Lots of tracks have branching routes or small choices, and those choices can be red herrings (boosters on the outer lane of a turn when taking the unboosted inner lane is faster, stuff like that). You can win lots of games just by knowing the best route to take without mushrooms. Second - start to understand the shortcuts and learn them, and learn when it’s optimal to hop on a rail or wall ride for extra speed. The shortcuts can be simple, complex, or anything in between. Lots of shortcuts have easier but slightly less optimal versions so find what works for you. 3. Learn item strategy relative to your position. You’re playing a different game depending on where you are. At the back of the pack you’re aiming for a shock dodge item and good timing, or a major/massive gold shroom/star/bullet bill shortcut. Midpack you want to get triple shrooms or gold shrooms and draft for position while taking important shroom cuts, and closer to first you want to get a single mushroom for an important shroom cut or you want to snatch 1st when you can defend against a blue shell. Don’t frontrun if a blue shell can knock you out of first because they are tyrannical. Also it’s faster to go out of bounds than to let a blue shell connect. Honestly watch shortcat do real races or some other sweatlord and you start to understand how they approach the game.
