Yakuza flopped in the West

>Yakuza blew up as memes on the internet for western audiences.
>The sales tell a different story and are tepid and worse entry after entry, Japan and Asia are indeed the majority of sales and that share seems to increase game after game (despite overall sales being lower overall)

https://www.installbaseforum.com/forums/threads/bloomberg-netease-to-stop-funding-nagoshi-studio-as-it-cuts-back-on-gaming.4452/page-2#post-406650

>sales in Japan and Asia seem to have made up a big part of this momentum, as Yokoyama notes, “The game is incredibly strong in Japan. Sales in (the rest of) Asia are also quite strong, but the momentum in Japan is even greater than in the past.”

when did yakuza go downhill? played 1 and 2 a few years ago and they were amazing, then played 0 also really good but not as soulful, kiwami felt like a bunch of reused assets slapped together, but i'm afraid 3,4,5,6 are not going to be as good, definitely not playing from 7 onwards

Yakuza 0 was one of the best Yakuza games, and also the worst thing that could happen to the whole series. Sad but true.

People always bring up how repetitive these games are or how the writing got worse after 0, but the real issue has always (since the second game) been that this is a series about criminals that isn't the least bit edgy.
Yakuza 1 was the only exception. Everything that came afterwards avoided killing off major characters and tried to turn the protagonists and especially Majima into superheroes. The tone doesn't fit at all.

It's another case of PCfags ruining a game series. It spent over a decade being just fine on PlayStation.
>>
Went from being a japanese mafia game to Marvel tier adventures with Japs.
>>
>>740247974
I wouldnt count any brawlers they've released since LJ to really be mainline, big budget games. If STH has crappy combat then it's truly over.
>>
>>740244825
>when did yakuza go downhill? played 1 and 2 a few years ago and they were amazing

It's because the series pivoted away from the tone of the first two games and became an increasingly wacky and never-ending soap opera.
>>
>>740248042
Ichiban is a lame faggot and him being a shounen character has completely destroyed the writing of the games because everything revolves around that now
>>
>>740248042
The combat in Infinite Wealth was the best part of the game. Possibly the best turn based combat in any JRPG

I'm playing infinite wealth right now and this faggot takes me out of the game every time I hear his awful voice, his delivery is so forced and contrasts so horribly against all the other fantastic voice actors in the English dub.

Whenever Kasuga or anyone else says a comment while walking around the city it feels natural and organic, then this fat fuck will say something and ends all his lines with a brooding growl to sound dark and mysterious and he just sounds like a total dork. Completely kills my immersion every time I hear him, what the fuck where they thinking casting him as Kiryu?

The entire series is infinitely more fun to think about playing then actually play. Idk how enjoys the awful beat em up system when they remove all the skills that make it bearable till you're 25 hours into a playthrough. Every game.

>series is doing fine in japan, very budget series, but never was a strong seller in the US
>yakuza 0 suddenly is a huge success because of meme culture at the right time and actually being a really good game
>suddenly sega keelturns over to start bringing the series over to the west more
>games were already having some fast turnarounds; after a filler game with the shitty kiwami 1, dragon engine starts with 6 and they hit the yearly release schedule
>judgment does fine, 7 is iffy but a breath of fresh air even if some don't care for ichiban
>then shit starts getting turbo retarded, the kiwamis get really, really fucking bad (Ishin Kiwami is an absolute fucktarded misery), and suddenly they're trying so hard to appeal to westerners that the games are getting shonky english dubs
>everything gets wacky and crazy first and the super serious plot stuff becomes even more out there and eccentric to match, despite always being kind of an "over the top" series to begin with
>start including vtuber and content creator references or DLC and other shit
>now yong yea is voicing kiryu at a teenage shouting quietly level
>start fucking up localizations in the name of english dubbing; previously had them separate of each other where you had text for the japanese dub and then separate text for fitting english dub script but it's gone now
>kiwami 3 happens, largely outsourced, missing swaths of content with dogshit to replace it, horribly fucked over in virtually every way they could've done

from the perspective of a fresh player it will seem mostly fine, if a bit occasionally strange for the sake of strange and a bit obnoxiously grindy. from the perspective of knowing what the original was like
>Trooper Cards became a game wide mechanic instead of the intentionally zany post-game super dungeon encounters
>bosses and fights got adjusted and massively stat inflated to compensate; now characters doing kamehameha beams are just an inherent part of certain fights and the general gameplay versus the original.. not doing any of that normally
>if you're a difficulty chaser, this means a number of bosses just gain one hit kill moves
>the gunman style was nerfed so it didn't overwhelm game balance, and instead just feels shitty to use now
>enemy aggression and attacks got buffed so many fights will just start with you eating a hit the moment they can move if you don't habitually hold block; certain fights become downright fucktarded and the cracked out bosses become borderline dragon ball z characters of being ready to dash and spin about you
>grinding crafting to upgrade your weapons was made more excessive so that a.) it's harder to progress in the game without more grind, and b.) they sell in-game materials for MTX money; it's not like mobile game tier egregious, it's still totally manageable, but it's scummy and just absolute garbage game padding
>recast of several major characters to get rid of Yakuza 4-5 and OC actors in favor of Yakuza 0 and 6 ones because fuck you, which actually fucks with a couple characterizations and makes certain villains supremely obvious with prior series knowledge
>unreal engine 4 so it can have some wonky dick performance issues depending on the PC rig, and they weren't entirely sure what they were doing with the engine yet so some things just look plain off
>>

Do you value convenience and modern play? Kiwami 1 and 2 still "work", though both have issues like K1's boss regen and essence of Kiwami shit, and they're both PS2 cutscenes poorly pasted onto higher quality models. You want to play the series proper, you can rock Y1 and 2 Restored to get the series development as it progresses, and I'd say "hey just ride the series to 0 or 6". You can still get the remasters on GOG, bugs with heightened enemy aggression and blocking aside or so forth. After that point, maybe you're interested in Judgment or other stuff, that's biting the bullet on what you want, yet Dragon Engine games are so schizophrenic in quality that I wouldn't fault you for stopping at 0 instead of bothering with 6. But I will say 1 and 3 are a bit shonky one way or another.

Director leaves the series for some China money it didn't work out, main writer he used to tar-wrangle on the retarded ideas takes over as studio and series director. Tard then proceeds to:
>go full silly on everything and fatigue everyone
>remake Yakuza 0 but add in extra cutscenes that actively ruin the game's narrative and ending if you don't skip and ignore them
>delist Yakuza 0 from all other consoles because the rerelease is $30 more expensive and 3 times larger in memory and you'd need to be actually fucking stupid to buy it like that
>update Kiwami 1 and 2, the former for $2 extra, but make it so you can't reuse your save file if you upgrade, also additional memory and stuff used too
>make a godawful remake of Yakuza 3 for the 20th anniversary of the series that
>>recasts characters
>>gives worse vocal performances
>>cuts the map size
>>has shit lighting and graphics
>>cuts 100 substories just about
>>makes Kiryu's gameplay somehow worse in DoD mode than Gaiden and adds a shit gimmicky weapon style too
>>changes the entire ending of the game to undo one character's death while also making him and another character seriously important to 4 and Saejima's nardative exit the story and be secret agents
>>add an extra story for a very popular series character in Mine, advertise it as a new game, make it 2 hours long tops
>then delist Yakuza 3 on every console again to make the shitmake the only available game unless you pony up a hundred-something bucks for the Steam bundle
That last one really set me off to the point I've just been completely ignoring Stranger Than Heaven. I'll buy it in a few years if it's decent and the studio can reflect, but otherwise fuck 'em, Yokoyama's a greedy fag who takes the fans for granted.

You know, for a good while I was worried about this series. Ever since the ending to Pirates and the fuckup that is K3, I think I'm satisfied with the amount of Kino RGG brought us. I'm not going to play StH, it looks very normie coded, it's so removed from the mainline series that they can expirement with english va's and snoop dogg and shit. I'm good, there's 12 great games counting Judgment that I can always look back on and play in my 40's.
>>
>>740265535
NTA but it wasn't about watching a live action show, just live action casting in general.
