This is the Season 2 update, basically a relaunch of the game where everyone's account is wiped clean. The game is F2P for a week to coincide with this big update.
With all of that, the best they could muster one day after launching the big update, is 37k. Big trouble for Bungie. Mind you, a mere day later, they have already lost 3k players. It is somehow LOSING PLAYERS in its second day of F2P week. Usually when any game goes F2P they trend up and up.

The repetition of last season's contracts is probably one of the worst things Bungie could have done for Marathon's player retention. Seasons are supposed to progress the story, and a small handful of contracts every 3 months on top of the existing pile of contracts won't cut it. I understand the reasoning behind the player resets, but why do the factions also get amnesia? And it's not like contracts are hard to make, they are just objectives on a map and some voice acting. This is Bungie being lazy when they can't afford to be lazy.

I gave the game an actual try and I still won't buy it. I played the game as a solo mostly and it didn't feel like a game I'd want to come back to. The best part of the game is unironically the PVE while the PVP sucks actual dick. I don't know if the PVP gets better with higher tier gear but with lower tier gear it actually does come down to who saw who first. Even in trios I didn't see too many opportunities to use abilities because players just die so fast.

This game should have focused on PVE the night marsh map is actually pretty cool aesthetically and gameplay wise needing to use light. Unfortunately I don't think this game can live as a PVE game without adding more/varied AI enemies. It just doesn't do either well enough to stand alone on their own.

This game doesn't have a subscription. The shells don't lend themselves to cosmetic monetization, as because it's a hero shooter, the shells need to be visually distinct.

You can track about how many people are using the paid shells from streamers, and it's close to nobody, and that includes the streamers.

Finally, the budget on this game is AAAA, and it has 400 of the most expensive devs in the world, PLUS whatever d2 refugees survive the upcoming layoffs to support.

We can draw reasonable curves for max monetization and min based on the existing player base, and it doesn't fucking matter, because it's several SD below break even during it's free to play week.

After a concordillion hours in Marathon I've realized that incidental PvP never bothers me or my shitter friends, it's just that 90% of matches play like battle royales where you die within the first 5 minutes by a giga-geared team rushing you off spawn. I don't think a PvE mode would even be necessary if the maps were much bigger and didn't always signal where you were on the map (keys, exfils, bosses, etc). Night Marsh does help this problem with the darkness and inside exfils but it also pushes everyone to Complex in the same way Outpost pushes everyone to Pinwheel.

I think the only significant fuckup on a game front was the involuntary wipes because it just establishes a sense of "why would I play right now when there's going to be a fresh start in like two weeks anyway?"

Player decay does happen. They aren't necessarily wrong with that (see: Path of Exile 1-2's Steam numbers, it'll bleed players as the season goes on, but not as MASSIVE numbers like Marathon). Marathin being an extraction shooter isn't what doomed the game, the design being too brutal to casuals and pandering to streamers and sweats is what doomed it.

High level players and sweats don't want sbmm because they want to stomp their lobbies. Casuals don't want to be stomped every game.

I don't know how much they improved the casual experience this season, but if they don't make the game enjoyable for the bottom rung of players, numbers will just fall back to 10-12k peaks again or even further.

Wipes might seem good in theory, to level the playing field but they're best for active skilled players who get to play with the bottom rung of players again because no sbmm.

If they do add casual friendly pve modes the sweats won't be happy because they want to stomp casuals.

Solo mode was an afterthought and not balanced for it also harming the casual experience.
