Twilight Princess not only gave Link a more expanded kit, but gave you the ability to set the flow of combat, the moves you could do in Wind Waker were now moves you could execute whenever you wanted. It was a natural advancement of the formula. SS was a nice gimmick for those who liked the Wii, but it was a step back in freedom. Then BOTW/TOTK brought it down even further with spammable flurry rush, weapon breaking, and Link being able to keep a buffet of food up his skirt. What Zelda needs is TP combat options and freedom of execution, combined with tougher enemies some of which requiring certain moves in order to break their defenses. There were some enemies like this in TP, but their damage output was far too low. I think getting to see how OOT Link developed his hidden skills would be a great excuse to implement corrections. Link getting sent back initiates Ganondorf's premature defeat, but due to Link bringing the complete Triforce of Courage back with him, the remaining pieces naturally find their most suitable hosts in the past, creating the "divine prank" moment. Ganondorf's execution is botched and he is banished to the dark world, setting the stage for the Twilight invasion hundreds of years later. Zelda fucked everything up.

The issue with being sent back is that mentally Link had completely changed, the tragedy comes from the fact that he couldn't just "become a kid again", he couldn't undo all the development he had nor the loss of innocence. So being trapped in a child's body must have been horrible for him, which is how you get Majora's Mask. The only warmth he got after all that shit was Malon's melons in his face... which is why I think he shacked up with her, he wanted that comfort all the time, especially since he didn't have a mother, and Zelda fucked him over badly with that time travel shit.
