Atari has officially killed its newest console
It's no longer available for purchase and is no longer featured in its store

Based
>>
I still have no idea why they made this
>>
getting the neogeo instead
>>
I never heard anything about this after they announced it. Didn't even know it released.

Was it just another rehash of the Atari console that already existed with a bunch of ancient games no one is interested in
>>
>>740183232
Where were you when the Jive Turkey's won? (Insert Afro-wojak image)
>>
>>740185303
Brand new console
>>
>>740183232
Would have done much better if it was like those mini-consoles and retailed for $100 or under
Wasn't it nearly $400 at release?
>>
>>740189898
No
>>
>>740183232
was this for new games or a box for old games you can already play for free?
>>
>>740183232
At least it came out and wasn't a complete fraud like the Coleco and Intellivision kickstarter projects.
Still no point to it existing though.
>>
Did this thing have real hardware or was it just plastic holding a pi running .apks
>>
>>740190997
It was a decent budget PC running on a custom Linux OS
>>
>>740191052
Can I get a spec sheet of this thing?
>>
what happened to the kfc console
>>
>>740189898
They have a line of mini consoles. They aro also controller and cartridge compatible old or new abd they even have new games in production

I own one, got the controller bundle last year from amazon on clearance.
The base mode for it isn't anything special, lacking even. You'd buy one for the novelty and pc mode. It's basically a Steam Machine that's about a little stronger than a Switch 1 and a little weaker than an Xbox One, depending on the upgrades you make towards its ssd and ram. Most 7th and 8th gen games run well enough when played on low and through bazzite, and even some modern titles have surprising performance on the thing like Sonic Racing Crossworlds.
The modern controller is just an xbox controller, but the "classic" controller is neat and has a cute gimmick
It's a cute piece of tech, charming even, especially after learning that the Atari it launched under back in 2021 only had about 30 employees total.
Not worth the launch price but for the 90 bucks I paid for it's neat.
Makes me think about its missed potential as an console and competitor this generation. I feel it would have done well enough had Atari actually tried to market the thing beyond its fundraiser and get publishers on board.
>>
>>740190506
it's both and neither
it can act as a mini pc with custom os, upgradable ssd and ram or as a traditional console running atari os and its own store that sells obscure indie slop

>>
>>740190506
New games yeah
>>
>>740191562
Controller any good? I never bought one but I was tempted for it
>>
>>740191874
Hmm, I might have to grab one just for experimentation.

Basically a nice apu machine
>>
>>740191981
It's a fun, novel thing, kinda like the wiimote or the dualsense. For atari and early arcade games it's pretty nice, the main gimmick is the middle stick can be pushed and rotates like a screw. There's enough buttons to potentially play games in an interesting and novel way.
>>
>>740191562
I honestly think for 90 bucks that's pretty fucking good for a low profile machine
>>
>>740192615
Should I pick one up on ebay for mine?
Also what color is your vcs
>>
>>740192615
Should I get this if I actually have an atari stick? I got the one that also works on sega genesis.
>>
>>740193084
It doesn't have any ports for old controllers, only usb
>>
>>740193287
That won't stop me from just making an adapter. Good to know though
>>
>>740183232
How do you rank it among atari consoles
>>
>>740185303
It was a mini-PC. It came with a library of Atari games and had a web store for other games but you could also put a SSD in it and run Windows or Linux just like any other PC.
>>
>>740183232
That's because it was a glorified raspberry pi.

>low end hardware
>boots to Linux with Atari emulators

In fact a pi is more useful.
>>
>>740193962
Its technically its own console
>>
>>740194027
It played new atari games tho
Like Yars Rising
>>
>>740194031
It's technically both.
>>
>>740193820
technically speaking it's the best one as it can emulate every single one before it and then some
financially and culturally however it's the worst one by far
>>
>>740194084
I like to see it as the last gasp of a new console before Atari went back to just emulator machines
Crazy it never had ANY fanbase
>>
>>740194128
The Atari 5200 begs to differ that one sucks ass
I rank it like...
>Lynx
>Jaguar
>7800
>VCS
>2600
>5200
>>
>>740194153
It had a very tiny fanbase who backed the Kickstarter and bought games on its eshop but not nearly enough to keep it alive. Selling for $400 was insane, it was never going to compete with anything at that price. Like the other anon I bought one with the retro joystick and modern Xbox-like gamepad a year or 2 ago for $90. That's when it was obvious they were finally putting it out of its misery.
>>
>>740194345
You know what's weird, Classic Game Room said the same thing about the Atari Jaguar when it was dying, that stores were just giving it away for 50 dollars and he bought 2
>>
>>740194395
That's what usually happens when a system is being closed out. I bought a brand new Gameboy Micro for $40 when they were being cleared out.
>>
>>740194220
Atari System VCS is Approximately...
Atari 2600 10 million–100 million× more powerful
Atari 5200 1 million–10 million× more powerful
Atari 7800 500,000–5 million× more powerful
Atari Lynx 50,000–500,000× more powerful
Atari Jaguar 2,000–10,000× more powerful
Atari Jaguar CD 2,000–10,000× more powerful
>>
>>740194567
I was only a kid around that time but I do remember ads on Nintendos site for GBA micros being...I think 80?
>>
>>740183232
Atari doesn't understand that boomers aren't nearly as dedicated to their nostalgia and IP loyalty the way millennials are.
>>
>>740194667
Idk man their 2600+ sold a few million units
>>
>>740194567
Yeah, back in the day you could get crazy deals on clearance. I got a copy of Drill Dozer for like $10 at Walmart when it was clearanced out.
>>
>>740194667
The Atari that made the VCS isn't the same Atari that is now selling 2600+ and 7800+ consoles that use the actual carts. Boomers buy those because it feeds into their collector mentality. The VCS being severely overpriced and digital only didn't.
>>
>>740194930
No it is
Its just the new ceo stopped that shit
>>
>>740194930
most of the people that worked on the VCS 800 are still there at the company, they just fired the techbros that were into crypto scams and streaming services
>>
>>740191562
Cool anon. I would probably be willing to buy these type of consoles if I had the space for it really. Since I don't have the space or money though I see no point in buying anymore consoles really. I wonder how it did in sales. If there was enough baby boomers and gen xers with enough nostalgia that also knew about this to pick it up.

If you know what you want from one and can find it for 150 or under then go for it.
>what color is your vcs
It's the one with a woodgrain panel, which feels nice to the touch.
Not sure if there's other colors for it besides the all black one.
>>
>>740195560
if it means anything it's about as big as a ps2 slim
>>
>>740196024
I got the black one.
Theres a rumored yellow one
>>
>>740196024
>>
>>740195376
Yeah they fired the retards who fucked up the vcs
>>
Ironically if they had released it now days it would probably do super well with a little marketing. They could easily undercut the steam machine while banking off the excitement for it especially when pcs are so ridiculously overpriced now. They shot themselves in the foot charging 400$ but maybe today they could justify it
>>
>>740196601
Atari making a dumbass decision? Who would have thought
>>
>>740196601
>if they had released it now days it would probably do super well with a little marketing
it likely would have done super well with a little marketing back then too
it feels like they made the hardware but forgot everything else about making a new platform like ads and software
even the Ouya managed to get Sega and Square Enix on board for a few Sonic and Final Fantasy games
>>
>>740196798
Didn't the ouya even have an exclusive
>>
>>740196891
No
>>
>>740197086
Soul Fjord
No Brakes Valet
Killing Floor: Calamity
Monocle Man
Polarity
BoomYA!
TowerFall
Duck Game
That Dragon, Cancer
Broken Age
Whispering Willows

They all got ported but you can't say the ouya wasn't trying
>>
>>740197285
Eh fair
>>
>>740196798
The problem with all of these efforts is that they're unfocused about who they're actually targeting. What got people excited about Ouya was the "easy publishing" they were promising - this was before the explosion of Steam indie publishing, essentially at the nascence of Unity. If they'd offered some real support to get people making their own games and publishing on the platform, it would have done well. Alternatively, I'd always thought that they would have been quite good as media centers for like hotels or something. But they were positioning it as a "real" connected console. Destined for failure.
Similarly, for VCS, I dunno who they should have been targeting, but obviously they didn't hit the people that they were supposed to be.
>>
>>740197730
They should have made a cheap console and try to be a 4th option
>>
>>740197779
Nobody wants that. They want something that's orthogonal to the "real" consoles. You don't win by being "PS5 we have at home".
Options:
>Machine that's easy to develop for
>Machine that's easy to do VR with
>Machine that slots in with some other part of your life, like school (TI calcs) or your commute (phone) or streaming shit (Nvidia Shield)
>>
>>740185184
in full rendered splendor?
>>
>>740197730
>If they'd offered some real support to get people making their own games and publishing on the platform, it would have done well
Ironically they're actually doing this and have the friendliest and cheapest submission proccess in the industry, it's just that nobody gives enough of a shit about the console to actually release any worthwhile games
>>
>>740199456
Kek
>>
>>740199486
The trouble is they tried to be a big boy console before first building up the reputation for it. You don't come out the gate costing the same as the real consoles. You start cheap and as you prove yourself eventually earn the right to charge a premium. If you do charge a premium out the gate you better have some badass specs to back it up at least.

It's like a guy who stays unemployed his whole life because he kept "holding out for a management position" without ever once working even a day to gain any kind of experience to justify that
>>
>>740200246
Yeah again Atari
>>
>>740196470
I wonder if any of those actually released
>>
>>740200349
Somehow they still managed to continue existing after all these years making nothing but mistakes. Impressive really. Yeah only the name has survived and they have nothing in common with the Atari of the 70s but how many other companies from that era can even claim that
>>
>>740200485
the best move they've done so far was fund Nightdive but even then they've done some scummy pricing so it's a double edged sword
>>
>>740200485
Atari is like the Spanish Empire, somehow it keeps trying to destroy itself
Yet somehow it's still releasing hardware, you gotta admit, the fact a new atari system of ANY kind came out less than 5 years ago shows they are never going away
>>
>>740200412
The Black and wood ones came out, everything else is unknown
>>
My groovey bros, what the funk, man?!

Atari sucks since the 90's.

I miss 70's and 80's Atari... also the Lynx was fine.
