Anyway at the very least some kind of neuralink enhanced lucid dreaming doesn't sound impossible. All you have to do is figure out how to

1) make a normal dream into a lucid dream
2) make the lucid dream stable

Another thing that would help is some kind of I/O, which should be possible because that's the first thing they are doing with neuralink. Being able to exit voluntarily is probably the most important thing.

As far as true VR, somekind of "holodeck"-like system might be more practical.
A system that somehow "builds" the environment around you.

Even if we ignore any potential discovery in the physics (somehow convert energy in to matter) and stick to the current state of art, I wouldn't be surprised if in a decade or two some combination of robotics with projection mapping(or some other display tech) could deliver some decent results.

HMD based VR might significantly improve by then as well. Combining that with robotics(exoskeleton) for full body haptic feedback could work really well.
