Reminder that if you
>used any trinkets except the magnet and steady soles
>used any sidearms for combat
>used any weapon except the whip
>didn't enable increased damage, fewer i-frames, slower bone up, and fewer underlabs modifiers
You didn't beat the game

Wish they include an option to CRT TV the graphics. NES games when played on modern monitors look like shit because there's nothing to blur the pixels like on old tv's so I don't know why they think it's a good idea to copy that style.

i had zero knowledge of this game. i think i saw the trailer at Summe Games fest or something and said "damn that looks gay as fuck"

then i saw the takes from people and decided to buy for Switch 2.

right now its a strong contender for game of the year. very strong. i dont want to overstate it because i like Pragmata, FH7, RE, and Yoshis Mysterious Book. but i think right now this is it.

for me its between this and Mysterious Book

I feel like this game hits all the right spots for me, but I can't in good faith say it's a good game (yet). Playing it, it's like eating your favorite dish, except once in a while you take a bite that tastes like shit. I am not talking about the game's difficulty, but in overall design choices that make little sense that they were not immediately addressed in development stage. Which leads me to believe the devs are deliberately sabotaging their own game, just to create this idea that it somehow makes it "harder".

This game has the problem where you can just run past 99% of encounters so the difficulty is optional. Same with souls shit

If you do that, you won't have enough currency to level up or buy anything lol

Unless you've levelled up def a bunch you'll die trying to do this. Especially if you're wearing the uranium trinket.
It's much more difficult to run past enemies in this game than in dark souls.

I think half of it is them changing directors near the crunch time for development when they had to fix a 6 year old game that still wasn't working, and the other half was deliberately making flaws to be "fixed" with trinkets which is a cardinal sin in game design as far as I'm concerned.
>>
>>740274005
Shovel Knight had the same design philosophy if I remember; you can complete the game with just the knight's default skillset.

>>
Do you prefer the Shovel Knight campaigns or Mina?
>>
>>740274073
There's a stark difference in pacing from Shovel Knight to Mina, a platformer versus an action RPG with volatile currency. But there's no reason options like "Hold down A instead of mashing to resubmerge without delay" should be tied to a trinket, for example. That would have made the game feel much smoother if you could tap or hold depending on what you wanted.

In short, sure, you COULD do a level 1 souls run, but it would be a miserable experience. Especially compared to a platformer.
>>
>>740274249
KoC is a hard act to beat and I'm generally more of a platformer guy but I think Mina just barely takes it, even if there are a few things I think SKTT does better

But in those games, the upgrade is permanent and leads access to newer areas, which is the real reward.
In Mina you are limited to what trinkets to use at once, a capacity which you also have to slowly upgrade, and every area is meant to be accessible from the start, so they can't lock progress behind movement options.
It's a mishmash of ideas that cause friction in practice, and once you get enough money to buy the upgrades you need the game becomes a cakewalk about 1/3rd into the experience.

I'm surprised by how fun this game is. Usually, games like this struggle to hold my attention for long, especially if I run into a dead end and get bored. Shantae is a good example. I like the character, but only two Shantae games (Risky's Revenge and Pirate's Curse) were solid enough for me to see through. But I keep coming back to this one because it's simply fun as fuck. I'd say it's superior to Silksong in gameplay - Silksong had a huge problem of never really making you feel powerful, each upgrade was incremental to the point of frustration. Beat a tough boss, get jack shit for it, move to the next boss. But here, despite not being as focused on progression, new trinkets and tools always bring something new to the table, and you feel like you're getting somewhere, unraveling the world.
It's a really damn good game, and Mina is very cute.
>>
>>740275029

>>
>>740277536
Surprisingly, no, they don't. But most of them are easy to find if you just check most walls and corners.
>>
>>740275779
There's just a lopsided difficulty spike where the start of the game is the hardest part, but once you get rolling with upgrades everything else is super manegable. Which is fine for a linear game that can ramp up to your abilities, Mina is designed open ended so all areas have to be beatable with a default layout, so once you beat one or two areas, the rest of them pose less of a threat by nature of your power spike, and you keep snowballing from there without much pushback besides optional areas like the zombie boss you cited. You need to have access to certain trinkets, subweapons, and enough vial upgrades to even attempt that boss, which means some level of exploration is required to enter.
>>

>>740275805
I don't really agree with your take on Mina. It's kind of strange for her to be such a good fighter, but besides that I wouldn't call her a mary sue. I mean basically every problem in the game is a result of her actions. Sure she's smart, but the creation of the generators fucked up everything in the first place and then she fucked everything up even more while trying to fix it. And while some of Lionel's accusations were bullshit a good chunk of them are legit depending on how you played. And whether you want to chalk it up to stubborness or stupidity, she took way too long to realize what Lionel was up to. Her competence is more of a curse for her than a blessing.

To be fair, I can't really think of any games that actually do add meaningful content to "NG+" type things. It's always just playing through the game but you're super overpowered right from the start. Like a victory lap after beating the game.
>>
>>740272061
it's not bad. the writing is pretty unexciting though, it's not even really trying to do much at all. I like the movement and the combat, hollowing is a good mechanic. It's just fine as a game, not spectacular, but competent. I'm not sure it should have taken so long to make honestly.

The Carving Man felt like a massive whiff. He’s not any bigger or scarier than any of the prior bosses you face and when he catches you all he does is throw you. Felt more annoying than anything running away from him.

i think it would've been fine if you just got a different ending for either 100% or NG+
>>
>almost done with New Game+
>no new dialogue or cutscenes
>no new enemies or bosses
>no changes to enemy placement
>no revised boss attack patterns or new attacks
>no new items or trinkets exclusive to a harder difficulty
>no new anything

What's the point, man. Yeah stuff does more damage but the level cap increases to 15, I've beaten every boss on my first try. I restored all the generators after four hours so it's going a lot faster, at least, but still. I was kind of hoping there'd be SOMETHING different, anything.

Probably just were not able to scale up the difficulty of the movement trinket challenges in a way that felt good.

Like the wallower's gloves are really straight forward for their one mandatory section.
But do you think an actually 'hard' wallower sequence would be much fun?

I'm going to bet they have dozens of challenge room layouts that just got scrapped because it wasn't good challenge.

I've been playing on a crt but anything you can straight pump 720p/1080p etc into isn't going to give you your beloved scanlines without extra work
The photo's in focus, the tube is just too low TVL to resolve a 720p signal properly because BVMs are clearly the peak of CRT technology (beaten by literally all consumer monitors past the year 2000 in specs)
You're better off with a good oled if you can, and since they're all 4k you can have your cake and eat it too with fake scanlines. I'm only doing it because it means I can have a good image while playing the game in bed but that's an extremely unique and stupid usecase.
Your options are 1. Have a good CRT monitor, have the game on PC, have a good way of getting a latency free analog signal from it and on top of that are alright with letterboxing, 2. Have an HD CRT TV and are happy with no scanlines and input lag, or 3. Deal with a fuckton of nonsense to downscale the image to 480i/240p so you can play it on a more standard CRT TV, again still with letterboxing, and for all this work you could have plugged it into the 4k oled you probably have and/or could have afforded for the average price of an HD CRT even though they're worthless in reality and have an equal if not better experience
>>

That room with the giant swinging hammer and the enemy that guards it against subweapons cemented the fact that every room in this game wasn't designed with the intent to be fun or engaging to traverse but annoyingly frustrating and slow. I've booted the game up three times and played it for quite a bit but I swear my urge to boot it up again gets cut in half after every session due to just annoying game design like this.
>>
>>740298947
>such a decent platform.
I can't believe we are doing pre-buyout Twitter nostalgia. Twitter always sucked donkey dick. Well, maybe not always, but definitely for years before Musk acquired it. And it was always a terrible art repository. Scrolling through through a line of images 1 by 1 pisses me off. In this regard, Twitter actually became better since the media tab now shows a bunch of images and videos in a grid. It's not perfect since there are no titles and it not obvious what's an individual image and what's a set, but it's better than wearing down my scroll wheel. And I also don't like it when artists use their account both as a gallery and to talk about random shit I don't care about.

So
Thorne: Spark is too dangerous. It needs to be stopped NOW, even if the fallout won't be without consequences, we need to minimize the harm as much as possible.
Mina: The fallout from destroying the spark towers is too dangerous and will cause too much harm. If we are to move away from spark, it must be done properly.
Lionel: The consequences be damned, we can't stand in the way of progress! The harms of spark might be real, but we can learn to manage it, and who cares if people are trampled upon along the way.

Is there a jumpscare with the mirror? I'm really afraid to go into first person view with her after the bullshit darkness thing. I actually haven't played the game since the darkness one / enemy on the back.
>>
>>740305909
>Is the NPC entering the mirror actually easily missed?
There's no real reason to go into the manor for the rest of the game unless you're fighting the lion guard for the nightstar upgrade. Besides the newspapers outright tell you even if you do miss it.
>>
what happens if you pay the bone thief 1000 to get his body back?
>>
>>740305909
But Mina doesn't say
>"Huh, was it my imagination? I thoguht I saw someone walk through the mirror. I wonder if I can do that... maybe if I walk into the mirror for 3 seconds with the directional pad, something might happen. Should I give that a try?"
so it wasn't very obvious.

Gives you the Bell of Grace which reduces the bone penalty on sparkless death by half.
>>
>>740293465
You're already going the right way. The crypts are the easiest area. But I had to go through a harder area to get there.
>>
>>740306028
The camera also needs to pan to the mirror and Mina won't leave the room until you do it.
>>
>>740293513

It's a bizarre holdover from older classic Castlevania that doesn't really fit in a game like this

What are the dark green lines that go to Caldera?
>>
>>740294139
Here's an idea. You can go get a sub weapon first before fighting him.
Just because you died there doesn't mean you need to beeline straight back to him.

Also if you level up you get your spark back too.
>>
>>740294551
Silksong is like. At least 5x if not 10x harder than this cute little game.
I can't imagine how your first two or three hours in bloodborne went if this is too hard for you.
>>
>>740294919
Yeah games should just reset you right before the jump if you miss it.
You would like vvvvvv very much. It never puts you back more than one screen, there's checkpoints every 10 steps.

Maybe you'd like to try Mina with emulator save states? That should do it for you. Pirate the switch version and use save states there.

I started Lego Batman and Mina around the same time and it's ridiculous how much more fun I am getting out of the latter. I'm booting up a game for interactivity and dopamine, not a 3 hour prologue with endless cutscenes and learning how to jump. Oldschool gameplay just tosses you in there and at least to some point challenges you (not that I would defend video games as a super high art).
>>
>>740306229
yeah I feel like a retard now that I understand how easy it is to beat those knights
>>
>>740305973
>There's no real reason to go into the manor for the rest of the game
It has the underlab.
And right beneath the entrance is the axe. If you get the axe you might as well use the underlab above it.
Also. If you ever try to cross the chasm next to Elizabeth, that underlab is likely where you'd respec for the jump.
Likewise whenever you'd try to beat your jump record for the possum outside of the entrance.

Or if you'd want to chat with Lionel after having restored a new spark tower.
I entered his office every chapter of the game.

Just found out that apparently YC said they're not gonna do any DLC stuff for Mina?

Seems like a waste given how much they did for Shovel Knight.
They even left some big openings to do stuff. The newspaper and credits both mention some untamed wild west area. Thorne's island base is also mentioned in the paper and seen briefly in the post-credits. And there's a whole thing mentioning Goddred as the previous owner of the manor and his daughter Evra being the strongest optional boss feels like it was meant to tease something more could be planned there.
>>
>>740306750
I'm still torn on whether to get Lego Batman because on one hand I'm starving for more BamHam but on the other I really really do not care for the Batman movies which the game seems to be all about.
>>
>>740306872
to be fair the game has a shit ton of content already, just as much as the entire treasure trove.

speaking of which when the FUCK are we getting silksong dlc
>>
Feel like a barely scratched the surface of this game yet. How can I finish the 2nd generator and only have 7% trophies ? Sussy hollower...
>>
>>740285068
>actually likes achievements that are just "beat level one beat level two etc"
Achievements should encourage you to do things you wouldn't normally do while 100%ing the game.
>>
>>740306872
Mina was always a side project turned studio saver in desperation, YCG never wanted Mina to be anything more than a side note in their portfolio, and so far she's not selling billions like Shovel Knight did to force them into making more due to the money it'd bring.
>>
>>740306872
Them spending over a decade just making FREE dlc for shovel knight was the entire reason why Mina became all or nothing. It doesn't make any sense at all from a business perspective to keep supporting a game like that.
>>
>>740306872
It just means they aren't committed to it like Shovel knight,
>>

The Caldera mage guild can (eventually) teleport you to the dunmer temples the green lines connect to.
And you can use a special item to teleport back to the Caldera mage guild.

I am bad at games. If bad = taking my time + being about average skill level.
>>
It's gonna take me forever to try all of these run modifiers but if nothing else at least the game seems extremely replayable.

>>740306872
They at least said they'd like to do a sequel, so hopefully some of that will be explored then. I get why they're not doing a DLC plan like Shovel Knight's though, as other anons said they spent almost a decade making basically three and a half new games that they gave out to anyone who bought the game in the first few years (most of the playerbase) without seeing a dime from it. It bought a fuckload of goodwill from me but it's not exactly a sound business strategy.

According to the newest newspaper stats I have;
Time - 24:07:12
Deaths - 56
Bones found - 29378
Bones lost - 9227
Heals - 170
Jumps - 12763
Conversations - 352
That last number is kinda baffling. I am a yapper apparantly.

Final stats on the save were
Time: 20:06:46
Death: 81
Bones found: 170421
bones lost: 1856
jumps: 37766
conversations: 856

I don't see a heals stat in the newspaper.
