He's probably just misremembering the K. Rool requirement. All you actually need is:
100 Gold Bananas
15 Banana Medals
Rareware Coin
Nintendo Coin
8 Boss Keys
Enough colored bananas in each level to get to get those boss keys.
Enough coins to buy all the moves.
Enough Blueprints for you to get through Hideout Helm in time, amount will vary depending on your skill.

Played the game when (You) were still swimming around in your dad's nutsack and even then, I thought the game was slow and plodding as fuck. Your favorite youtuber did not invent the opinion that DK64 is ape ass.

If you're gonna play a N64 platformer, go play something like Bomberman Hero, Mischef Makers, Bing Bing Wahoo 64 or Goemon instead.

One Banana Medal for picking up 75 Bananas for a kong in a stage. Basically collect 75% of the total bananas in 3 stages

Rare coin isnt that hard. Nintendo coin sucks since you have to beat jank ass DK Arcade twice

Boss keys are you unlock each fucking stage of course you collect those

Non issue theres way more than enough coins available to buy all the moves and upgrades in the game with a ton leftover

That's a disingenuous argument, because most of the shit you said take into account that someone already knows the ins and outs of the games in order to minimize backtracking. If you're a new player bumbling through levels for the first time, you have no frame of reference for when you're "done" to a good enough point to move on to the next level.

The frame rate was too good so the opening got desynced. Anything that was timed around the lower frame rate was also faster. So the rabbit race was almost impossible unless the rabbit got stock on the Kasplat. The minigame where you're trying to not shoot a Kong was also impossible if you weren't already aiming at a spot where the golden banana appears or pause cheesing it.

I genuinely don't know if I would like the game again, playing it today. I remember getting 100% as a kid and having a decent time, the only thing I remember really fucking hating was the explicitly harder version of arcade DK and having to do it twice. Did I beat it back then because I actually liked the game, or because I had way more free time back then? A tad curious to answer that question now. It's the kind of game you could only enjoy in the pre-Internet era, when entertainment was at a premium, so you could actually sit down and play this long-ass grindfest, running in circles for hours. It's not like you had many better things to do. But these days, when I play something like this, I just realize that I could be watching something good right now, or playing something better, or doing literally anything else, my options are endless. That makes games like DK64 worthless in retrospect. If your game is long, it better have actually rewarding gameplay and really solid design, or I simply won't bother.

If you played the Banjo-Kazooie series, it feels like a B side version of Banjo-Kazooie levels (quite literally, Fungus Forest is a scrapped Banjo level) and a weird experimentation of Tooie's shenanigans. Mini games, bosses, character swapping, large worlds etc. you can TELL it was the beta testing for all these ideas but it somehow feels more disorganized to me. There's also the music of Grant Kirkhope but not as good.

I'm an aging boomer so I use Facebook and I've seen reels of blacks selling Sam's Club/Costco pineapple buckets that they dumped a packet of Kool Aid. I skip the videos almost immediately, but my assumption is that it's a jogger delicacy and likely a Tiktok trend or something.

Question: did they fix the speed issues that plagued the Wii U VC release of the game?

>>740204906 is the BIG one, but there are a few other things that ran too fast like the beetle races in Angry Aztec.

>Its been proven that you can reach the final boss of the game only ever entering each world once
"Dude, the game isn't a slog if you learn skips to break the intended sequence such as not requiring to enter Grunty Industries from the train station first" doesn't make Tooie sound as appealing as you think.
>>
>>740208910
Thankfully the Switch version doesn't have that horrid dark filter. That was a Wii U virtual console thing, Switch NSO doesn't do it.
>>
if you play dk64 without insta char switch you are actually insane.
>>
>NSO Expansion Pass subscription active
>NSO N64 controller charged

Yep, it's time to probably not enjoy it since I didn't like Banjo Tooie.
>>
>>740200934
I like DK64 because it filters anyone without object permanence, spatial awareness and basic motor skills. It has some of the best pacing, content density and gameplay variety out of all the 3D platformers on N64, including Mario 64, but if you don't use your brain, you'll probably be wandering around and backtracking for hours because you keep forgetting where the collectibles are, like some kind of human goldfish. Also I've heard people unironically having trouble controlling Diddy's jetpack or completing the Jetpac ZX Spectrum game, something I didn't struggle with when I was 4 years old. I'm convinced these people have only played movie games where you mash X and watch cutscenes like a braindead zombie. If someone shits on DK64, I don't trust their opinions on video games because they wouldn't apply to me at all.

>>740208908
They kept the slowdown during the opening movie, so that DK doesn't jump into the water, but the gameplay itself has no lag at all. It also runs at a higher resolution than native, at least 2x (maybe more but I'm not sure). For comparison, I tried the game on the Analogue3D, which tries to be accurate to the original N64 hardware, and if you go in the settings to unleash the framerate on that, it breaks the opening movie, but if you don't, the game has major slowdowns during gameplay. The NSO version fixes that, and is the best version of the game so far imo. The Wii U version had a weird problem where it was too dark, but the NSO version is very vibrant and beautiful. With the NSO N64 controller you even get rumble. I remember in one of the later barrel minigames on Wii U you had to pause the game because it went too fast due to no slowdown, but I haven't made it that far on the NSO version yet to test if they fixed that.
>>
>>740201076
>this game has been free to emulate for like 20+ years
And in those 20+ years it's still one of the worst N64 games to emulate. Even the best setup isn't running the game exactly as the original cartridge does, there's too many things tied to the specific framerate that makes it hard to replicate in software.
Even Nintendo's second go around with this release isn't strictly 1:1, though they put a lot of effort to get the title demos to work properly this time.
>>
This game really has a cult fanbase in nipland. I heard of it before but now I'm witnessing it first person with all the posts about the NSO release on Japanese twitter.

>Even the best setup isn't running the game exactly as the original cartridge does
I don't think any N64 game emulates perfectly, I recently learned about that "perfect" NES emulator that uses like 2GB of RAM, being perfect is hard.

>play tag anywhere version
>whole time think about i couldve been playing the creator's vision
>>
>>740210060
You might think it won't be counted because it's an emulator, but speedrunners actually do consider them if it's an official release. King's Field and Shadow Tower speedruns were being done on PSTV for a while, just because the digital versions skip disc reading and you can map the analog sticks to buttons. If it turns out you can do a faster speedrun using NSO, we're going to see a whole lot more broken N64 controllers.
>>
>>740214897
There were Wii U speed issues? And here I thought most minigames were always that tricky.
>>
>>740217192
>more broken N64 controllers.
For some reason I assumed runners would primarily use GCN controllers like they do for many N64 games but I guess n64 pads are pretty typical, albeit modified

>>Expansion Pack required
>Just like the original N64 version, kek.

The game may have cost $70. But it came bundled with the 4MB RAM pak. The game, for what it is worth, is a massive collectahon with a lot to do. It is a massive 3D platformer for a 5th gen game. back in the day the four player couch co-op aspect made it not feel like a rip off. I feel like some reviewers were hard on this game because they were burnt out by large scale 3D platformers.

>>
>>740217870

Seems like cheating.
>>
>>740218013
Depends entirely on the game, category. I'm only really familiar with Ocarina and Majora stuff, but certain things are permitted while others are not. That'd be something worth seeking info out on like a dedicated DK64 speedrun website or something
>>
>>740202025
Toxotranny is Switch cattle. What a shock.
>>
>>740217289
DK64 was coded such that in areas where there was high lag the game naturally increases the speed of everything to compensate. Because the Wii U version did not have the lag this just results in some parts of the game becoming turbo fast because it still increases the speed trying to compensate for lag that no longer exists.
>>
>>740204401

>>
>>740218598

It's not really even about free time, it's about lack of competing interests.

In ye olde days you didn't have 5,000 other games also competing for your attention. The idea of a backlog doesn't even make sense when you only got to play like 4-5 games an entire year. Now, that kind of lifestlye is so strange it sounds unbelievable.
>>
>>740218656

it's Dandori, you explore with one character you note everything you see, then when you go to the tag barrel later you line up objectives in your mind and the order to tackle them, that's DK 64
I liken it to Pikmin because of returning to the onion to exchange Pikmin, and micromanaging them for objectives
