What did we do wrong to get trapped in this 21st century loop of getting the same games sold to us over and over again as remasters and rereleases for steadily increasing prices?

Was our sin so great that our punishment is the death of mainstream creativity? Watching what we love get destroyed over and over again decade after decade?
>>
>>740090952
Gaming has never been better. You're just a chud.
>>
>>740090952
You get endless remakes and remasters because they're what you want and you can't stop buying them. You reject the present while being unwilling to let the past go.

Finding that in any Devil May Cry thread I'm the only anon who wants DMC6 while everyone else wants a remake of 1 (or even fucking DMC2 of all games) opened my eyes
>>
>54 years later
>still the goat
>>
>>740091616
>people want DMC2

We're too far gone
>>
>>740092129
How did someone fresh out of their teens make such kino. Shame the original ending is way too abrupt.
>>
We've hit the cost to practicality wall. Production values should've stopped developing in 2005, that way games don't take a fucking decade to make, don't take up triple digit GBs in space, and don't cost hundreds of millions.
>>
>>740091616
its seems like this at a glance but when I think about it every remake that has shown up recently usually spits in the face of original fans with varying degrees. I think the people clamoring for remakes are new fans who want to be a part of "the culture" but refuse to play the original.
>>
>>740090952
This shit was so ass
>>
>>740092575
I played the original MediEvil in the late 90s and still loved the PS4 remake. Granted, I think the devs paid close attention to what not to do through Resurrection.
>>
>>740091616
I feel this way about Fatal Frame. The remake of 2 was actually better than I expected it to be, it actually mixed the camera mechanics up enough to give me hope that a genuinely new game would have some inspiration put into it. For fuck's sake though, the last original game came out back in 2014, it's time for a new one already.
>>
>>740092575
>its seems like this at a glance
It's not just a glance; it's how it is.

>but when I think about it every remake that has shown up recently usually spits in the face of original fans with varying degrees
And still they sold billions and people keep asking for more, proving my point.
>>
>>740090952
>What did we do wrong

We're not doing anything....

Which is exactly the problem.
>>
>>740090952
I have never played a single remake/remaster other than DS1 and RE1.
>>
>>740093038
There won't be a new game; the 2 remake was one of the biggest commercial failures of 2026

>No sales numbers anywhere on any console besides a lonely third place for the ps5 version in France and Japan, only to disappear from the ranks by the next week
>A peak of 3k players on Steam
KT will keep milking Nioh because nothing else sells.
>>
>>740092647
>...compared to the OVAs

Rushed ending aside, Crybaby was still good
>>
>>740093336
Fatal Frame was never a huge seller past the first game. If that was a seriously considered factor then it would've died back in 2006. Hell, had Nintendo not stepped in it very well might have. I'm almost certain either Shibata or Kikuchi have some dirt on someone at KT because I don't know how else the series keeps getting greenlit. That said, they did say the Atelier tier sales of the 4/5 remasters were good at the time so who knows? Maybe it still has a sane budget after all this time.
>>
>>740090952
why is crybaby ending so fucking shit?
>>
>>740090952
Capitalism lol
>>
Find another hobby.
>>
>>740094227
>Fatal Frame was never a huge seller past the first game
2004's videogame budgets =/= 2026 videogame budgets.
2012's videogame budgets =/= 2026 videogame budgets
A game can't be profitable with a few thousand copies sold.

>the Atelier tier sales of the 4/5 remasters were good at the time
Because those were games built from the ground up; they took a game already made and simply ported it so even scarce sales can give you a profit.

Why are people so unwilling to accept that their games bombed and will never get new ones?
>>
>>740094538
*kino
>>
>>740094538
Money or something. The quality of the show fell off of a cliff by episode 5. It feels like all the effort went into *that* chapter and even then the Amon OVA gave it much more impact

What Crybaby did to Zenon is a fucking crime. Crybaby objectively had the best Satan vs Akira fight, even compared to tje manga, though
>>
>>740095056
I still don't understand why no one does this.
If the hobby becomes worthless then you simply move to another one. There's an entire universe out there.
>>
>>740090952
>>740092129
I suddenly realize these two were the inspiration for Griffith and Guts.
>>
>>740091258
Please elaborate?
>>
>>740096576
You're one slow SOB
>>
>>740090952
1) All ideas datamined
2) Normies fully infiltrating the hobby and letting AAA dictate what types of games should be made
3) Indies rising to market power with 0 budget streamslop killing the necessity for mid budget productions or actual good games
4) Millennials growing up to somehow have the worst tastes imaginable despite having grown up in the best gaming era imaginable who enable the status quo
5) Zoomers who think ripping off millennial culture and selling it is something to aspire to
6) Left wing industry hijack running out anybody who doesn't play by their rules
7) Game discourse turning tribalistic and everyone just parroting what everyone else says, dictated by people of influence and not actually thinking for themselves
8) Games as an identity service, people just watch them on YouTube and say they like them to fit in

I can probably keep going forever but there are many bad things happening at the same time. Ironically for all the shit Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite get they're the purest expressions of what is appropriate for the new generations. People seem to have forgotten this is a hobby meant for 10 year olds
>>
>>740090952
A) Support indie devs. I bet you never touched Cultist Simulator or Dead Estate or Sunderfolk.

B) Try series/genres you've never tried before. I was injured recently and I have a lot of free time, so I decided to try the Resident Evil franchise despite not touching it ever before and it's pretty fun. Not 100% my cup of tea but whatever.

C) Make your own. Solo dev has always been a thing and now with coding being done competently enough by AI, there's no excuse for you to not make the game you always wanted to make.
>>
>>740095615
I have other hobbies and still want video games to get better and bring back originality rather than everything being derivative of the 90s-00s golden era. It feel dystopian for lack of a better word
>>
>>740098559

>>
>>740098863
Well, okay. I'm glad you're a man of taste as well. Now try Cultist Simulator.

>>
>>740099663
To be fair, roguelikes in and of themselves isn't a problem--it is a problem when every game is a roguelike or autoclicker slop. Honestly, 2024-2026 was great for indies
>>
>>740099663
And?

5D Chess with Multiversal Time Travel
Age of Wonders 4
Bellagarth's Quest
Book of Hours
Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era
Peak
Resident Evil 2
Rift of the NecroDancer
Runehaven
Secret Agent Wizard Boy
Shadowstone
Stellaris
Tabletop Simulator
Terraforming Mars

Like that's just the shit that's installed on my comp right now.

That was the point that I was trying to make. It's also that it doesn't exist in a vacuum, the entire industry rearranges itself based on the people who keep buying them

It's one of those unsightly things, like manchildren playing the switch. Nothing looks uglier than a gaming industry that holds up these lazy slot machines as the ideal to strive to. If someone can't understand why wearing diapers to a casino is a bad look you can't really explain it much further

That's a retarded analogy. You're not losing anything when you're playing a roguelike other than time, but you're losing time whenever you're playing ANY video game.

im really not trying to be the guy who just responds "they're all shit" but quite literally all of those games are not fun, re2 remake was okay but that game is from 1998, almost 30 years now...

>>740098559
>A) Support indie devs. I bet you never touched Cultist Simulator or Dead Estate or Sunderfolk.
cultist simulator was an instant regret purchase, meaning the other 2 are likely just as bad

>B) Try series/genres you've never tried before. I was injured recently and I have a lot of free time, so I decided to try the Resident Evil franchise despite not touching it ever before and it's pretty fun. Not 100% my cup of tea but whatever.
you played a remake of an old game designed for, quite literally, newcomers who never played the original, if you dont understand why this kinda defeats your point i dont know what else to say

>C) Make your own. Solo dev has always been a thing and now with coding being done competently enough by AI, there's no excuse for you to not make the game you always wanted to make.
Ah yes that's what I wanted to do, MAKE a video game instead of play one. I also guess if im not enjoying modern film or literature i should just redirect my entire career and make films and write books, yes truly insightful thank you!

Those indies are often derivative in and of themselves. We get occasional fantastic original indies like Noita and Mewgenics, but let's not act like 80% of the industry isn't clones and that the golden age isn't long gone.
