or am I playing it wrong/have a suboptimal gameplay loop? every boss despite being slower than most action rpgs I've played, takes me more time to beat and forces me to learn the moveset. It's not like I don't enjoy it, quite the opposite, but I didn't expect it to be more taxing than every fromsoft entry (didn't play ER yet) + Nioh 1/2.
I try to perfect block most of the time and rarely dodge, in order to break poise and maximise DPS. Yes I know how P Organ synergies work. Currently I'm using the first boss sword that scales on STR. Equip load is under 60%. It's not like a specific boss is hard, it's every single one that takes me more than I expect to make it through. I crafted my own build without any guides so it might not be optimal. At King of Puppets right now btw. Please use spoilers for anything past that, but feel free to talk about the gameplay mechanics.

This is your problem.

Lies of P's Perfect Block window is smaller than the smallest Fromsoft Parry window in Sekiro, and spamming it to try and get lucky actually closes the window entirely and just gives you the animation.

In contrast, Lies of P's Dodge is extremely forgiving, as the Iframes, afaik, start inmediately right along with the animation.

This isn't a parry game, it's a dodge game with a really good yet equally risky parry mechanic.

Further information: I started with Development build with coil stick, then I respecced into STR because I wanted to have a big slow weapon for once. I usually choose fast, nimble weapons and rely on dodging with light armor rather than heavy armor block. I figured since the main mechanic of the game is perfect block I'd go for a heavier, tanky build. My capacity is good enough to have the heaviest armor on. Damage feels ok. Thing is, the game is "slower" than most so bossfights take more time per attempt. Of course if you always perfect block them and break their poise every half a minute they can be quick, but it takes a lot to achieve that.
Maybe I'm trying to block too much, but dodge and movement feels so off in this game, so I thought parry was the intended way to play this most of the time.

The bosses in lies of P actually have pretty small health bars, relatively speaking
The posture system makes it very easy to "snowball" once you're adequate at landing attacks consistently, but you do have to be relentless with both landing charged attacks and small hits to make sure it doesn't go down
Also make sure you're not playing into a bosses strength, weaknesses make a significant difference in how long it takes
Having a fable art that lets you force the posture break with hyper armor is good too, avoids the dance of waiting for an opportunity to land a charged heavy

Or dodging something that would otherwise give you a big knockback on parry

The game became easy once I picked a fast weapon and started dodging. Finished the game and dlc with the umbrella you get from the dog trader. It consumes very little stamina and I just spammed attack until the very last moment and then I dodged. Also memorize what type of enemy is weak to what and use your buff that replenishes at bonfires

that's what I want to reserve for last because that's how I play these games normally and I wanted a change, but if nothing works I'll probably do that.

I feel like this game offers you a lot of playstyle flexibility, and for faster light weapons it's probably "empty power cell" builds, they look pretty op on paper. I wanted to lean on a "more power cell" + "missing health recovery" + parry build but it might not be as good. What I'm missing is something to enhance block and parry like the Fuoco ring

King of Puppets is the game's "git gud" boss, or at least it was for me. But yeah the bosses are supposed to be hard. IMO they get easier after King of Puppets but maybe that's just because he forced me to up my game.

Parries help, and you can theoretically win the game just by doing them, but there are some attacks that will knock you back miles if you parry them while giving you multiple opportunities for a charged attack if you dodge them
Don't tunnel vision one option if you feel it's not adequately paying off

Like the others said, use all your defensive options. Perfect guard, regular guard, dodging and running all have their uses. Also, don't hesitate to use your attack items. The shot put is particularly useful.

There are many ways to play lies of p until you reach the final boss of the dlc and then the game invites you to sit on a cuck chair and watch the boss do combos until he literally gets tired of hitting you and then its your turn to do the critical strike and then back to the cuck chair

Still, the feel of beating a boss after learning how to counteract its moves feels so good. Nioh bosses I just DPS rushed and spammed dodge block and even if it was fun I felt like I didn't earn it.

I got curious because I saw a streamer playing like a retard and progressing easily through the game so I rebooted it and started a fresh save. I was appalled at what they did to my boy. The combat system is notorious for two reasons:
>Poor on-boarding in all the mechanics.
>Simple and to a degree vital combat upgrades gated behind Quartz and later NG+ rounds.
I've played through the game a ton of times and my biggest gripe always is that first round. It isn't even about it being challenging, it's that you're gated from a lot of options that make a lot of encounters much more fun like the Perfect Guard Destruction bonus and multiple Legion Arms. Beyond that i think Lies of P is fantastic for what it is, it's just filled with non-sensical stuff. Like who the fuck actually thinks the Gold Coin Tree is fun?

Lies of P reminded me that Souls games could have been so much better mechanically than what they went for with Elden Ring. I did find a weapon I really loved early on and struggled to stick with anything else for long though, unless the boss fight was fast enough to feel like a duel, at which point the rapier came back out. Also the first few sections up until the cathedral felt a bit samey, but after that it really picks up and only really drops back down a bit at the very end.

But it had such a well balanced set of combat systems and none of the bosses ever felt like bullshit to me. I always felt like I had multiple ways to counter boss attacks and that my deaths were usually from impatience. And then knowing there's a parry mechanic that could allow me to do DMC Royal Guard style hitless runs if I take time to master it sick as fuck. Also, idk, I just really loved it's Pinnoccio + alchemy + gnosticism setting.

It's kind of funny nobody talks that Link-Dodge exists too, so for some builds there honestly is barely any reason to do much Perfect Guarding, except in maybe completely obvious cases like Door Guardian or the other bosses and enemies that have ridiculously easy parry windows.

During the duo fight, the color of the string shows which one will be attacking. Try to time a kill on the puppet to happen around 50% health on the main boss. Phase 2 will be delayed until the puppet has healed. A shorter phase 2 will make the fight notably easier.
