For me some guy down the road played Ragnarok Online in like 2004, it was absolutely insane to me that with our newly installed internet I could play with people all over the world, see them in town & what they were wearing. We could team up and fight monsters, get super rare drops and collect items to make funny hats all whilst leveling up and progressively growing more powerful. I played a really crappy Assassin class with poorly optimized stats and no knowledge of synchronizing skill use with particular weapon/armor. Just spent weeks killing firemen looking dudes in Bio Labs 2 with sonic blow, and then much later Venatu robot in Juperos with Cloak + Grimtooth.

I also played Runescape but it just wasn't the same, still amazing though all the schoolkids played runescape. Would fish lobsters at Karamja then take the boat and run all the way to Draynor bank & back. Secretly calling that phone number on mums mobile phone the first time i purchased membership and made it through that gate, did 'Witches Garden' quest immediately.

Warcraft III was huge, i got Frozen Throne first with some birthday money and then realized i needed the base game to complete the installation. Borrowed a friends CD Key but we couldn't get online simultaneously so eventually bought a battlechest. Me & two of my brothers would to take turns with the single computer which sucked, all of us playing War 3.

When i got a computer of my own i'd stay at my friends house every single weekend for years, hauling all my equipment. We would play Warcraft 3 / TF2 whilst David Letterman was on the TV. Usually trying to time it right and jump in lobbies for Tree Tag, Run Kitty Run, Biohazard, Pimp My Peon, Hero Line Wars, X Hero Siege, Kodo Tag, Sheep Tag, Escape gay hell, Pyramid Escape. Never DOTA because we'd have to download the map and would just get booted

Then one day i noticed two pages ripped out of a magazine that combined made a poster on his wall, It was WoW and the rest is history.

this is quite relatable, I had a similar path back in 2005-2008 or so, I remember playing Warcraft 3 RoC/TFT pirated because i'm an eastern european, piracy is normalized here, and then like after beating the campaigns multiple times (often with godmode) I realized there's sort of private b.net servers, holy fuck did that open a whole ass pandora's box of some of the most fun custom game modes I've ever played, I thought about them at school, I thought about them before bed, I dreamt them, it was unreal.
WoW private servers also came for me in like 2006-2007 or so, most were buggy messes that teither ran vanilla or tbc but levelling in low rate servers was always so much fun, I only ever gotten like 5 toons on private servers.

•Leveling. Maybe fun once, but the vast majority of people quit very early -- sub-10 and sub-max. Makes the world seem see-through because it's just a static land with static NPCs, 90% of which obsolete as you level past them. Players are massively segregated. Dozens to hundreds of hours of a dumbed down, forced tutorial.
•Bind-on. Makes most drops you get worthless. Undermines the economy and disallows piecemealing, which would let more people see more content.
•Gold repairs. Let's durability be repaired without materials, which would give millions of resources a reason to exist. Undermines risk:reward, which would keep people on the edge of their seats.

Warhammer Online and Planetside 2 release hypetrains demolished WoWs initial release. They were PvP games though so they didn't have the legacy Everquest paypiggy crowd to prop them up in perpetuity. WoW probably won't die until they die off like the boomers.

Most was useless because the stats made no sense. Because for some of the specs the devs did not seem to have a clear idea what they wanted it to be or do. There was vast amounts of redundant stuff in the game that got changed or removed last minute but everything around it did not.
Example: Small agility shields everywhere. Most would probably not remember, but before release Rogues could use small shields.

No, you have to farm for honor gear, and then conquest gear. Which has always been cringe and in the game.
The one + DF did ass was crafted gear that you get every other week. But for pvp, you have to buy something in addition to those weeks to craft a piece of gear thats for pvp.

One for honor currency, the other from conquest. So yes you can pretty fast get into it, since the charges I said earlier for crafted gear is around I think 14? So thats 7 pieces of gear you can craft at the highest ilvl.
(Two Handed weapons require 4 of them, so it might be a 2h weapon and 5 pieces of crafted gear.
But as soon as you hit max level you can start playing thats all
