Is this really the greatest roguelike ever created?

What roguelikes do you enjoy?
>>
>>740215915
are you a dumb shill who's posting trash straight from the game's PR assets?

Lets check your taste. Tell us about a few non supergiant games you like and why.
>>
>>740215915
Hades was a mistake
It should have been a linear story like Supergiant's precious games. They created banger after banger we don't talk about Pyre then they made Hades and haven't made anything else since. Instead of making more excellent games they're now a rogueshite company
>>
>Is this really the greatest roguelike ever created?
No not even close. It's a decent game but verges on disappointing considering how good the first games was. The new art style isn't as appealing, the story isn't as engaging and the content is more stretched out than the original
>What roguelikes do you enjoy?
1. FTL
2. Tainted Grail: Conquest
3. Hades
4. Nowhere Prophet
5. Balatro

I actually really like the genre i know some people find them cringe or an oversaturated market. Card based ones like Tainted Grail: Conquest and Nowhere Prophet are generally my favorite but FTL is still the best I've ever played. No idea how many hours I've put into it over the years
>>

I need to replay ftl
Also skull hero slayer is great

Did you really have to start the thread with a joke?
>>
>>740215915
Yes. The system they created is fucking incredible. I don't think I ever pulled off two identical builds in Hades 1 or 2, the combinations arealmost endless and it never, ever dropped FPS no matter what insanity was happening on screen.
In comparison shit like Nightreign is a clown game.
Curse of rogue-likes is that games are usually built as linear experience, and then they deny you access to some gear you would normally pick up and call it a day.
>>
>>740216182
have you played crying suns? I recommend to any FTL fan
>>
>>740216114
I agree with this. I liked Bastion and I think Hades would have been excellent if it stuck to that style instead of dripfeeding me story and unlocks.
>>
>>740215915
The most mid game to ever mid, maybe it would have been interesting if it came out in 1997
>>
>>740215915
I don't enjoy indie roguelike trash. Fuck off back to your adhd cave.

I will not buy it
I will not play it
I will not even pirate it
The fact that you were hired to splash image shill it again only confirms it's a flop.

Based. No one talks about this game but it was really fucking good. Too bad it didn't sell well and the dev couldn't justify adding more to it.
>>
>>740217394
Yea i really enjoyed mixing and matching the different decks/unit types the gameplay was great. Hard difficulty is so unfair thobeit i don't think ive ever beaten it on hard i always get fucked by the final boss. Yea i follow the creator on X Martin Nerurkar i don't know what he's working on atm
>>
>>740215915
Its fun, but woke as fuck.
The characters are hideous.

None. Shit genre.

Consult the chart.
I like both Hades games quite a bit but they are not roguelikes.
>>
>>740217814
>it's not a roguelike unless it's literally rogue
>>
>>740217891
It has to be LIKE ROGUE to be a ROGUELIKE.
>>
>>740215915
>be roguelike
>boring builds
>barely any content
>no replayability
>>
>>740217937
why can't a game be like rogue if you control multiple characters instead of one character?
why can't a game be like rogue if it's from a third person or first person perspective?
why can't a game be like rogue if it has guns or jumping?
>>
>>740215915
this is not a roguelike
at all
god I hate you
>>
>>740217987
Because that is not LIKE ROGUE
>>
>>740217814
Rogue is not a roguelike either, it's a turn based RPG
If you think about it, roguelikes don't even exist, actually
>>
>>740218015
something can be like rogue without being exactly the same as rogue in every way
hence rogue"like", and not "rogue"
>>
>>740215915
It looks like garbage and therefore is garbage
>>
>>740217987
Also a game can have guns and jumping and still be a roguelike. It simply has to be implemented in a way that is like rogue.
>>740218048
Rogue invented the genre so I suppose it technically isn't a roguelike. Something cannot be imitating itself.
>>
>>740218095
Rogue has all the characteristics of Rogue, therefore it's a roguelike.
>>
>>740215915
Returnal shits on this.
>>
>>740218095
>It simply has to be implemented in a way that is like rogue.
why should it have to be implemented the same way as rogue?
the term "roguelike" refers to procedural generation and permadeath, not gunplay or movement mechanics
>>
>>740215915
I can't say it's the greatest since I have almost no experience besides the two games in the franchise in the genre but it's insanely fun imo.
/v/ has a hateboner because there are woke characters in it but I find the overall art really good and I think 2 is better than 1 in almost every single way except for the ending.
I enjoyed Mel's story a lot more than Zag though I still like both.
>>
>"yeah that game is a decent doom clone"
>years later
>"you know what, this doom clone label sounds stupid now, there are millions of games just like doom and many are pretty good to stand on their own and not be considered clones of something else, maybe we should find some other term?"

>"yeah that's a decent rogue like"
>years later
>"UHMMM ACKSHULLY THAT GAME IS NOT A ROGUELIKE BECAUSE IT'S NOT EXACTLY *LIKE* ROGUE??? HEH YEAH BET U FEEL STUPID NOW ANYWAYS NEXT TIME PLEASE CONSULT THIS RETARDED AUTISTIC DOCUMENT THE ELDER MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WROTE IF YOU NEED HELP LOL RETARD........"

why it be like this
better not get started on"metroidvania"
>>
>>740215915
Not a roguelike
>>
>>740218610
doom clone isn't a genre retard
>>
>>740215915
And what gives any of these listed magazines and websites any legitimacy? Why should I care what any of them think?
>>
>>740215915
RogueLITE
Hades 2 fails to meet the criteria established by the Berlin Interpretation to be called a roguelike.
My favorite roguelike is Jupiter Hell.
>>
>>740216612
I played the Crysing Suns but just could not get into it.
I love FTL, but Crying suns gameplay loop was not my thing.

Minecraft hardcore

Skul the hero slayer is the one I spent the most time with, the variety of builds you can use are insane.

I guarantee you final fight alone requires more strategy than every single rougelike ever made combined, post your fucking 1CC now!
>>
I enjoyed it but its soo repetitive
just 2 maps / paths and final bosses and that's it
>>
>>740222659
>>
It is the apex of the genre. When you die in Hades, you always think "Next time, I should be able to get further than last time." "Let's try a different build because I failed last time" or "Let's aim for the same build because I got far" gives you a simple but engaging way to plan out your runs. So few rougelikes do this. Either it's too fucking random what you get or you smash your face into the same rock over and over.

>It has to be LIKE ROGUE
There is no definition of how much it has to be like Rogue, since "like" is a relative term and has no established depth.
Thus the chart (>>740217814) is going about it the wrong way. It would be more appropriate to use some form of the 3x3 grid for how "rebellious" the game is to its structure and systems.
Plus truthfully none of that really matters since the term has evolved beyond itself like how Incel has. Its meaning has also been obliterated by the masses. No matter how often you yell correct information into the void, it will not be swayed nor heard. It has been twisted into something beyond your control.

The punchline? Rogue would not qualify as a Roguelike despite having all the features of Rogue. It simply is Rogue, so it would be the most rebellious form of Roguelike because it cannot be like Rogue as it *is* Rogue. This makes Rogue a soulslike RPG, not a Roguelike.
