It's not really that big of a niche, recommend good ones! Whereas dating sims are usually multi-route stories, these are usually single routes with bad ends, with a prevailing plot and minor character mysteriesFor example, well known classics would be >428: Shibuya >Danganronpa (all entries) >Umineko & Higurashi>Ace Attorney Chronicles and Investigations>999 seriesLesser known ones like>Return to Shironagasu Island >Guilty Parade >Raging Loop >Gnosia
Root letter was pretty boring so I dropped it early on....
Kamaitachi no Yoru / Otogirisou are classics that remain without official ports in English>the last window (DS)looks interesting, but I've never played it
Counting all tookyogames releases in with danganronpa (Death Come True, Code Rain, 100 Line)
>>740235306Cartagra/ Kara no Shoujo
Saya No Uta counts, I think
>>740235306
The Abime trilogy is well-done.
>>740235306>>740235306>Danganronpa (all entries)Sorry, but you're a lost cause. Play Of the Devil, Paranormasight, 13 Sentinels, etc.
>>740235306i hate reading but had fun playing every ace attorney game, even the bad cases
>>740235306>Danganronpa (all entries)Only the first one is "good"
>>740238705Categorically and 100% completely incorrect
>>740238026>mixing supernatural elements into a mysteryif you want to cosplay as a mystery game ig
>>740235306>>740238962Get back to your general, Danganautist.
>>740238026>Of the Devilthis looks really good
I should try Rose Gun Days
>>740235306Raging Loop and Gnosia are in a weird place where they're not big enough for people who aren't already into the genre to know about them but anybody who's somewhat invested will have at least heard of them. I'd say something like The Silver Case would be a fair comparison while the other two mentioned are obscure even to genre fans.
>>740239220I don't main /v/, but I've visited that general before, so I cannot completely condemn your immediate disgust.
>>740235306Ace Attorney is not a VN, for fucks sake.
>>740239287You're right there, the silver case is almost too tedious to be considered a good game though
>>740239376Of course it is, it's in like the top 10 best known visual novels.
>>740239451>too tedious to be considered a good game Sasuga Suda-san
>>740239520Adventure game actually. People have no idea what genres even mean nowadays, VN is more of a digital picture book than an actual playable game.
>>740239520It's more about fitting cultural and genre related standards than autistic technical requirements, if you narrowed it down to just "text games", or, "choose your own story" style adventure games, you'd be adding an unnecessary layer of discrimination that separates-nvm you've said this in the clarification>>740239669
>>740239669It's embarrassing watching you try to be pedantic while being wrong. Genres aren't mutually exclusive.
>>740239825slam-dunked that loser
>>740239825They aren't but AA is still not a VN.
>>740239520It's a point-and-click adventure series with puzzle segments. Just because something is listed on VNdb doesn't make it a visual novel. A lot of games that are not VNs feature character portraits along with dialog, but you should understand the difference between a visual novel and something with the interactivity of Ace Attorney.
>>740239669I don't want to fight a losing cultural battle, so I'd just rather call them visual novels. I appreciate your knowledge on the matter though anon.
>>740239768>cultural and genre related standardslolYou said nothing of substance the entire post. Lemme call Mario a FPS, platformers is an "unnecessary layer of discrimination "
>>740239825>>740239859You are morons. Listen to me: A visual novel is defined by its limitations. If you expand those limitations to a bunch of RPG elements like Rance, or puzzle adventure games like Ghost Trick, you risk diluting the definition of VN so much that half the fucking games you've ever played could technically count as VNs. That is stupid. Don't do that.
paranormasight was promising in the beginning but it got very whatever with each passing hour. I haven't played the 2nd game, maybe it ended up being better. All in all finishing it was worth it.
>>740240164Judging by your example, you failed to understand the logic communicated in my post. Worry not. I forgive you, there's no need to try again.
>>740239358DR is part of the reason /vg/ was originally created, along with League of Legends and something else I can't remember.
>>740240584I would create a containment board for that mess too
>>740240820The /dr/ general on /vg/ I mean
>>740240264>A visual novel is defined by its limitationsThat's not how genres work. Genres are additive content indicators not subtractive.
>lemme play the latest VN...Persona 5>oh, have you checked that other VN TlOU?
I played Murders on the Yangtze River recently and it was fantastic. It's up there with the very best the Ace Attorney series has to offer, IMHO, and it maintains that level of quality throughout.
I hope Kamaitachi no Yoru is translated to english at some point. It’s probably the most famous mystery vn still japanese only.
>>740241994Wasn't there a translation on iPhone at one point?
>>740240264That's wrong, but let's pretend I agree that these games are not "really" VNs. They are still games with strong VN storytelling elements, though. Can we not discuss them in the context of more "pure" VNs, especially in regards to a genre (for example, mystery)? Is anyone harmed by this?
Feels like progression is pretty different between games like AA/DN to, say, Monkey Island. In the former you have investigation phases to screw off and get lots of miscellaneous information you then synthesize into solutions to specific questions the court phases ask you later, but in adventure games it's more like you're given specific problems, then go off on a huge hunt in the overworld to find stuff that specifically addresses those questions rather than just looking for information in general. I don't know if that difference is enough to call the two different genres though - maybe the former just flows cinematically better.
I liked Sekimeiya a lot.I didn't even hate Shiroya city.
>>740243725Only if you let me discuss every point-n-clicker and rpg ever made if the rpg has dialog box clicking.
Magical Girl Witch Trials is a good game that will make big waves when it gets an English TL. It's the only high-production value fangan to come out in ten years, and is incredibly popular in Asia. The twists and mysteries in it are quite compelling. Keep an eye out for it.
No one ever even talks about my smelly girl from Phenomeno, but I loved the VN and only wished it was longer and they adapted more of the series
>EVN sloppaseriously, nigger?
>>740241994rinne saisei edition has been translated for two years, friendo
AABros…
>>740235306Shigatsu youka is japanese only I think but is now in the VNDB top 10So is ooe but that's gay
>>740235306Maybe look into Urban Myth Dissolution Center, OP. It's got light mystery elements and is much more a VN than anything (no game overs, for example), but it's definitely mystery/occult themed. And Azami a cute.
>>740248001won't believe it until i see it
