Designing characters like Lara as icons and then later attempting to make them 'realistic' means you fundamentally misunderstood the character. Even more high tech games on systems like the PS2 and PS3 could attempt realism and, because they couldn't get it perfectly, injected some beauty and perfectionism into it.Also poor face scanning actively ruins even real life beauty standards. Making any average looking person even worse and actively destroying beauty. And alongside the realism trend, came worse lighting, textures and performance. In the past, games could be designed with needless bloom in all the right places to make games look more ethereal in nature. Color palettes could be artistic and vibrant. Nothing would be directly bound by realism to a fault, like today.
