And you may ask why is that the case why should I care if the character is old or not? well it's because it offers a different approach to writing where the character is not in a journey to discover themselves, but rather reinforcing their beliefs about how the world works and predict how the story unfolds themselves. It also keeps the writing less zoomer/millennial-esque where they try to be the funniest in the room but that's not always the case.

It's why there's a huge focus on accessibility features these days: so anyone and everyone can enjoy games regardless of their overall wellbeing.My mother is 64 years old and got into video games maybe 4 years ago. Video games have been an immense comfort for her once she realized that not everything is Call of Duty or Fortnite. She tried Animal Crossing New Horizons on a whim and was blown away by the idea that you could just relax, catch bugs/fish, and decorate your home. From there she tried Fallout 4 on the easiest difficulty, The Sims with some cheats on, Minecraft on Peaceful/Creative, and more as time went on. Eventually, she even got into Baldur's Gate 3, BotW, and No Man's Sky. Almost all of the games either were calm/comfy experiences, or offered a wide variety of difficulty settings, accessibility features, and customizable combat experiences including outright invincibility. Your goal shouldn't be to make games "for" older demographics. Good gameplay and stories don't need to be geared towards one group or another. If they're good, they're good. But difficulty settings and accessibility features are what get people into games they may have never tried. And as much as people may bemoan things like easy difficulties or auto-complete combat, it can lead to people like my mother getting into more games, trying new things, and even playing without those features eventually. Devs should make good games first. Then, add in features to allow people of all skill levels and lifestyles to try it. Or just make a good game and say fuck it, if it's not for you it's not for you. Catering to specific demographics does a disservice to that demographic and then fails to appeal to any others outside of it.
