Emil's problem isn't that his stories can be boiled down to incredibly simple dynamics with no nuance, it's that he's a pretentious fuckhead. His best writing is when he stops pretending he can write anything other than un-nuanced good faction bad faction and just runs with it.

I dunno if he's improved since Fallout 4 and his talk from 2017, but at least back then, he seemed to legitimately not understand what theme is.
Like he thought the theme of Fallout 4 was "paranoia", and the only thing required to achieve this was to have a few robot people that look like humans. Boom, "paranoia" is the theme. He doesn't seem to have realized that you actually need to *say something* about paranoia for it to be a fully formed theme. What does the story say about what makes people paranoid? What does it say about how people act when paranoid? What does it say about what paranoia does to people? Nothing. He just threw it in like a pinch of salt and let the rest of the story be a generic "save the cat" plot.

Elder Scrolls has never been that and I don't understand why people still pretend it is in arguments. Arena and Daggerfall were dungeon crawlers, that's the franchise's origins future games never really deviated from. It's why Morrowind barely has any choices in the quests themselves beyond accepting them or not. It's why Oblivion and yes, Skyrim, are the same. It's why that excuse doesn't work for Fallout, a franchise whose focus in the first two games was build-based narrative player choice.
They might have more detailed worlds outside the caves and more resources allocated to NPC dialogue, but TES games never stopped being primarily dungeon crawlers with thin stories built around that.
