all I knew about these games is that they were royally shit on. I was trying to look up gameplay of VIII and must have clicked on a XIII video on accident, but the combat looked so cool I decided to play it. I had a jailbroken PS3 at the time, so I played XIII and XIII-2 for free and it was years after release so I didn't have any pressure or expectations. the negative points are all true, I'm not going to defend this or that. I just like it though. probably the best looking game I've ever played on polish and art direction alone. the lore is retarded but somehow the world is so cool you want to make it all work in your head. the 6 or so long FMVs were enough of a reward to keep playing.the combat is actually cool. it sucks if you don't finish the game, the combat until you unlock everybody does not push you to try hard. but even the final boss is tough enough that you have to really understand the paradigm system. it's almost like some kind of futuristic meta-jrpg system, like if you fast forwarded 100 years and inputting commands was so boring you just control the high level. and desu the number of actions per second is high, probably the only jrpg I've ever played where I would be standing up pacing during fights mashing the button hoping it would make the atb gauge charge faster

Finished XIII last week. First time, no nostalgia nothin. Game sucks. Combat is paper thin in complexity all the way to the end. Essentially amounts to just switching between party stances. Linear corridors the game. Cutscene > walk forward into contextless random monsters > combat > repeat for 40hours. The "open" world section is BS. Same thing as before but now you can skip side content or do it in whatever order you want. Boring.Story/characters are meh, not terrible, but so poorly expressed/presented that its hard not to be confused. So often I was thinking "wtf are we doing here? whats our goal?" etc.Visuals, cgs, character designs, music are all great.Also wtf is that equipment upgrade system. What were they smoking when they thought up that...I'd rate it under XV, XVI and XII (just)
