other melee weapons by a mile.
I guess the gun does something that the hammer doesn't but that's it.
Daggers and whip both suck compared to the hammer.
Hell, the hammers followup attack is on par with whip reach but wider and with knock back.
The charge smash hits airborne enemies.l but has AoE.
The dps outdoes dagger by a ton too.

I feel like they over designed the hammer in comparison to the other melee weapons.
Still having fun bonking everything.
>>
Is there any way to NOT throw the shield if I'm just trying to repeatedly use the base attack to reset the shield after each hit? It was my old spam2win strategy and while I'm not against using the weapon as intended (parry machine) I do sometimes throw it when I don't mean to.

Yeah, but it doesn't put the shield away between each use so you can only tank one missed parry before it breaks. If you repeatedly press the button, you take a slight hit to your attack speed but in exchange the shield basically never breaks.
>>
>>740055470
You go under glass and roll where the bone is to the left and across the gap. Mina will jump when she emerges and you will land on that glass platform on the left.

>>
I really need to learn how to dodge, I am getting my ass handed to me by early game enemies. Those guard enemies particularly.
>>
>>740056042
The wall burrow in particular feels like it was once a more developed feature. I'm guessing after playing around with some challenge areas they decided it just wasn't much fun, and tossed it in as a filler trinket.
Every movement item has like one dedicated spot where its clearly meant to be used and then never again.
>>
>>740047756
>running through an area where faster weapons already oneshot enemies
>any situation where multiple fast attacks works better than one big attack
>anywhere that being able to guard or parry hits with the shield is beneficial
>stacking Chain Capacitor and on-hit proc trinkets

Realistically, almost never. It's supposed to be the awkward-but-rewarding weapon, but if you don't find it awkward then buster being broken is the only real reason to switch off it.

I don't really use either of its upgrades, though the melee charge gives you way more ammo than a normal swing. The bullets are just super good considering they have 8-way aim with ricochets, a fast rate of fire, and doublehit point blank. It's either a low risk high reward or a moderate risk massive reward weapon depending on playstyle.

Actually kind of really love the combat. But I hate how running into enemies does damage. Now for some, if not a lot, it makes sense. But for *every* single enemy, its getting annoying and making me want to not fight most and just run past everything. This wouldnt be nearly as much of an issue if enemies also had to deal with obstacles but 99% of them so far can just ignore them completely. Ignore fire, ignore water, ignore spikes, ignore other enemies. Dude no dark souls is like this where most enemies can just ignore the environment and act like a fucking ghost running through everything. There's not even a modifier to change that.

Why is every dev obsessed with the "estus flask" type heal? It's honestly such bad fucking game design it's unreal. Especially in a game like this that just doesn't need it at all. I'd rather have the Zelda-like healing of heart pick ups as random drops.

Being forced to stand completely still while you waste your time drinking isn't fun, it isn't challenging, it isn't interesting, it's just boring time wasting bullshit. It isn't unique and adds no depth to the gameplay. Especially when your enemies can and do always keep moving, keep attacking. Good luck if you're fighting 2-3+ enemies at the same time you will NEVER find enough time inbetween moves/attacks to heal.

Like, who actually enjoys this? I genuinely ask? It sucks so fucking bad. I'm enjoying the game otherwise but god damn, the healing is ass

Is it though? I have always disliked it, from Monster Hunter to Dark Souls and anything else. It just isn't fun to take away control from me while the enemy gets to do anything they want and hit me again. At best you learn the patterns and get a heal in when you know you can (eg: enemy is doing a long move); at worst you're just standing around waiting to heal (or even worse, fully run away to heal on a different screen/etc). It doesn't incentivize gameplay, it incentivizes doing nothing. Or, the incentive is to "get good" and not take any damage at all; which is fine too I guess but really just shows how bad the healing is too. If it's better and easier to not get hit at all than to heal yourself, why even have healing at all?

>adds no depth to the gameplay.
You're just kind of wrong about this one. If healing was instantaneous it would just amount to remembering to press the button that makes you not die every once in a while.
Healing taking a moment and leaving you vulnerable means that you need to be specifically looking for openings that you can safely heal, whether that's staggering an enemy, dodging behind cover, waiting out an attack chain, or just making enough distance.
It by definition, adds depth and decision-making to the gameplay.
>>
>>740064436
But you get into scenarios often where there isn't really a time to heal at all because you MUST stand still for X time to heal. Which means that your best bets are to: not heal at all and try to win the fight that way; or to run away to give yourself enough time to heal. Both of which make healing the lesser option. You're either good enough to not use it at all, or you're purposefully ignoring the game to do something as simple as heal. Old Zelda games did it well with the hearts, you could find them in rooms with pots and enemies if you needed them as you took damage, or it forced you to fight/die without them. Though they tend to become too easy when you have lots of hearts and damage doesn't mean much.

I'd rather have 1 heal that I can use near-instant than 4 useless heals that stunlock me and make the game more boring. Monster Hunter arguably does it better too since you can get the + versions of your heals. Your armor/etc will give you the defense you need to take hits and not heal inbetween because you're not getting 50% of your life taken off. Then when the monster runs away or you need to run, you heal up and get back to it.

Mina has screens that are too small for you to really move around, or lock you off from running away. If you heal in combat the enemies will always keep moving toward you and attacking. Honestly, you're not convincing me it's a better system. It just sucks.
>>
>>740064221
I think devs forget WHY the Estus was made in the first place. It was created to solve a problem. Back in Demon's Souls it fucking sucked farming healing items of the different grades you might want. So in Dark Souls they fix it by giving you a set amount of heals. But then the damage wasn't so obscene that you'd have to heal on the weakest hit from a boss.

At this point just give me the most amount of health you're comfortable giving with no healing because literally every dev has lost the plot.

Also, thinking about it, the game should just have the BloodBorne style of rally heal. If you take a hit, you've got a set amount to recover and can recover by attacking. Which the game already sort of has, but you're still forced to stand and heal. It's the worst of all worlds.

I think having that kind of tension and difficult decision-making in the middle of battle is more interesting than not having it.
>Honestly, you're not convincing me it's a better system.
Not trying to, just seeing how much obtuse bullshit you're willing to hyuck up.
>>
I do think the healing time without the trinket is way too punishing. The other anon's right, a lot of the places you fight are too claustrophobic to reliably get a heal in, and with the way the hitboxes work you can think you're safe but still get hit because the floating bullet with a shadow 2 blocks in front of you is actually grounded so touching it means you get hit.
>>
>>740065358
It really seems like they don't want you to heal in combat without the trinkets. So I stopped doing that and only doing it when it was 100% safe.
>>
>>740065060
>having that kind of tension and difficult decision-making in the middle of battle is more interesting than not having it
But that's the entire thing: that doesn't really happen. Your only decision making is "do I run and heal" or "do I not heal at all". Yes, I understand you can heal in combat, but it's typically just such a bad option that there is no real reason to do so. You heal when you know you won't be hit, which is the basically the same thing has having an 'instant' heal that keeps you in the fight. It's 2-3 seconds of pure non-gameplay. Your enemy is either not moving at all, or doing a move that allows you to heal while you stand around like a retard. If you heal in the middle of combat, you're more than likely going to be hit, so you're never going to actually do that. If your healing, it means you aren't able to be hit for some reason or other. It's just not good gameplay.

This is still more depth than the "I injured. I heal." one track thinking you get from an instantaneous heal.
>>
>>740065358
Rather than the time, it's the boss designs that don't give you room for them.
Every boss can start and finish an attack in the time it takes to use a vial. The best you can do is pick a moment where the odds are in your favour, but 'odds' just means 'if the boss AI is stupid' which doesn't feel satisfying.
Doubly annoying since the "when should I use my heals" question is already more interesting in this game, given you'll often not be at max plasma and have to wonder if you should try to greed it or play it safe. It's interesting enough even when you get clean opportunities to use it, so I don't get why they don't give them.

I generally like its design though. Shouldn't forget that the estus system works really well in a game with difficult enemies you'll see while exploring to the next area, since then it can act as a sort of 'stamina' system where you get worn down if you explore too far without a rest. That part fits Mina well.
>>
>>740065493
Dude just fucking use one of the two trinkets that make healing a complete non-issue. There's one that greatly increases the speed and one that makes it just automatically heal when you have enough. Combined with the Trinket that increases plasma gain and let you store it healing will NEVER be an issue again.
>>
>>740065502
I did get good. I equipped the trinket and played the game as it was intended. By cheezing everything.

It was great game wise. Only major flaw is that the healing system doesn't synergize at all with the platforming.
Story-wise it was pretty mid. The NPCs just aren't that charming or memorable, a lot of them could use more dialogue or an extra step to their quests. Mina doesn't even talk much and comes across as a dumbass for trusting the obviously evil guy. I'm still confused as to why he was even doing anything or why the towers even broke down.
There were a few kino moments, like the tribunal, but overall not as good as Shovel Knight or either of the Hollow Knight.

Or you misread the situation and attempt to heal at a bad time.
Or you're so flustered that you waste an opportunity to heal because you're watching the enemy's movements.
Or you successfully dodge some attacks and spend an opportunity that could've been used to attack to heal instead. Or you don't heal and just keep fighting on low health because you choose to risk it and think you have the enemy figured out now. It adds a lot of variables and choices.

It also happens to Thorne after the sixth tower. I'm kinda surprised there aren't follow up quests for the secret bosses (the one's mentioned in the achievement) where you have to bring each of them to a different tower and get an extra boss fight against them (Dugin at Nox's Bayou, Maxi at the Bone Beach, Evra at the Astral Orrery, probably leave out Armand & Willis since they're probably too large to really work with the level geometry).

Also has anyone done reverse tower order yet (Astral, Coltrane, Bone, Septemburg, Bayou, Crypt)?

Kinda funny cause Septemburg was my last tower (don't ask me why, I was pretty much right up to the boss and just decided to do everything else instead) so Carved Man, Thorne and Deluxy all got turned because ofthe same tower. It is kinda weird in hindsight that none of the other towers were causing spark storms though, I know it probably would've made Coltrane and Orrery's platforming more annoying than they already can be (especially if it electrified the rails on the former) but it is a weird inconsistency. I could understand if maybe the first tower the player visits there's no spark storm just to let the player focus on platforming but like after that all of them should have it.

no, if you talk to them again they tell you that you have to wait a little while until they can give you the trinket. I don't know why it's like that but if you just do some other stuff for a while and come back later it should be there.

Seriously the one time a game could've shown how bullshit supply and demand can get and it doesn't. I get 1000 bones from a jaunty trek through town. Mina should've shaken him down for 50,000 bones.
And if you do, Lionel would've accused you of tax evasion

Nope, the people have been driven to madness and sloth by the towers, the beloved and charitable ruler has been killed by your hand, you were publicly (granted, both fairly and unfairly) painted as a villain, and you completely knocked out the power, the machines, and generally fucked up their way of life.

There's a reason the ending achievement is called hollow victory.

It actually is rather charming, and not in a strictly "gimmicky intro" way since you can actually toggle the console on and play with the game view in it, and can press r3 to view and spin it around.
I picked it up on sale and am having a great time.
>>740075180
Really? I find the game continues to build on the central yoyo tool pretty soundly, and the combat arenas are always fun since they always offer interesting enemy layouts or fun ways to use the yoyo bounces. Everything gets boring with enough time, but I'm about halfway through my playthrough, and I've been fully captivated- mainly because the levels all flow so seamlessly and finding your way through 'overzones' is its own puzzle at first. Pretty great pacing I'd say.
I also think the art fits perfectly for the vibe its going for. I also appreciate the story's premise and the fact its not just generic "the rich are all evil" (mind you, I do generally dislike the untouchable uber wealthy) since you ARE a pipistrello and the tycoons are assholes (as is your aunt) but for their own reasons. Curious to see where that goes.
Also I find it funny in this game you play as a bat anthro and have a mouse rival/villain and in Mina it's the other way around
