playing oot for the first time, this was kino. Water temple isn't as bad as people say

Yes it was "as bad" as people say.
>>
i don't remember the water temple being particularly hard to the point of reaching meme status

there was one room with a hidden path under a platform that would rise with the water

i think it tripped up a lot of people because you had to turn around to even notice it
>>
>>740242232
Water temple was worse as a kid playing in brief sessions between school and homework/chores supper.
You'd make a little progress, save and quit, come back at the entrance to the temple and spend half your okay session figuring out which of the identical doors on the identical walls of all 4 identical floors you had already finished and which one you needed to go through next.
It's not a badly designed temple, it's just very inconvenient if you need to backtrack to refresh your memory or redo a water level change to check something.

>>740242785
The softlock was only in Master quest and it was "solved" with a devkey hidden in a wall.

That's early 10's anon. And yes I recall Egoraptor being a faggot about OoT. I think this point in time really exposed the "generational gap" between late Gen Xers who grew up with the SNES and millennials, because a lot of them simply couldn't get the hang of a 3D spacial environment during the N64 transition, probably because they skipped the console altogether.

>Water temple isn't as bad as people say
lol that's the best dungeon in the game, lets go ahead and red pill the youngins'

I'm not sure it holds up. It doesn't have analog camera, it runs at 240p resolution and average 20fps, there's hitching when you pause the game, saving quitting and resuming doesn't retain your position in the game, most puzzles involve block pushing or just shooting a switch, there's unskippable cutscenes every 30 seconds, the lock on bounces to enemies you dont intend it to, there's knee high fences you cannot vault over, there's inclines the horse refuses to move beyond, you have to play several songs and run back to the temple of time to transform between child and adult forms, rupees are completely worthless and seemingly the only reward you get for exploration, the dialogue options are redundant just forcing you to pick Yes, there's tons of things the game just doesn't explain, there's tons of things the game over explains, the map is useless, a lot of the only sidequests in the game are fetch quests, nonexistent swimming controls, arbitrary limitations between child and adult link items, the teleports between areas leave a lot to be desired, no faster movement mechanic for young link, the challenge is virtually nonexistent, there's a lot of backtracking for 100% completion, Navi gets stuck repeating the same info routinely, many items are just palette swaps or replacements with the same functionality, and there's no world building or character development.

For its time like 30 years ago it must have been really impressive, however these days I can probably give it a 7/10. I would rather play basically any other game, at all, or in this franchise even.
>>

I played the SNES zelda just before OoT and Ocarina is great. I can see how it was so influential. If anything I'm wary of playing WW.

>If anything I'm wary of playing WW.

Where to start. The game is called Wind Waker, that's the name of the music item that is used to control the sailing that you do for a large part of the game. When Nintendo remastered it, they implemented the swift sail. Not only does this cut the time spent sailing in half, it also supplants the Wind Waker of its use in sailing too. So we're looking at a flawed concept from inception, if a remaster decides to start gutting core features, and it's portrayed as a positive.

You spend a lot of time sailing, pirate themed, so collecting treasure has a big focus right? every chest you pull up is pretty much guaranteed to be rupees. This game introduced massive size wallets to hold thousands of rupees, which is a large step up from the 500 rupees in the previous games. So you're expected to collect a lot of rupees, they are a uniform treasure, you get them sailing, you get them in dungeons, in towns, all over, and they contribute to your collected funds. In the original the point of this was to use them to translate the triforce charts, the second to last progression of the game before going to the final boss. So this is pretty much Wind Waker's best use case of non-linear progression, you find progress to be made all over the game world. The remaster reduces how many rupees would be required in half, and also doubles the amount of rupees that can be carried in each tier of wallet.

I could go on and on about this game, but it's clearly a game at odds with itself, and poorly executes everything. The remaster guts features and fans of the game tend to praise it for doing so. It's clear that even among fans, nobody really likes Wind Waker. They like the facsimile of it instead. Have you ever heard anyone talk about how much they love sailing around and exploring islands? that should be a bigger aspect of the game I imagine.

It's odd that WW is considered as one of the best games ever then. Though apparently WW inspired Black Flag's sailing mechanics. Pretty cool.

Being 5 years old is an entirely different animal than being 8 years old

>WW filtering out the trannys, again.
It's a 9.5/10 game. Only bad thing is the puppet ganon fight due to how bad controller gameplay is. If it was on pc and you could aim with a mouse it would be a perfect game.

Replaying the original and Master Quest several times, I never got stuck in the water temple and never thought it was hard. One of the comfiest places in the game.
To later on read a bunch of retards on the internet saying it's hard and that they got stuck was baffling.

>>740246405
Despite coming to hate Aonuma and what he did to the series, I still very much like WW even with its flaws. The remaster is dogshit.

lol how dare you bring up railroading when you bend over backwards for Wind Waker. A game with a seamless open world, yet decides to force you along for over half the game from place to place, and any attempts to go elsewhere stops you and turns the ship around. Twilight Princess doesn't make any attempts to subvert expectations, it opens up the world location by location in conjunction with the story and your acquired equipment. We don't even need to address Skyward Sword at this rate, I could have a field day.

>>740249653
An idea I had recently for a theoretical remake was putting in a rematch with Dark Link during the castle escape sequence (with the timer still going during the battle). maybe even just putting him there period and replacing the Water Temple's miniboss with a new water/ice themed miniboss, but I'd understand if people would think that goes too far against the spirit of the original game

The old Reddit layout uses markdown formatting, necessitating two enter commands to break a line, otherwise it'd just continue on the same line. The sh and (I think, I never used it during that period) new layouts only use it in the background so a single enter command breaks a new line automatically but it's obviously a habit that's tough to shake.

Majora's Mask wasn't Aonuma's game. Wind Waker was his first own project, and it and to a lesser extent TP and ALBW are the only good games since he took over, because they stay the most true to Miyamoto's vision.

You can't get softlocked in the water temple, but you do make things harder on yourself if you open the doors in a specific order. I'm pretty sure this happens with one of the doors on the second and third levels of the temple, where if you open the third floor door before the second floor door, it leads to a lot of annoying running around. I'm sure someone who's run the water temple 8,000 times can correct me on that though.

Water Temple was my favorite and I played it at 8. The people that don't like it played it for the first time in their 20s and they were too brainrotted by video game analysis videos. i started a 3 heart no death run and accidentally did fire temple first, i took the detour to goron city through lost woods on the way to sacred forest meadow, bombed the rolling goron first try and said "fuck it lets see how far i can get without the bow" and it turns out you dont need it at all for the fire temple. such a great game for this reason alone, you can accidentally sequence break and they arguably encourage you to do so with the goron city shortcut being en route to sacred forest meadow

Sadly, I've seen grown men treat what would otherwise be simple puzzles as completely impassable brick walls. I really hate to say it, but the big glowing weak spots on bosses are necessary for bellcurvers. Saw a dude playing TP and he just couldn't look down in the forest temple to see a "Z" on the ground to solve a gale boomerang puzzle. This dude just couldn't look down... that's the average modern gamer. Yellow paint and tutorials has killed their gamer's intuition.

These guys are never simply playing a character. It's half true, because they have a sense of humor, but the other half is honest. They're hiding behind the idea that it's all an act. This is normal for all the comedians I like, such as Bill Burr. I don't think there's anything wrong with what they joke about, and they're right to criticize the idea that comedy should be censored, but they also use this as a shield to avoid any kind of analysis
I'll give an example
>celebrity dies
>some dumb fuck comes up with a joke 12 seconds after the announcement
>"dude, what the fuck"
>"nah man, I'm coping through humor"
It's a more complicated version of that. The guy making the joke clearly doesn't give a fuck
>>
>>740269537
none of that is a takeback of "actually i was wrong about what i said". its just "i did it for the wrong reasons" and "i did it in the wrong way because i was trying to be funny." at MOST its "i exaggerated the severity of the issues" but quite literally never takes back they are issues.

I did this when I was seven and I never had an issue with finding things in Ocarina. I'm legitimately baffled at how some people aren't able to analyze and decipher things like this. All the 3DS version did was add colored lines to show where the three water levels were, and then had a strategy guide back at your house and temple of time. I didn't use the latter, but it honestly wasn't that bad.
I expect a remake to oversimplify it into being one of the most straightforward dungeons ever. Just walking in a straight line from a hub room, then coming back once you get the key.
Fuck it, it's Aonuma. There'll be a waterflow that automatically takes you back to the hub room.
>>
>>740274348
>Fuck it, it's Aonuma. There'll be a waterflow that automatically takes you back to the hub room.
...I'm so focused on if they'll add new things which the 3DS game didn't do, I didn't consider that he'll casualize the boss fights and original dungeons. My excitement for an OoT remake just went down tremendously, but it shows I still have some hope for the Zelda team. Thanks for bringing me back to reality.

It's the most puzzle oriented dungeon in the game, and every other dungeon was braindead easy compared to it. Not to say it was unbearably difficult, the only truly bullshit thing about it is the key hidden under the central tower and maybe the Dark Link fight. It's just the only dungeon that requires 3D thinking and memorization with the water levels, but that's what makes it good. Though if you aren't keeping track of things, it can get annoying having to raise and lower the water levels.

This
This is the entire reason the Water Temple is hard.
You miss this key, and then you spend the next 30 minutes backtracking, changing water levels, looking, changing water levels, swapping boots, and changing water levels.
Or you find it immediately, and the rest of the dungeon is easy as piss. Maybe the one block you need to change levels on, takes like 2 minutes to figure out.
And then you git gud, and realize the Water Temple has two entire more keys than it needs if you aren't dense, and it becomes the easiest Temple that you do in like 5 minutes, literally faster than the deku tree, and never take it seriously again.
>>
>>740279391

>Forest
I think it makes a somewhat confusing first impression, but if you know how to look at your fucking map it crumbles.
>Fire
I'm gonna be honest.
I have no idea how you do the fire temple legit anymore. The temple breaks in such a fundamental way in randomizers and shit that I don't even remember anymore. You tell me.
>Water
There's the key under the tower that makes or breaks your experience here. Otherwise it's pretty easy, there's maybe two puzzles that take a second.
>Shadow
Shadow is a temple of two minds.
On the one hand, it's more or less a straight line, with some of the least complex decision making in 3D Zelda, let alone OoT. On the other, some of its puzzles require pretty oblique usage of items and the environment. Shooting the bombs, the spike wall room. Iirc there's a few silver rupees that need you to hookshot shit from specific angles, which, for the time, was pretty neat.
>Spirit
Also very very straight line ass temple. If memory serves, there's mostly a couple scenarios you can't solve, that you just come back on with the mirror shield. But, kinda like the Fire Temple, this one breaks pretty badly in randomizers and shit so my memory could be wrong.
>>
>>740280123
>I have no idea how you do the fire temple legit anymore. The temple breaks in such a fundamental way in randomizers and shit that I don't even remember anymore. You tell me.
It's very linear. Each goron gives you the key to the next room.
>>
>>740279846
>the discussion is taking the lore seriously

>>
Okay but WHAT was the Water Temple supposed to even be?

Like the Forest Temple is a haunted mansion, the fire temple is a big forge or foundry, the shadow temple is a big torture chamber and the spirit temple is an actual temple to the goddess of the desert
But the water temple? What was it supposed to be?
>>

Now what are some of the REAL overhated temples? I think Shadow Temple gets too much hate now for the linearity. I like that it doesn't have a hub world because it breaks off from all the other temples that do have hub areas and it would have felt played out after awhile. The theming with the styx boat is also cool, and it's filled with cool horror themed monsters
>>
>>740280364
Fire Temple is also supposed to be OoT's version of Spectacle Rock, something I didn't notice until fairly recently.
>>

The giant sword you can buy from the goron could bypass his guard but it broke too fast. (yes I know you can get a permanent one but it's clearly optional)

Is it even possible to casualize those? You can't get much easier than OoT's 3-round gimmick, most of which can be shortened to 2 or even 1 round if you know what you're doing.
If anything, they'd censor the absolute shit out of the Bottom of the Well/Shadow Temple and probably overwrite its lore with Fujibayashi's yamato damashii shit.
