People make fun of Hunt Down the Freeman (and rightfully so) but it's unironically the best written and most honest Half Life game. You see what happens when you try and tell a real story in such a generic setting like the Half Life universe? It fucking sucks. It's shocking how much better Deus Ex is in the way it tells its story, whether directly (cutscenes) or indirectly (emails), because they're not FUCKING SCARED OF TELLING A FUCKING STORY. Deus Ex doesn't hide what's going on behind vague mysteries that GO NOWHERE>B-B-BUT THEY'RE DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF MY ARBITRARY GENRE TAGS!!1Not an argument. There's a four year gap between HL2 and Deus Ex, but only Deus Ex still feels modern and innovative, meanwhile the gravity gun was mogged by Psi Ops the Mindgate Conspiracy and other later games. Nothing about Deus Ex has since been replicated, not even by DE's supposed sequels.I'll replay Deus Ex to the day I die and I haven't even unlocked the achievements in HL2 when they added them to Steam because I thought it was mid then and it's probably still mid now. *Sorry about the misleading image, as I actually like HL1 but HL2 is reprehensible trash
One of my favorite parts about Deus Ex is the way the game thrusts you into the role of JC by establishing a family connection with Paul.Valve is gay and cringe and would think your character having any life outside the game "wouldn't le heckin' work with the le a24 tone we're setting"
different kinda games innit
>>740269141That's like saying an indie film can't be judged compared to Hollywood blockbusters, when there are plenty of indie films I'd rather watch compared to blockbuster slop. (Half Life 2 is a shitty indie film in this equation)
max payne > both
>>740269421Max Payne has problems with its narrative (Max's nonexistent undercover career, BB disappearing for practically the whole game and just dies when he reappears) that Max Payne 2 would later rectify, but it's definitely better written than Half Slop 2.
>>740267915can I play deus ex in VR or with pathtracing yet. I've tried going in dry but I need some extra sauce on it
>>740269141Not really.HL2 has good gameplay mechanics/puzzles (better than Deus Ex in many ways) but shitty linear level design. If valve incorporated imsim design philosophy (being able to approach puzzles in different ways, etc...) in HL2 map design it'd be very similar to Deus ex, just without RPG mechanics.
>>740271267Wouldn't solve how bad HL2's story/characters/plot are. (And if it's not outright bad, it's nonexistent)
>>740267915Half Life 2 VR > Deus Ex
After playing GMDE Augmented through a few times I went back to vanilla Deus Ex and its crazy how much GMDE enhances and adds to the level design.
>>740267915no shit
>>740271407bullshit. Deus Ex is game design basically at its most core supreme quality.Half Life 1 and 2 are a very, very close second in terms of FPS games. but Deus Ex is on an entirely different intellectual level of design.
>>740272608That's the thing, you'd think so, but HL2fags like to silo Deus Ex as its own thing, as if to protect HL2's feelings.
>>740267915>but it's unironically the best written and most honest Half Life gameHal-life 1 isn't remembered for having a great story, it's a boomer shooter with really good level design and that's what people like it for, this comparison is incredibly retarded and if you haven't killed yourself yet out of sheer embarrassment after realizing what you posted, now would be as good of a time as ever
>>740272798>Hal-life 1 isn't remembered for having a great story,You didn't read the OP. I know reading is hard for you Half Life 2 fags because you need your reading glasses for those emails in Deus Ex.
>>740272793Deus Ex is the golden standard of all games ever made and gaming in general and anyone saying otherwise is unfortunately an Untermensch
>>740267915sure but the gameplay is absolute ass
I am really losing my temper with you kids. I played those games on release and they are completely different genres. Deus Ex was my fav game back than but it aged like cheese in anything but the narrative while hl1 & 2 are still fine, even great when played in vr.
>>740272928>Love me gimmicks like I'm at a carnival funfair
>>740272843My bad
>>740267915>but it's unironically the best written and most honest Half Life game.YOU FUCKED UP MY FACE
>>740272928Hl2 aged like a crowbar in water, that game was all about impressive mechanics for its time. Deus Ex has a great story and thinking man's gameplay (timeless). Hl1 has great level design in an extensive single player campaign (timeless).
>>740267915>it's unironically the best written and most honest Half Life gamestopped reading right there
>>740273748It is though. Hunt Down the Shitman isn't trying to obfuscate the plot behind mysteries that'll never be resolved because there will never be a Half Life 3 you fucking loser. It's very upfront about its intentions, as edgy/cringe as they appear and it uses Half Life 2's terrible setting to tell it. Guess what? HL2's setting sucks and it's a wonder they managed to tell any kind of story with it.
>>740269236Deus ex is an immersive sim half life is an FPS mixed with adventure game mechanics you cant really compare them.
