The shades (or former humans) are clearly murdering villagers and they pose a threat to you, regardless of whether they have their own motivations etc. Taro ties the gameplay to the narrative, but in such a way ruins his own narrative by making the combat so underwhelming. Take the village fight in the Aerie for instance, where the first time you fight the boss and the possessed villagers - it feels impactful. On subsequent playthroughs, it loses any impact it may have had on you, and this is when it SHOULD have an impact on you if anything. This just seems like an idiots version of SOTC and Ico, and Taro seems to be nothing but some mediocre hack who got lucky.
