Some people who weren’t even alive at the time will say, “But what about 2D -> 3D!”Here’s what. There was never any paradigm shift in regards to 3D. Polygonal games existed via arcades all throughout the late ‘80s and into the ‘90s, parallel to pixel graphics. Just because consoles at the time were too weak to handle them at home doesn’t mean people were unaware of 3D graphics and were blown away when consoles were finally able to do a weak-as-fuck version. With the 5th -> 6th gen transition, it was a different story entirely. The easily observable improvement in graphics right there at home was so monumental and astounding, it was literally jaw-dropping. We went, in a span of just a few years, from ascetic blocks roughly representing the concepts they were attempting to depict to fully realized detailed characters and backgrounds that still look good today and work on every intended level. I don't think any leap in technology from now until the end of eternity would ever replicate that experience, especially since the technology has hit a plateau. Like what can we possibly get? Sci-fi level holograms? I don't think even that would compare, and such things are no more than gimmicks anyway.
>>740249083pretty sure you've already posted this.
>>740249083It was pretty awesome to witness. For me it was seeing Tekken Tag at the movie theater I was like no way
For me it was Sonic Adventure
>>740249727That was a very good looking game at the time

>>740249083Yeah but I also remember being very disappointed that FFX had no overworld and when you get the airship it's just a fast-travel point instead of actually being able to fly around.
>>740249083There was no massive shift after that, because not only should consoles have been discarded in favor of home computers after 6th gen, but the rise of dynamic player-controlled cameras meant that graphical effects became significantly more expensive while generally looking worse, since they had to look good at all angles. In terms of technique the industry decided to tie one hand behind its back and in terms of hardware it decided to amputate a leg. It's like if consoles had decided to go full 3D with the 3rd gen consoles, so you also need to wait for hardware to catch up to scope if you want to see that same kind of progress.

I agree, but I have to say I wasn't there for the 2D era. Older gamers I have talked with actually were more impressed in the sound quality changes when moving on from 8 bit range. But the difference in PS2 titles like FF and MGS was mind blowing, haven't experienced anything like since. Graphics already being close to reality this shift won't be replicated anymore, the last thing left to do is a brain chip but that is mostly for other stuff besides graphics.
>>740251670The industry isn't ready to acknowledge that we need dedicated raytracing sound cards.
>>740252258For sure, but understandable as it is a much harder aspect to market than graphics. When a sound team hits a jackpot it is great, stuff like DiRT Rally still destroys the competition in engine sounds (RIP Codemasters).
>>740249083>With the 5th -> 6th gen transition, it was a different story entirely. Not really. It's not as if higher fidelity and more detailed 3DCG animation didn't exist before then either. Exactly the same, home hardware just wasn't powerful enough for it yet. 2D->3D was truly extraordinary. Nothing really comes close. Even if later generational shifts were still impressive.
to a kid who was diehard obsessed with MGS1 and FF7-9, i don't think there could possibly be a more mindfucking experience than getting FF10 and MGS2. ur right op.
