Why do System Shock games never sell?
>>740075189>2>less than half a million
>>740075189I thought this series was a classic how did literally no one buy it
>>740075189gameplay and player-agency first crowd actually never shows up to support the games, and then everyone (everyone here means a performative vocal minority online) is mad that games didn't go beyond far cry 2 ubisoft open worlds and cinematic linear walking simulators
>>740076118I liked far cry 2 tho
>>740075189>286,000 dropoff between SS1 and 2 remakesWhat the PHUCK happened? Was the first remake really that bad?
>>740076353it's a good game but after 20 years your average open world barely changed this formula
>>740075189because nobody plays le immersive sims, they just post about them online to look coolname a single genre with a larger percentage of posers
>>740076496Yeah I get you, tho far cry 2 just feel special, I'm kinda shocked ubisoft kinda ignores it
>>7400764822 isn't a remake its a re-release
>>740075189Immersive sim(yeah, yeah, it doesn't exist) was always a thing that didn't sell, but it makes a devoted small community
Terrible marketing
>>740075189uncslop
>>740076353>>740076496>>7400766612 is a mediocre unfinished piece of garbage1 shits all over it
They're not dumb enough. Ken Levine showed how it was done with Bioshock and Bioshock Infinite.
>>740076835you are entitled to your opinion anon, it's ok to be in the wrong, we don't blame you
>>740076835Why would you write a wrong opinion
>>740075189>Had SS remake wishlisted>Publisher stealth doubled the price in my region a month before release.Ok fuck off then. That aside it's a cult classic but never had mass appeal and the SS2 2025 release was not a remake. Modded original achieves the same results.
>>740075189I haven't played any of them because I'm too wussy for the horror themes even if the gameplay is good.
>>740076835Contrarian retard of the year award right here.
>>740075189outdated design
>>740075189Q´Quite frankly I am shocked that 2 ever happened with how fucking bad System Shock 1 is.I recently played it and if 2 turns out equally bad I will forever laugh at retarded PC boomers.
>>740077121lmao
SS1 = Prey > SS2 = BS2 > BS1 >>>>>>>> shit >>>>>>>> BSI
>>740077121BAZINGA BABABABABA
>>740077479Bioshock infinite is so fucking bad
>>740077479Accurate
>>740077121you think that's bad, Resident Evil Puzzles be like:>Press X.>Turn Y.>Solve it by guess work and spam.>There are no clever hints that tell without telling.>Sometimes there are "translation problems" like "Ring all the bells inside the room" (instead of: "Ring all the bells within the vicinity." (Its not clever, its stupid.)Yep.
>>740076905>>740076964>>740077113Xbox 360 Basedlennial faggots like you are 10 times worse than the zoomers you constantly bitch about. No taste and boomer tier narcisism >>740077479>NuPrey >BioshitAll terrible
>>740077880>be likewhy do you type like a niggerand how do you get confused by RE puzzlestwo digits IQ don't reply to me
>>740077950All Far Cry 1-3 games were good, only contrarians try to say 3 wasn't good. It was well received by everyone even boomers at the time. Only Zoomers who weren't conscious back then will try to say just to farm edgy contrarian points. Past 3rd? It got woke.
>>740077950>doubles downanon you can like a game and you don't need to explain your choices to anyone just like other people can like a different game, it's ok to be in the wrongnobody has said anything about millennials or zoomers so making up random imaginary scenarios in your head is kinda pointless
>>740078041Recently replayed 1 and it was really fun
>>740077975I didn't get "confused" by the puzzles, the puzzle were just lost in translation, if the bell is inside the room as stated by the document, it shouldn't be outside the room in the background. Simple logic. X can't be Y. You are the nigger who thinks 2+2=5 because game is good. If the instruction was worded "Shoot from within the room" instead of "Shoot the bells in the room." It would've been a funny wording and a ??? puzzler but approved teaser. "But that bell is not within this room... Its in the backyard..."
>>7400780412 was unfinished boring tripe and 3 was only well received becauseeverything else was a linear on rails shooter.Same thing with Skyrim, these games have aged like shit and Blood Dragon is good because it doesn't pad out the game with useless fetch quest bullshit while embracing the over the top sillyness of these games.>>740078082My issue isn't liking 1, my issue is everyone liking 2 and 3 regardless if they're called FarCry.They're terrible fucking games for completely different reasons, 2 might have been good with one or two more years of development, but 3 is just cookie cutter FPS Assassins Creed.
>>740077950nigger
>>740078559That's Mama Nigger to you Mario!
>>740078768Sorry ma
>>740078178ok philhttps://youtu.be/3ru5gHSWBSA?t=4282
>>740078938Phil would hate it
>>740077950Fuck you
>>740075189Ha fucked
>>740075189It's the same two games again and again and again and again.
>>740075189maybe they're not good games.
>>740075189The original games were PC only titles from the time when piracy was at its highest relative to total PC players. The updates/remakes have mostly the same audience instead of new ones. Also 400k is actually pretty good for relatively low budget titles like these.
>>740084948That 400,000 is over a period of years. On release, SS2 sold fewer than 60,000 copies, it was a flop and contributed to Looking Glass going out of business.
>>740083963They are good games anon
>>740075189Normies are scared of anything on PC made before oblivion. The graphics are too crunchy and the gameplay is too clunkySource: me trying to get my normie friends to play deus ex or ss2Also for SS1 it was 1994 and pc gaming was in its infancy
>>740088419Oof
>>740075189Shodan isn't as sexy as Elizabeth.
>>740088419>pc gaming was in its infancyThat was 1987
>>740075189You posted only 2 games and 3 remakes.Based on the two games it sold pretty good.Though I don't know what would constitue good/bad for 1994 and 1999.Half-Life sold what, a few million in its first year?
>>740075189another massive blow for PC gaming.
>game that was never on consoles until its HD re-release has modest sales numbersI feel like people just really don't wrap their head around how huge the market gap was between consoles/handhelds and PCs, up until the 2010s. Goldeneye 007 was the best selling FPS of the 90s. The best selling game of the 5th generation was Super Mario 64 at 12 million. 4th generation is Super Mario World at 20 million. And that's before we even get into handhelds aka fucking Pokemon.Literally all numbers are going to look bad when your brain is calibrated to consoles.
>>740090351Half life has at least a few million now
>>740075780System Shock 2 is one of those "classics" that few people actually played, but have become a cultural litmus test. Even predating youtube video essays, people would use the game as some sort of measuring stick. The number of people who claim to love it but never actually played it (or at least beat it) is very high.
>Deus Ex's less interesting older brotherSystem Shock is one of those historically relevant franchises that you never really want to play more than once.
>>740090673Makes sense if the sales are so low
>>740091014I've replayed SS2 five times in a row two years ago. But it's very much a "you need to understand how this game works and agree with it or else it's complete garbage" type of game.
>>740091204As in only particular builds are viable?
>>740075385System Shock is another one of those>biggest fan excited to play for the first timeseries. Tonnes of fake fans who never even played the games.
>>740077134System shock 2 is much better then 1. 2 is very similar to deus ex in gameplay execution(but not even close in the story/level design departments)
>>740075385Well, yeah: They wanted like $40-50 for it when the original was (before being pulled) $10 on Steam.
>people unironically attributing worth or merit based on sales numbersIt's so fucking over for /v/.
>>740091243There's a decent variety of good character builds and only some skills (Repair and like half of PSI powers) are practically useless. Though there is an issue that certain skills have redundancy problem if you choose to take both and/or don't hybridize well with certain others. But I was talking more about the general gameplay principles: individual enemies are weak, dumb and take very little skill to defeat, but every combat encounter above Normal difficulty is on average a drain on your fundamentally limited resources so you can't just fuck around at your leisure. So your main enjoyment of the game is from outwitting its economical pressure, not outskilling its obstacles which are somewhere between sorta auto-solved if you have an optimal character build or nigh-insurmountable if you fuck around with that too much and have a bad one.
>>740091812I mean
>>740090351SS2 got mogged by Opposing Force, Quake 3, and Unreal Tournament the year it came out.
>>740092938Sales wise?
>>740075189we live in a tastelet world, anon.
>>740077121kek'd
>>740093234Yes.SS2>only 58,671 copies were sold by April 2000>UT>100,998 copies by the end of 1999,OF>108,008 copies by the end of 1999Q3>222,840 copies and earned revenues of $10.1 million (~$17.4 million in 2024) by early 2000
>>740075385>>740091378>>740091572Retards, the industry was much much smaller back in the day and PC wasn't big as a gaming platform either compared to these days. This is roughly the equivalent of 5 million today
>>740093629Those are lifetime sales for System Shock 2. Opposing Force eventually sold a million retail copies and who knows how many more on Steam. System Shock isn't retard-friendly enough to be popular like Bioshock was.
>>740075189Why would you expect an old game to sell as well as the first time it's sold? Only die hard fans are going to buy it. These types of releases are literally just to milk something for what little is left. Anyone supporting them should be shot.
>>740077121>>740077525lel
>>740093375Oof
>>740075189immersive sims never sell in generalit's one of my favoritie genres and no one cares about them
Hi there, devs and publishers. Today I'll teach you how to make lots of money and sell lots of copies of a vidya.Watch and learn.MAYBE MAKE A NEW ENTRY INSTEAD OF REGURGITATING SOMETHING THAT ALREADY EXISTS AND MAKING IT SHITTIER, YOU FUCKING FAGGOTS. Of course worthless demasters and demakes don't sell well. They shouldn't.
>>740075189Is this true? That's a bummer. I liked the remake.
>>740075189cause games like that require you to figure things out on your own which most modern day gamers hate doing
>>740076118>i didnt buy the game, therefore you didnt
>>740077113it's true though, try playing it
>>740083891how can this be true when there are like maybe 8 games total in the "genre"
>>740094995Prey flopped. Smart games don't sell. You need to make a dumb game that makes retards feel smart to get big numbers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_u18_BKczg
>>740094995Capcom does both :) I fucking hate RE normalfags so much. Literally pokemon tier fanbase that can#t stop gobbeling the slop.
>>740075189>System Shock 1(1994)Was an extremely demanding game for it's time, and you needed a hefty setup to actually play it as intended>System Shock 2It actually sold quiet well, but not well enough for EA's executives>System Shock 1 Enhanced EditionBarely any pre-release marketing, and the re-release was sorely trageting a niche audience>SS1makeThe absurd dev hell killed the expectations of both the kikestarter backers and people that wanted to buy it, surprisingly it did turn out to be a solid offering>System Shock 2 enhanced editionWas a terrible remaster, and there are things that Nightdive is still verhmently refusing to fix.
>>740095629Regardless, ss3 would still sell way more than those 3 cashgrabs combined, whether it's a smart game or not.
>>740095804Damn
>>740094958Boooo
>>740095870after underworld ascendant the best thing to happen to ss3 was it getting cancelled
>>740097891Underworld Ascendant was fucking atrocious, i really wonder as to how the developers of it had the audacity to sell a pre-production alpha slice for 30 bucks.
>>740098017I'm pretty sure it was a money laundering scheme. At the very least any funding it did have was given to the phone games they decided to make mid-production.
I didnt realize they remastered system shock 2. Ill give it try. Thanks OP
These games are too scary for me :( Especially System shock 2. Obviously the first game looks way too shitty to be scary but it also looks like shit, and it's remake is just like SS2.nuPrey is the same, I just can't.
>>740098792the game is so not scary with its bangin soundtrack thoughhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=800BoswALV8
